I find it so sad that they both felt the need to do this to their faces, because the perception now is that women aren’t able to age?
It’s not just about age. Both women have been subject to comments about their looks for decades. Kelly in particular has had comments about her weight, her looks and even that her looks signal how much intelligence she has. She has lived with these comments throughout all her formative years. Every time she has lost weight, people have commented and said her face is too angular, she’s gone too far, she’s anorexic. Then when she inevitably puts on weight, she’s fat, she’s lazy, she’s ugly. She has never managed to find the right weight that mean she can escape judgement. The right weight to mean she might be considered beautiful. She has never been able to be at peace with how she looks. She has never been allowed that privilege.
Maybe it’s WLI drugs. Maybe it’s plastic surgery. Maybe it’s grief. Maybe all three. Does it matter? I find it utterly heartbreaking that even now, people still need to make comments. Obviously, this isn’t ideal for young girls and women but there are better ways for us to be telling young girls and women that they don’t need to be holding themselves to unrealistic beauty standards than calling someone who has never been allowed to just be themselves, grotesque.
How do they think that this looks good?
Well, if it is grief, grief rarely looks good on anyone. If it is WLI and cosmetic surgery, how can you have any idea of what looks good when every look you’ve tried has always been criticised?
