Has anyone ever actually been bullied for having a chavvy name?

Manfredine · 01/03/2026 13:36

Nothing outlandish or double barreled but a name that nonetheless comes up in all the chav name lists. A lot is made online about names being chavvy but has having such a name ever actually affected anyone irl?

example being Chantelle not princess-Rosie-Leigh

AIBU to think it’s more about the parents and worrying about how they’ll be perceived for choosing a certain name?

Nominative determinism is a real thing.
Steer away from anything potentially dodgy; imagine if the child was to become a barrister, would the name fit in with the profession?

I hope that was a tongue in cheek response.

Destiny was the best Angel in Captain Scarlet. Very young me would have loved to have been named Destiny.

Barristers go by their last names

@Manfredine what is a chavvy name? I was bullied for having a posh name. Kids are kids.

So was I! And that’s what I’m asking I’ve never heard of anyone being bullied for having a chavvy but normal name. I mean stuff that’s on the “chav name lists” but is normal like Chantelle. I’m not talking about spelt incorrectly or stupid names

I think that growing up in a council house as you did and being called something like Araminta, would be extremely tough.

Growing up being called Destiny in a big McMansion is fine. Being called Destiny in a country pile and going to Roedean, probably also fine tbh. I went to university with literal aristocracy and some of their friends had truly ridiculous names, especially the American ones.

The only thing I imagine it could potentially be a disadvantage would be living in a run of the mill neighbourhood but with aspirations. Then, potentially, she could run into the odd bit of snobbery, but also potentially not.

I didn’t grow up in a council estate just a council house in a run of the mill small town. Americans are probably twenty years ahead of us for naming trends I’ve also heard some truly mind blowing American names lol

I said council HOUSE. Which is because that is where you said you grew up?

Agree re some American names. They are pretty out there

I know I thought you were getting the wrong end of the stick and thinking I grew up somewhere poor and that’s why I was teased for my name. It was just a normal town though

But I do take your point about council houses being in a run of the mill neighbourhood. There is a big new estate not far from me with a section of LA housing and then shared ownership too.

I think even in that estate, which is mainly private ownership, you might get the odd eye roll for Araminta unfortunately. Inverse snobbery is much more overt and I am sure is just as painful for a child being made fun of for their name, which is something they clearly had no say over

Jackiepumpkinhead · 03/03/2026 08:32

Destiny is an awful name.

Define ‘chav’ then. I mean, I’ve already provided the dictionary definition which it seems you disagree with, so what’s yours?

I provided the link to the Wiki page.

You're saying working class = chav. I'm saying that they aren't synonymous.
Example:
Former soap star dons Burberry style dress 15 years after THAT infamous photo - The Mirror

You keep saying 'chavvy but normal name' -- what exactly do you mean by this? What would a 'chavvy but not normal name' be, pray?

I know what the name she wants to use is (which apparently falls into her 'chavvy-but-normal' category, along with Danielle and Chantelle).

I'm asking what a 'chavvy-but-not-normal' name is, in her eyes? La-a? Chardonnay-Leigh? Jaxxon-Brayden?

Probably something like Maci-Lea.

Nicole - chavvy. Sarah, Emily and Emma not chavvy.

(I only know one Nicole so am basing it on her)

ClaudiaWinklemansFakeTan · 03/03/2026 13:47

Emma, Emily and Sarah aren't "chavvy" to me at all. Nicole...maybe 😬, but not obviously so.

I know an incredibly posh Emily and an almost as posh Emma

All the Emma’s and Emily’s I know are quite posh tbh and all the Sarah’s I know are at least 50 years old

I think of those three names as fairly neutral tbh? Not posh but not chavvy either. A bit like James, John, Catherine etc

ClaudiaWinklemansFakeTan · 03/03/2026 13:55

Also, re the word chav... I don't think of it as a terrible slur tbh. Possibly because I grew up in Ireland and we had different words! None of them are as bad as a racial slur at all though and I also don't think it is as straightforward as just meaning low income. I know a few people with a lot of money and gigantic houses etc who you could call "chavvy" and some very posh people who are broke.

NamingNoNames · 03/03/2026 13:58

It was just a list that the search on 'chav names uk' returned.

'chavvy names uk' returned I'm a school secretary and these are the 'chavviest' names feared by teachers & why Tyler screams common
