To still be a bit pissed off over this?

Went out for a meal and a few drinks last night with friends. None of us were drunk, a couple of them were not drinking alcohol at all as they were driving. After meal I said I was just popping to toilet. I was quick. When I got back our table was empty, a waitress was cleaning it, everyone had gone and my coat was just left on the back of my chair and bag under table. I grabbed my stuff and left … outside they were all in the process of saying goodbyes etc, 2 had already left. When they saw me they laughed and said “sorry, we forgot about you”

How could they have forgotten when my stuff was still on the table?? I just think it was a bit rude. Or am I over reacting?

Wasn't this exact same thing posted a couple of weeks ago except it was the in-laws who left?

Topjoe19 · 28/02/2026 11:00

I wouldn't have minded if they'd at least picked up my bag & coat!

Highlandgal · 28/02/2026 11:00

Them leaving wouldn’t have annoyed me as some restaurants don’t have the room for people to hang about once they’ve paid. What is wrong is they left your belongings.

MyLimeGuide · 28/02/2026 11:00

Yeah it was rude but I wouldn't over think it. Not major.

Growlybear83 · 28/02/2026 11:02

I don’t think it’s wrong that they left without you but I would have been furious that they had left my bag and coat behind for anyone to take.

That wasn’t me but I’d be interested to read it!

It is a bit odd, but how many of you were there? If it were only 4 or 5 of you, I can't see how they wouldn't notice you missing, or that your bag and coat were still there. If there were a lot of you, it would be more understandable, as there would have been some hustle and bustle while leaving.

BillieWiper · 28/02/2026 11:05

Well they literally admitted they forgot about you. So I guess you just have to take it as that's what happened. I mean I wouldn't like the idea that I'd been forgotten about but I can't imagine it was intentional or malicious. There's little point dwelling on it. I'd hope.

Yes I read a similar thread recently. If I’d taken my things to the toilet I wouldn’t have minded, but I wouldn’t like my bag left unattended. I think the rude bit was them saying they forgot about you, unless it was said in a jokey way because you were taking ages

Crunchymum · 28/02/2026 11:32

Was the "sorry we forgot about you" comment a joke?

Could it be that everyone was keen to head off so they just took it outside?

Did anyone have to rush to catch a bus / train? Hence not waiting to say goodbye to you.

FWIW I wouldn't have taken it to heart personally. Although leaving your bag was a bit shit!

Insidesains · 28/02/2026 11:33

How long have you known then? Are you close to them?

Likeoohlaalaala · 28/02/2026 11:40

Had almost exactly this last night, was at a venue with music with 7 other ladies. Had seats but we were all up dancing and it wasn't that late,I went off to the loo then bumped into someone I knew, chatting for about 15 mins. When I went back to the seats half of them had left and the others were just going, said ooh I thought you'd gone (my bag and coat clearly still there) Annoyed me a bit but I'm sure no one meant anything by it, I hope.

Agree that leaving your stuff there was the issue, I'd not have left the belongings of a freind of mine

You wondered off for what must have been at the very least 20 mins

No that one was about their partner leaving and waiting in the car while they were in the loo, nothing about leaving her handbag under the table alone for anyone to take!
I’d be peed off too op.

Itsmetheflamingo · 28/02/2026 11:44

Just sounds like one of those less than ideal things that happen in life

Malinia · 28/02/2026 12:04

I would never leave without a member of the group, I think it's incredibly rude to do that. But people are increasingly selfish and thoughtless it seems.

merryhouse · 28/02/2026 14:04

What I find weird about all these incidents is the number of posters who appear to find it entirely normal to leave ones bag at the table when going to the loo.

What if there were an Incident and you were left without your purse phone and keys?

KnowtheAnswer · 28/02/2026 14:23

Yes I think that was a bit rude OP but if they're not usually like that then I'd try to let it go.

Uticary · 28/02/2026 14:26

Yes, this was very rude.

TheDenimPoet · 28/02/2026 14:32

They're not being rude by forgetting, nobody forgets things on purpose, you're not rude if you do something you can't help. Sometimes people can sidelined when you're out with a group, it's not always easy to make sure everyone's there, and I honestly don't think it's that much of an issue.

Yeah your stuff was left, but everyone will have just thought it was someone else's. Diffusion of responsibility.

What kind of incident are you expecting in the loo where you need your purse and keys?

Growlybear83 · 28/02/2026 14:36

@TheDenimPoetI wouldn’t have left my bag under the table to go to the toilet - not because I would feel that I needed it (although I might want to have a spray of perfume or touch up my lipstick), but because I would be concerned that it might get stolen. I wouldn’t expect other people to take the same level of care of my bag as I would unless I specifically gave them my bag and asked them to look after it for me.
