People stealing from Greggs

Has anyone seen the videos of people stealing from Greggs? Seems to be constant, I’ve witnessed it myself a couple of
times, staff don’t do anything though can’t say I blame them. I was in Croydon the other day and noticed that one of the Greggs now has a security guard. However just now I saw a video online of another Greggs in Croydon and 2 men attacking the security guard in there?! Attacking someone over a sandwich! AIBU to think they should keep them behind the counter?

I witnessed a guy in a suit of all things doing this yesterday , another customer started screaming at him to come back, the perpetrator just walked away casually. The staff didnt seem to care! They should just put everything behind the counter

Seen this in my local Greggs, a guy casually putting loads of baguettes/salads etc into his bag. Staff didn't notice (I didn't want to cause a fuss and have any confrontation). 5 mins later i'm still in the queue and he comes back and starts loading the multipacks of donuts/shortbread etc into his bag!!

The staff don’t say anything I wouldn’t get involved, one of them asked me to call the man back but I didn’t get involved don’t fancy getting a punch, don’t know why he didn’t want to do it himself. I don’t blame them not saying anything the way they were attacking the security guard over a sandwich was crazy.

I don't go in Greggs and hadn't heard anything about this but it really doesn't surprise me.

I was watching the news item yesterday about the literally massive problem.of people stealing chocolate and confectionery. One of the shopkeepers said that when she tried to stop someone exiting her store with actual boxes of chocolate bars the shoplifter actually was surprised and asked her what the problem was. He really didn't think he was doing anything wrong.
And I think that's the problem: people see no moral bar to stealing from retailers of any sort. They think anything is fair game and it has no consequences

JulieMcCoy · 25/02/2026 10:27

It happens frequently at my local Greggs. People come in, take their time choosing something, then simply walk out without paying. It’s generally teens going to school and adults heading to work. Some of the staff will approach frequent offenders and force them to leave, others just leave them to it.

Personally, I spent enough time working in retail to know that I would never intervene, it’s just not worth the risk.

LancashireButterPie · 25/02/2026 13:41

DH and I were in M and S and witnessed a woman grab a whole rail full of jackets and run out of the shop with them into a waiting car.
We were stunned at the audacity.
Reported it to staff who said it happens all the time.

TashaG · 25/02/2026 16:42

I am currently working in retail and it is bad :/ I'd hate to know the full figure of what we lose in a day and police aren't keen to do anything unfortunately.

It is driving up prices though along with other factors.

Yeh I’m not sure why you’d have to call someone back. I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to potentially be in line for retaliation.

They’re scum. I go to Croydon once a week to Greggs and all the ones there have security guards.

ldnmusic87 · 25/02/2026 16:50

I see lots of teens doing this regularly, also in Poundland, they just wave at the security staff

YourSassyPanda · 25/02/2026 16:51

They’ve been advised again and again by all kinds of organisations not to place products on open displays, near doors etc but it seems to be their sales model. Not that they should have to of course but the design of the stores really doesn’t help their security. My local one is exactly the same.

ImWearingPantaloons · 25/02/2026 20:52

Shop lifting is getting increasingly brazen and out of control.

I work in retail and would love a law to be passed to enable us to have tazer training.

I’m sick of it all to be honest…

BigCola · 25/02/2026 20:59

Does seem to be a big problem, I was in Poundland earlier and a big group of school boys came in and you could see the staff and security felt uncomfortable.

Stealing value things is basically permitted now (as long as you don't have a job that you might lose because of a criminal record). So awful people do as they please.

AsimpleOstrich · 25/02/2026 21:11

I worked at Greggs 20 years ago and shoplifting was rife then.
We'd put out 15 tuna and cucumber sandwiches (for example) and 5 minutes later they would've mysteriously disappeared and we hadn't sold them.
Prior to working at Greggs I worked somewhere that sold sportswear, we'd have people come in and remove a full rail of sweatshirts, walk out of the store and jump into a waiting car. It was a regular occurrence. Absolutely nothing we could do and the police weren't interested.

NorwayTruce · 25/02/2026 21:14

It’s endemic these days. It never used to be. There was a time people would never do it because they knew they wouldn’t get away with it. They would always get caught either by security or the police. Now they know nothing much will happen to them. They know security can’t do anything and the police won’t turn up for shoplifting. It never used to be that way. You’d be detained by security and arrested by the police. Now, nothing. It’s a free for all.

And if security and the police do turn up, still nothing will happen to you following x hours of paperwork and a court appearance.

I’m sure the staff do care but given what they probably get paid, I’m not sure I’d be putting myself in harm’s way to save a sandwich.

Sartre · 25/02/2026 21:16

People act like it’s new for some reason. I worked in Greggs when I was at uni years ago and it happened then. It wasn’t constant but it did happen. Usually baguettes and the donuts in boxes in the middle. We obviously didn’t have security and we were all women so there’s no way it was worth chasing a man down for a baguette.

StonwEd · 25/02/2026 21:18

I watched two people in Liverpool St wasabi nick boxes from close to the door the other day. I can't get too worried about it, I figure they need food. Didn't really think about it much until this thread

Vinted.

XenoBitch · 25/02/2026 21:21

I have not seen videos, but I have seen it myself in person loads of times.
The weirdest one was a guy who came in and just walked out with loads of sausages rolls, then came back in... bought a coffee, and sat down inside to drink it.

Where I live, there's 2 sisters who are addicts and treat Greggs like their own personal larder. They come in, have a browse... take it and go. Daily.

One of my nana’s younger friends shoplifted all the time (clothes mostly) and rarely got caught.

HeadyLamarr · 25/02/2026 21:31

Christ.

Imagine having standards so low you're prepared to commit a crime for a Greggs pasty.

Batfemale · 25/02/2026 21:33

They should definitely up their game.
If they’re going to do it, target Pret. It probably has a street value.
