Men just causing wars

Is there a war they didn’t cause?

OP posts:
Work9to5 · 28/02/2026 19:38

The Falklands war....

Sparklespecs · 28/02/2026 19:41

Golda Meir in 1973.

Indira Ghandi in 1971.

Elizabeth I was actively involved in military campaigns and imperial expansion.

Not a war as such, but Mary I executed (horribly) a large number of Protestants.

Margaret Thatcher in 1982.

It would be so much better if we just put the leaders, who want to go to war, into an arena and they fight each other to death.

I guess they would think twice about it then, what with Trumps bone spurs and all…

Argentina invaded the Falklands Islands. Margaret Thatcher had a choice to go to war over it or take some other path. She went to war over it.

I’m not suggesting that was the wrong choice, it wasn’t, but it’s an example of a female leader going to war.

Give me a history lesson then.

In the words of certain leaders:

Men just causing wars
TheFilliesWillRiseAgain · 28/02/2026 19:52

As well as Thatcher, I'm guessing you've never heard of:

Boudica

Queen Zenobia of Palmyra

Queen Isabella I of Castile

Catherine the Great of Russia

Queen Teuta

Golda Meir did not start the Yom Kippur War!

GaIadriel · 28/02/2026 19:54

I thought female rulers were more likely to start wars?

There was a study where they looked at about 400 years of European history and queens were something like 30-40% more likely to start a war than kings. Probs helped that they weren't expected to lead the army into battle like many kings did!

AWedgeOfLemonAndASmartAnswerForEverything · 28/02/2026 19:55

Isolated examples of female leaders doesn't really cut it as proof that women cause wars. As a percentage of all the wars ever, it's a rounding error, and they were still operating within a patriarchal system. There has never been a truly matriarchal civilisation, so there's not even a proper basis for comparison. Which probably tells us all we need to know.

Spiffingdarling88 · 28/02/2026 19:56

You obviously haven't worked in a female dominated industry 😂

BlueJuniper94 · 28/02/2026 19:58

I wonder how we can know. With my experience of women and their behaviour at times I find it very hard to believe that war wouldn't exist if women were leaders. And unfortunately, we do rely on men to protect us from other aggressive males. The world is a violent place, a war of all against all, and we have the luxury of feeling as powerful as we do because of male power.

400 years of historical data is.....an isolated example? 🤔

Women squabble much more than men. However, they don't usually have the power/authority to start wars. But when they do have the power they do start the wars.

Goodadvice1980 · 28/02/2026 20:17

I defer to the comedian Chris Rock ….

If women ruled the world there’d just be a whole bunch of countries not talking to each other.

You know what? That's actually a good idea.

Heyhelga · 28/02/2026 20:20

Politics and religion is ultimately what causes the majority of wars.

Politics and religion is ultimately what causes the majority of wars.

And oil.

But they are mainly caused by men.

I remember seeing something about Heorge Bush starting wars. ‘Give him a couple of toddlers to cope with’ was the suggested solution!

Sparklespecs · 28/02/2026 20:23

I mean, we could say that every beneficial invention of note was invented by a man. Or the vast majority of truly great works of art. But it would be meaningless without context.

Monsterslam · 28/02/2026 20:23

All those women have been in male dominated societies though. If women had the majority of powerful positions rather than the minority or token leader roles then the whole blueprint of what good leadership and strategic action looks like might be drastically different.

To name just two. Women have invented hundreds of things. They just don’t get the credit men get.

And speaking as an ex art teacher, plenty of women created phenomenal art. Again they were never credited or were just ignored

Women have always invented and painted. They’ve just been ignored. Women haven’t always started wars.

The Yom Kippur War was started by men from Egypt and Syria. This fact is not disputed. Unless Israel fought another war in 1973 that only you know about..?

How many were started by women as opposed to men?Confused
