I use Ancient and Brave - it’s really helped with sore joints and aches and pain.

Thank you, I've been wondering whether to buy this as I have terrible hip and knee pains. Tried Nutrition Geeks which is okay but I need something that's a little bit more effective. Can I ask whether you take the marine or bovine?

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 01/03/2026 00:19

I read everything I could find on collagen before buying it - there’s very limited research - but Wild Nutrition & Nutrition Geeks (who I trust) both cited positive independent research on hydrolysed marine collagen. I thought I’d try it for an initial six months as I had a half price promo offer so bought a load at once. I could see a big difference in my hair after 3-4 months and 7 months later the difference is really notable. My hairdresser has commented on it twice - it feels strong, full and looks glossy. It absolutely is working for me!

As she says, collagen's useful for people who aren't getting enough protein. But it's less nutritious than actual food protein. Brits - especially women - are often protein deficient.

I was convinced collagen powder was helping my arthritic knee and boosting my hair growth. Then I looked up my actual daily protein requirement 😮 At 70kg and over 65 years, I need around 80 grams a day. So I whacked up my eggs, fish, meat & tofu and bought some beef protein powder to fill any gaps. Stopped taking collagen. Knee still doesn't hurt, hair still growing.

Protein: how much do you need?

BHF Senior Dietitian Tracy Parker explains how much protein you need per day, if protein leads to weight gain, and which foods are high in protein but low in calories.

Anyone tried Nutrition Geeks? My friend swears by it but can't say I've seen a difference in her- not that id say anything!

I have the collagen glow up from nutrition geeks. It seems really effective, I have lots of hair growing around what was a thinning hair line, skin definitely better. It also contains a fair bit of protein.

gillefc82 · 01/03/2026 02:09

I’ve been taking Spoiled Child liquid collagen since last June (I’ve tried both flavours and prefer the mango to the pineapple but both are fine). When choosing a collagen supplements you need to make sure it has a dose of at least 5g, it must include vitamin c or your body won’t process it effectively and should ideally be bovine collagen as that most closely replicates our own natural collagen so is best.

Flomingho · 01/03/2026 02:20

Yes, the Holland & Barratt Bovine ones. I wouldn't say they have made a noticeable difference to my skin but my hair is thicker and in better condition.

eyeoresancerre · 01/03/2026 07:39

@WinterBlues26 I take the Bovine collagen. I was a surprised it worked quite quickly as I thought it would take months but after a few weeks my hip felt 60% less sore.

Very useful, thank you! I wonder if a decision was made in a marketing department that selling protein powder to women would be difficult as it’s associated with men doing bodybuilding, so they’re selling it as “collagen”…

Itsallsostressful · 01/03/2026 07:54

I use the Will Powders one. I think it's good and was recommended by beauticican/pma.

glowfrog · 01/03/2026 07:56

@FurForksSake have you noticed any difference (and which?). since taking creatine? If yes, what brand do you use?

OneWorthyLemonCat · 01/03/2026 08:06

I've taken Holland & Barratt high strength bovine collagen and vitamin C for 12 months. But when my latest tub runs out I'm not going to replace it. I eat a g of protein per lb of my body weight per day, so feel I get enough collagen through my diet and could save the money (£30 a month).

Yes I started taking them because I had osteoarthritis. I was amazed how soft they made my skin and hair. Both feel lovely and even my hairdresser commented on what good condition my hair is. I’m 67 and my skin is very healthy I don’t have as many wrinkles as my friends of the same age although I do have have some, mainly when I smile. They made my eyes look brighter and my nails stronger. I’ve been taking them for about 3 years now. My arthritis has improved but that could be because I started going to the gym twice a week for about 2 years now. I won’t stop taking them

What do you take? I’m in agony

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 01/03/2026 09:13

I made a mistake with my post - it’s Wild Nutrition and Dermatica that mentioned the hydrolysed marine collagen. I didn’t take the Skin Geeks one as it’s bovine. The research says 500 dalton-weight peptides is the weight that’s absorbed by the body. The Wild Nutrition one comes with Mesoporosil which also is meant to improve absorption according to the research. I trust those two brands in general because they only sell things that are tested so I think it’s as good as evidence as I can find. However, the collagen that I say with absolute conviction is 100% working for me (Wild Nutrition) was tried by this journalist who said it was useless… https://inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyle/wasted-months-taking-collagen-what-do-instead-3610932

Thank uou

FurForksSake · 01/03/2026 10:06

@glowfrog yes, definitely for exercise and there are supposed to be improvements for tiredness and brain function which I see less of but I’m chronically ill. Husband says he feels all of the benefits. I take a capsule version from mobu as I don’t like anything in powder form!

Zanatdy · 01/03/2026 10:07

just started some today, colleagues recommending as struggling with peri / meno and aching joints. Mixed it in with my morning brew and it tasted fine (I was worried about taste). Will add it to first brew of the day, and hopefully in a few months will start to see benefits.

CoraPirbright · 01/03/2026 10:11

I take Elavate! My hips were really badly aching, then I started on this and the aching stopped. No other changes in my diet/exercise at the same time, so I think it’s working. I am sure my skin feels better too - a little bouncier? Anyway, I don’t know if it actually works or if it’s psychosomatic but, frankly, who cares? My hips dont ache like a bugger anymore 🤷‍♀️

Thanks! I’m desperate to get myself out of this awful brain fog and tiredness I have. Am on HRT and had blood tests before Xmas that came back normal except for being a bit low in Vit D so I’m taking that in supplement form as well as magnesium.

glowfrog · 01/03/2026 10:25

@FurForksSake sorry, wanted to add to previous but it’s not letting me edit my post: Does your husband also take the Mobu capsule?

FurForksSake · 01/03/2026 10:27

@glowfrog yes, we share supplements so he does. I think it’s 4 capsules for a dose.

Mosaic80 · 01/03/2026 10:32

I take this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Marine-Collagen-Powder-Women-Hyaluronic/dp/B0CJVP7CSB/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?adgrpid=191093514149&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.I9Iv7t_IDRKq1gUm-BX6w7ChPx5Yt2Wg-J4Php5eeaqMKq2a0R8z-FsqJoWvXWEPfJOUXrBY-32Zgl9dfh1_-wChWicpeuYAx1SB40K89ne68oCosxcCzNXuRJfsT22g7Iq2FSfuUpLU1B5WVXfuydsNcBTZxz9I0oRASHYOsJGSFPT1GFvTEuBXl5o2KkzbdD1W0Nnqs4OWDEpyXdGUag.LiDRkcjNnfPm_KqWwuU_PrehOXOD6gR28jRN0DAQnYI&dib_tag=se&gad_source=1&hvadid=793520872289&hvdev=m&hvexpln=0&hvlocphy=9045587&hvnetw=g&hvocijid=286914192931795196--&hvqmt=e&hvrand=286914192931795196&hvtargid=kwd-297385161728&hydadcr=13984_2438835_408720&keywords=amazon+collagen+powder&mcid=dfa5c27ba03d3fb99397c1bfffe559d2&qid=1772360917&sr=8-1-spons&aref=hiFCJz9qO2&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfYXRm&psc=1

it has various things added plus a good price and it’s pretty much tasteless. I add it to coffee because it does thicken the drink slightly and (slightly) thick tea is weird! I think it has made a bit of a difference to my skin although stopping/reducing drinking and tretinoin has made more difference imo!
