Why is it so hard to lose weight but so easy to gain weight

I have been trying for the last two years to lose weight. It took me about six months to lose three pounds. Then I went to my parents for Christmas, ate more than I usually would and I put on three pounds in one week. Three months later i havent been able to shift the three pounds. I go out walking every day, I go to the gym three times a week. I eat pretty healthily. I only let myself have snacks one day a week. The rest of the week is soup, salads, chicken etc. I hate the mental exhaustion of trying to lose weight.

Why does it take so long to get weight off, but so little time to put weight on.

Just regular kitchen scales (digital). I used myfitnesspal to log it all too. I also log it as I'm going so I don't accidentally over eat. My dinners are all planned out so I know day to day what calories I have for the rest of the week.

I usually have a galaxy light hot chocolate (38 cals). But sometimes a cup of tea (with measured and logged milk!). You can have whatever you want, if it's in your calorie allowance!

I use myfitnesspal already. It doesnt seem to work for me.

Ill try the scales though thanks

Do you think we inherit genes aswell. Im sure I read that somewhere. My grandfather was starved for a lomg time by the Nazis. I know its my own actions, but my body also seems to panic if I dont eat.

We inherit all of our genes but our genes don't work in the way you describe.

I believe you have just invented Lamarckian Theory

Yeah i do feel like its an addiction. Ther is food addictiom

Its like trying to quit heroin. So many people struggle to quit.

OP I am making no progress either, it's annoying isn't it! I think good sleep is important too as I read something about bad sleep and weight gain , my sleep is always terrible now but until 5 years ago when slept better I was always a size 10 and ate like a horse and didn't exercise . I think either that or my stage of life hormonally (late 40s) are suddenly going against me!

I eat very healthily too - always home cook , lots veg , no puddings really . It's so annoying . I'm tempted to try fasting as it's meant to have health benefits but keen for any ideas too . I might increase eating soups and more protein !

No, the body won’t hang on to calories but it will do everything it can to make you eat them. AND it does slow your metabolism.

this article referenced some studies that support what I’m saying. I learned this as part of a science degree at university so I am not just spouting myth.

I am 68 and have not exercised like you, but lost a lot at Slimming World. Unfortunately I got Covid again and stayed home overeating and I’ve just had a fright because my weight gain has given me very, very high blood pressure. I was told to take my pressure at home and return to the surgery if still high but I’m just going to lose weight. High blood pressure can cause strokes/heart attacks but also cause your kidneys to form stones - a friend now has stage 3 kidney disease.

I am avoiding all processed foods, and anything containing palm oil or palm fat. I do think Michael Mosely and the Fast 800 is safe and it works - I have rejoined the site. I’ve bought a month’s Jane Plan to try - it has just arrived, I’ll see what happens but I need to lose stones.

Good luck - try not having anything with palm oil, see if that makes a difference.

Why are you singling out palm oil (leaving aside the ecological argument)? It's not higher in calories than any other culinary oil. It's this sort of misinformation that leads to problems.

I find walking the dog 5 miles a day which is 10,000 steps exhausting, but does keep the weight off me.

Thankfully, I’ve found my ying and yang with eating, which is a big salad with a lump of meat or fish twice a day, a big kilner jar of overnight porridge and a good litre of some sort of veg soup daily and a fun sized apple, pear, banana, a few grapes, half an advacado, a little bit of melon, I do like raw cauliflower and raw carrots too. I also drink a minimum of four litres of water daily.

No crap in the house, and shopping is done by my husband, as he sticks to the list!

I have a fairly stable'ish weight (even if a stone heavier than I ought to be for my knees) and have various diet changes during each year to help me stay a bit even stevens.

The most useful thing I have noticed is that anything carby fuels my hunger drive massively. If I stick to proteins and fats and limit carbs (both sugary things and bready, pasta things) my hunger pangs are much lower and it's easier to stick to a healthy balance.

I tried starting the day with a bowls of porridge a few weeks ago and it sent me into a tailspin. I was starving all day no matter what I ate.
So I am back to eggs (all ways), greek yoghurts, tuna salad, bananas and avocados during the daytime. Eat what I like for my evening meal but with half the amount of carbs I'd have if I was just eating without thinking.

This method seems to keep my hunger at bay.

When I have had my tea and coffee quota, I drink bovril or miso (spoonful of either in a mug with hot water) - the saltiness helps me combat hunger pangs in between meals

Yet im still three stone overweight!

Have breakfast and get rid of the bread. Have the sandwich filler with a salad.

A filler-upper 100g of 0% Greek yoghurt with handfuls of blueberries.

No sauce on the pasta.

I wish there were more books on how to train the mind when dieting.

How much do you need to lose? Would you qualify for the jabs? They quiet the food noise apparently.

Three stone.

I did try the jabs last year. They just made me really terribly sick. They made me have no control over my bowels. I was pooing myself when out walking. On mounjaro, One time i pooed myself on a train. No control. It was awful

I was vomiting and weak. I tried mounjaro for three months. When they were making me too sick to go to work, I had to give them up.

Because, and I've battled it all my adult life, caveman us struggled to get enough calories to support their lifestyle, so we developed to store as many calories as possible.
It's only been the last 50 years when we've moved away from lifestyles that needed more calories than we do today.
So we store fat and today we live off too big portions, prepared food designed to taste great and eating out

Jeez I'd rather be 3 stone overweight.

I would simply avoid UPF, cut out sugar and make sure you have at least 5 big portions of fruit and veg a day.

Exercise doesn't help much with weight loss but you should do it because it's good for you.

You're right there is a genetic component to obesity that impacts "willpower" and environment also impacts weight.

I have thick Greek organic yogurt (NOT fat free, I think it's 5% fat), berries and almond butter and/ or nuts and hemp seeds for breakfast. It's delicious and nutrient rich.

Obviously not. That was just part of the study that I quoted. Studies say that we can inherit genes like this from both grandparents.
