Has anyone ever actually been bullied for having a chavvy name?

Manfredine · 01/03/2026 13:36

Nothing outlandish or double barreled but a name that nonetheless comes up in all the chav name lists. A lot is made online about names being chavvy but has having such a name ever actually affected anyone irl?

example being Chantelle not princess-Rosie-Leigh

AIBU to think it’s more about the parents and worrying about how they’ll be perceived for choosing a certain name?

Yawn.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 02/03/2026 20:57

Manfredine · 02/03/2026 20:54

Alright am I allowed to say it because my mum lives in one and I used to live there too?

No. You really are disgusting. No one should be using this word to describe a section of society,

Fivelegged · 02/03/2026 20:59

Manfredine · 02/03/2026 20:48

You’re being very uptight nobody gets called a chav just for living in a council house loads of people live in them including my own mother and my younger siblings and I grew up in it too.

I thought you were middle class, OP?

Manfredine · 02/03/2026 21:00

EmeraldShamrock000 · 02/03/2026 20:55

You are an uptight and ignorant.

Using the term "chav" is generally considered inappropriate and offensive in the UK, as it is a pejorative, classist slur used to stereotype, mock, and demean working-class youth
. It is often described as a form of "social racism" or snobbery, carrying connotations of anti-social behavior and low intelligence.

  • Context: It is a negative slang term targeting specific fashion choices and behavior, usually associated with young, underclass, white people.
  • Perception: Many view it as a form of prejudice against the working class.

It is widely advised to avoid using this term due to its derogatory nature.

are you an ai bot? How am I the uptight one when you’re getting your panties in a twist over the word chav and saying it’s like saying the n word?

Loads of middle class people live in council houses? No they don’t.

They certainly do. Loads of middle-class people, however, do not.

Are you a social climber? New money? That explains the snobbery.

No lol tell me what I said wrong? I see someone’s gone and made a thread about my thread. I haven’t called anyone a chav. I asked if anyone had had a bad experience with having a name that’s been described as chavvy. Because I’m pregnant and trying to choose a name for my child. Does it really need to be explained 50 times what have I said that’s snobby? Other than the word not directed at anyone

@Catterbat , what are you on about?

Working class and chav are not the same.

Calling me ridiculous when it's you banging on about class.
Chavs don't have any class.

Define ‘chav’ then. I mean, I’ve already provided the dictionary definition which it seems you disagree with, so what’s yours?

Catterbat · 02/03/2026 21:45

Manfredine · 02/03/2026 21:00

Catterbat · 02/03/2026 21:45

Trolltastic 🙄

I don’t think I know anyone who thinks saying chav is a big deal let alone as bad as the n word.
That’s aside from the fact I haven’t directed it at anyone. Context is everything

Nobody is suggesting that all peope with names some regard as 'chavvy' are prevented from achieving great things. It's just... why put a minor possible obstacle in your child's way when it can be so easily avoided?

Yeah this. A few will always bust the stereotype. Doesn’t mean there isn’t still a stereotype associated with the chavvy name though.

Destiny is on the edge of chavvy I’d say. I wouldn’t personally use it.

TheRuffleandthePearl · 02/03/2026 22:22

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 02/03/2026 09:17

There’s a whole chapter in the book Freakonomics about bias against names. There’s statistical evidence for it. American based though.

Oh yes I’d forgotten about that. Such an interesting book. Must reread.

TheRuffleandthePearl · 02/03/2026 22:26

NamingNoNames · 02/03/2026 11:31

My name is upper class not middle class,
I can't think of any 'upper class' names.

@Manfredine , Destiny seems to be the opposite of upper class but also dated.

@OSTMusTisNT , the 'nise' in Denise isn't the same as 'niece'.

In my accent, they do sound the same

Fivelegged · 02/03/2026 22:52

Manfredine · 02/03/2026 21:10

I know plenty it’s not mutually exclusive

Then your misunderstanding of social class is very extensive.

NewGirlInTown · 02/03/2026 23:07

Nominative determinism is a real thing.
Steer away from anything potentially dodgy; imagine if the child was to become a barrister, would the name fit in with the profession?

mrlistersgelfbride · 02/03/2026 23:14

No, I was bullied for having a posh name but I’m from quite a rough area.

Isit2026yet · 02/03/2026 23:44

@Manfredine what is a chavvy name? I was bullied for having a posh name. Kids are kids.

mathanxiety · 03/03/2026 00:16

I agree it's about the self perception of the parents.

You're more likely to find parents who are insecure and a bit up themselves here than out in real life, imo, so opinions on acceptability of names here should be taken with a big dollop of salt.
