Blocked in a car who parked in my space

2026baby · 28/02/2026 13:53

To be clear I own my flat and the parking space is part of my lease and is legally mine. If anyone wishes to use it they would need to have my permission as they would be trespassing otherwise. The space is on private land in a secure garage that requires fob access.

I have come home today from being away to find a random car parked in my space, I do not know who it belongs to. I paid to park on the street outside for an hour hoping they would move soon but no one did. Not wanting to spend any more money unnecessarily I have now parked in front of my parking space which has blocked them in. It is not impacting anyone else's space and allows free movement around the car park.

I have left a note on the car and put a message in the block's group chat but no one has responded. AIBU to block them in until I get a response?

I have nowhere else to park and I don't want to pay to park outside as its £4 an hour and I have no idea when they will move (So far it has been 3 hours that I am aware of). The managing agent is closed for the weekend but have been useless anyway when my neighbours have the same problem and as its a civil matter I can't call the police but according to google the car owner can call the police on me for blocking them in. I am also concerned in case they damage my car, again where would I stand legally if they did given that I have blocked them in?

YANBU. If there's a fob to get in, doesn't it seem likely s/he is a guest of someone else in your block? Some people will only stop being inconsiderate oafs when the result is THEM being inconvenienced - telling them how they're making problems for you won't do it. Just take some pics so if they damage your car you can report it.

@AnotherChangeDay it works in my building car park! People respect the authority of the cone unquestioningly 🤣

Good to hear! But people that are happy to park in someone else's space for hours on end - I can guarantee won't respect the cone. It'll probably be lobbed somewhere within 5 seconds

I can see why blocking them in is tempting, but I wouldn't. Legally 2 wrongs don't make a right, and blocking someone in is probably not legal whereas damaging property is.

Have you missed something in your post? Are you really saying that damaging property is legal??

YouDriveMeCrazyButICanDoThatMyself · 28/02/2026 14:59

The risk of them damaging your car is too great.
You Would have no proof and no recompense.

Do you have a dash cam op? Ours captured the number plate of a car that hit ours when parked. The bump activated the camera, the police contacted them when we reported it, you would have proof and recompense in that instance.

I heard of a space owner (DF neighbour) blocking someone in who repeatedly used their private spot, despite being spoken to. They purposely blocked them in and used their other car to go away for the weekend. They didn’t use their space again!

Bonkers1966 · 28/02/2026 15:02

Be very slow to move when asked. Very slow.

2026baby · 28/02/2026 14:49

Glad you understand! We actually haven't got any visitors parking unfortunately as each flat has one allocated space each so visitors can be a problem. On the whole though, people will just message the group chat and ask if anyone's space is free for the duration of their visitor. I always offer mine up if I know I won't be home during that time and so do many other neighbours so its just frustrating when people take the piss unnecessarily!

Why don’t you message your neighbours and ask if you could park on one of their drives for now as someone is on yours? Like you would if you had a visitor.

I know you shouldn’t have to but at least it would be free. .

Eh? Blocking someone parked in your space in a private car park is not illegal! Especially if you have actually left them a number to contact you on. If the person blocked in then decided to deliberately damage your car that would definitely be a criminal act.

summerily25 · 28/02/2026 15:07

OP I’ve had this happen before and it’s so frustraring. The audacity of people shocks me - we had one woman park in our spot and when we blocked her in hammered on our door swearing and yelling. This was years ago but we laugh about it even now.

Yerroblemom1923 · 28/02/2026 15:08

Can you knock on your neighbours' doors to see whose car it is and ask them to please move it?
Or maybe just park on a side road until they've gone so you dint have to pay charges? Not ideal, I know, but better than blocking someone in. They may need to exit in a hurry.

OnGoldenPond · 28/02/2026 15:09

randomchap · 28/02/2026 14:48

Or smear dog shit under their door handles.

Now that actually would be classed as criminal damage. Don’t do this.

Growlybear83 · 28/02/2026 15:13

Good for you, OP. I would do exactly the same in your position.

dapsnotplimsolls · 28/02/2026 15:14

You know the rules:

  1. Diagram
  2. Drink a bottle of wine so when they finally ask you to move, you tell them you're over the limit and can't drive ...

Did you miss the part about OP having a disabled parking space? That suggests that she might struggle with the mobility required to knock on every neighbour’s door, and to park elsewhere and have to get back to the building? Fuck the wrong parker if they need to leave quickly. OP needs to park in her proper designated disability park that she owns.

@2026baby Absolutely park the CFer in. It’s the only way some people will learn. Worked for me and DH when we had a similar situation.

dapsnotplimsolls · 28/02/2026 15:16

If it's a disabled bay and they don't have a blue badge then is that illegal?

Am I reading this incorrectly or are you saying it is legal to damage someone else's property?

atno · 28/02/2026 15:19

That's really annoying. People are so cheeky.
Just leave them blocked in until they contact you and then take your time moving your car.

JustGiveMeReason · 28/02/2026 15:22

Of course YANBU.

Iwantsandybeachesandgoodfood · 28/02/2026 15:24

100% leave your car there. Where I live if someone is stupid enough to park in a marked space, then they get blocked. Sometimes this results in profuse apologies, others times in arguments. Either way, I’m not parking further away, let alone paying because of a CF.
Stand your ground @50lbstolose !

ForeverTheOptomist · 28/02/2026 15:25

Drawing pins.

Upside down so they'll get multiple punctures.
(Sorry, am I being a bit childish?)

It’s definitely an arsehole move. Regardless it’s a privately owned car space so even if they had a blue badge it’s not a space that’s available for them to use. It’s only for the OP and anyone she chooses to let use it.

Then maybe a laminated sign saying Private Parking NOTE your car reg is recorded or something to let them know the consequences of their action.

@2026baby this matter does need a long term solution. Can all residents raise it as an issue and if you have a management company you can escalate it to, ask them for suggestions eg prominent signs in the parking area, plus each resident accountable for ensuring their visitor doesn't park in other residents' bays.

YiddlySquat · 28/02/2026 15:25

You’re being too polite if anything OP.

We are moving soon but at the moment I lived on a private road. I have a driveway dos the side of my house plus one opposite my house, in front of a detached garage (which is mine).

my dick neighbours agave parked their car on the driveway opposite and never, ever move it. Apparently it’s theirs, because the people before us let them use it. They’re absolutely vile humans.

ive looked into everything. The police won’t help, we’d have to take civil action which would cost thousands. We’re not happy here anyway so decided just to move and spend the money on solicitors fees instead

Yes, I read she had a disabled parking space but she hasn't revealed her disability. Not all disabilities involve wheelchairs/legs not working! (Although I appreciate this kind of thinking causes people to question those using the disabled toilets if not in a wheelchair or visibly disabled!)

Mum2Fergus · 28/02/2026 15:28

It’s illegal to deny access to road.
