To think ChatGPT is the best thing ever?

ColliLass · 01/03/2026 09:06

So far it has:

sorted a problem with my emails that I would never EVER have been able to work out
Found a book I haven’t been able to remember for years
diagnosed a problem on the car and accurately estimated the probable cost
found recipes

and many many more little helpful day to day offerings when i can’t remember things or I wonder things.

I loathe the AI videos and pictures that seem to be everywhere but ChatGPT is amazing.

It hallucinates a lot. And it told me I should go to the hospital because I got my period?!

I’m an employment lawyer and I now see more AI generated correspondence than human written. And it’s so frequently wrong!

I’ve also noticed an increase in people “needing” a copy of any questions that their employer wants to ask them before any meeting… so they can chat GPT their responses… it’s honestly ridiculous.

I had a client recently who needed to sack someone in probation as they were absolutely useless at the job - I ran her written post interview assessment through an AI checker and it was 100% AI generated…

and it drives me batty when clients run my advice/documents through chat gpt and email me to tell me I’m wrong because the robot says so. Meaning I then have to spend time that I usually don’t have explaining exactly why their AI assessment is incorrect. It’s so tedious!

I trust that they get billed for it

No, it’s not the best thing ever. It’s just a glorified Google for the terminally stupid.

It’s also used to create even more spam posts on here than ever before.

This. It’s horrifically bad for the environment. It just encourages people to be lazy and become massively more illiterate and deskilled.

Beamur · 01/03/2026 10:08

I think calling it artificialintelligence is misleading. It's not intelligent. It's a language tool based on data scalping.
It predicts the most likely next word, or sentence. Fine for some things but not all by a long measure. Plus as people have said, it doesn't understand usually when it's wrong or out of context.
We're seeing more written submissions where I work that have been written with this tool and they're invariably wrong. Really not good for writing legal stuff with - sounds plausible, but truly, it's slop.
They're energy hungry data centres and I think we will see widespread environmental damage coming out of this.

Lovesplasticstraws · 01/03/2026 10:08

Co-pilot is being pushed at work. I tried it on a simple spreadsheet - 5 columns, 15 years' worth of monthly prices. Started with general questions on trends and the specifics. It was wrong frequently and confidently. Couldn't even say which month had highest price let alone percentage change. "Hallucination" my arse.

Also tried it on a personal statement for a job application. This I thought it might do better as was only asking it to condense longer application into 500 words with reference to the person spec. It totally made up my achievements. Said I had extensive experience in the organisation's bespoke software when I couldn't possibly having not worked for them.

It was quite funny when I asked it to generate something for a leaving card for a colleague that I wasn't sad to see go, in the style of a 30 something northerner. Of course I didn't use it.

reversegear · 01/03/2026 10:11

I’ve used it daily for the last year for work, business, personal stuff. Holidays, trips sorting out questions. I run my email though it just to spell check and refine, and it’s saved me so much time.

Anotherrainydaynosurprise · 01/03/2026 10:12

It showed me what I would look like with a different hairstyle which was great as I didn't like it so I won't get it done. Way better than when I've gone to the hairdresser and done something I regret!

Doranottheexplorer · 01/03/2026 10:12

I find it baffling that we have parents going "kids shouldn't have phones or social media, it's hurting them" yet at the same time are using a tool that's incorrect, scraping your data, stealing content, damaging the environment, is deliberately providing misinformation, will create unemployment, causes harm to women and children (grok's ai picture generator for example) and generally making people stupider. But yeah, go on ask chatgpt how to make a tomato sauce for pasta.

simpledeer · 01/03/2026 10:12

ScarlettSarah · 01/03/2026 09:20

Hahaha... no. I work in employment law and it seems to tell everyone they have a valid claim for constructive dismissal. They almost never do. It's become a bit of an in-joke amongst my colleagues.

Yes, judges have taken to warning unrepresented parties not to use it, but they still do. One recently lost their claim as a result.

Correct me if I’m wrong but every time I google anything now, an ai response comes up first, very similar to chat gpt. So even if I didn’t want to use AI for environmental reasons, I’m doing so unwittingly making the avoidance of chat gpt irrelevant. Even companies I’m calling have AI receptionists. How can you be AI free when it’s everywhere.

That's easy. Just put a swear word in the middle of your search string and AI won't answer you. You will get an actual Google answer.

Itsmetheflamingo · 01/03/2026 10:14

Naws · 01/03/2026 09:57

Mumsnet could've helped with the things you've listed in your OP.

But you’d risk the judgemental and unkind comments which chat gpt wouldn’t give

Clearinguptheclutter · 01/03/2026 10:15

not chap gpt but I use AI a lot for work. Not by choice, we’ve been told we have to

it’s useful but all the AI tools are horrendously bad for the environment- it takes enormous amounts of power to run.

so yabu for thinking it’s the best thing ever

glitterpaperchain · 01/03/2026 10:17

ColliLass · 01/03/2026 09:46

Oh I know it isn’t infallible. I had to tell it off quite firmly because it kept guessing at a book plot. I told it it was wrong, it apologised, guessed again, apologised again, guessed again and in the end I told it in no uncertain terms to STOP guessing and if it wasn’t sure of something to just say so.

But I tell you what it isn’t. It isn’t ever rude. Unlike those sniffy, nasty posters who are quite happy to call people thick when they know NOTHING about the poster they’re insulting.

Yeah this is sad. I've seen people talk about talking to chatGPT like a friend because they're lonely or just can't manage real human interaction. People asking for advice in forums from real humans and someone commenting 'I asked chatGPT for you' as if a robot is a good replacement for human connection.

But if you want to talk to a robot who is trained to always be polite and cannot think or use logic, sure I guess that's better than real people being brutally honest. I don't use chatGPT as I prefer to use my brain to research reliable information

And ripe for propaganda!

Zanatdy · 01/03/2026 10:17

I love it. Helps me with my daughters health issue and getting the right treatment, currently giving me advice on how i’ll decorate and style my new build. Even my mother who is 72 is using it!

Sunshine99999 · 01/03/2026 10:18

I love it and use it a lot but you really need to be careful believing what it tells you. For example, my workplace is going through a major restructure and ChatGPT is telling everyone their jobs match to new jobs so they have a case for slotting in. I asked it to assume the role of HR and it gave conflicting advice, that no one could slot in (it then gave reasons why).

As long as you have sufficient critical thinking skills to question what it outputs then it can be a great time saver. I refer to it as super-Google but it does much more than that.

UnhappyHobbit · 01/03/2026 10:19

WaryHiker · 01/03/2026 10:13

Ok. That seems like a long term solution. Talk about fighting a losing battle.

TheFilliesWillRiseAgain · 01/03/2026 10:20

I don't think ChatGPT is the best AI bot anymore.

Grok and Google Gemini have both done things for me that ChatGPT failed to do (and I could never have done on my own)

I've managed to block that AI summary on Google.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 01/03/2026 10:20

I haven’t started to use it yet. I was conscious of the impact it has on the environment and thought I’d leave it to those who need to use it for work etc.

I now see that’s not the case as people are overusing it to replace human connections, as partners and psychologists, if it had the capability to wipe someone’s arse I’ve no doubt they use it to do so. It’s worrying too, the tech AI race on it. I don’t think humans have the ability to compete or comprehend what the future brings us with AI and robotics.

Itsmetheflamingo · 01/03/2026 10:21

sanityisamyth · 01/03/2026 10:08

This. It’s horrifically bad for the environment. It just encourages people to be lazy and become massively more illiterate and deskilled.

I can see it doing the opposite- pushing people back to long form writing and books, human intelligence- as what’s the point fannying around on the internet all day now? Suspect in 10 years social media will be pretty pointless, and humans want to do something.
There is increasing acknowledgement even online that scrolling has fucked us up and getting ahead in life if all about human experiences

namechangeabc123 · 01/03/2026 10:21

I’ve found it to be very useful. It’s helped me a lot with several complicated health problems that I had - far more than any doctor has ever helped me. It’s made research for my work a lot quicker and easier. It’s helped me to find a few books and films from my childhood that I’d forgotten the names of and googled many times over the years. I am also one of those “sad” people who had used it for counselling. I have a therapist anyway, but when I was bereaved and at my lowest point, chatgpt helped me a lot.

JayJayj · 01/03/2026 10:22

I regularly use it as a therapist. It’s been very helpful.

Nanda66 · 01/03/2026 10:22

I’ve used it very successfully to help me with an anxiety issue. It’s helped me move forward in a way that nothing else has.

ClassicalQueen · 01/03/2026 10:23

AI is great for many things but it does very confidently lie to you or give you misinformation. It also lacks specific subject knowledge. However it is great for brainstorming and talking me through basic concepts and processes.
