I get SAD the wrong way round. No one else I'm my life has it , but I find spring really depressing and unsettling . Anyone else?

I am soooo excited. I'm done with the dark, cold & damp now. I love the longer days.
We got a puppy mid November and I cannot wait to be walking him in the dry and daylight and warm (not hot) sunshine after work.

deplorabelle · 25/02/2026 14:18

Hello people who hate winter and get SAD. You always tell winter-loving people to fuck off out of your threads when they pop up and say how much they like autumn, please don't do the same here.

I have summer variant SAD which I've battled all my life. Spring is the worst time because the DREAD of months and months of hot bright days is just awful. I specifically took up gardening so I would have something to look forward to about summer and it's mostly worked. I don't feel too awful these days and genuinely enjoying seeing my plants come into leaf and flower. But sometimes someone says something that catches me unawares - like last week someone said in a meeting "and I can speak for all of us when I say isn't it lovely summer is coming" and it was like nails on a blackboard to me. Not only is bloody summer coming to burn me out of of my jeans and fill my head with wasps, but everyone else is dancing up and down for joy.

Ninerainbows · 25/02/2026 15:48

Gardening is one of the reasons I hate it. I dug out loads of weeds and dead annual plants this week and now it just looks brown, dead and crap in the sunshine. The chairs have gone rusty and need sorting, a big trellis has broken and so on. It's like an extra room to clean!

Deliaskis · 25/02/2026 07:28

I totally understand this...I love autumn and don't mind winter (although we have horses so very more enjoyment out of then in the drier months obviously).

I'm interested though.... people who aren't a fan of spring/ summer.... would you describe yourself as introverts? Because my autumn happy feeling i have realised is somewhat connected to drawing curtains... feeling safe in my own private space etc. I don't mean I feel unsafe at other times, but i find autumn gives me more restorative alone time indoors. Curious to know if this is a common theme.

Yes I think you might be on to something

As the first ray of sun poked out from behind the clouds yesterday the football was out in the road. Bomp bomp bomp. Roll on October.

its your life thats shit not the time of year (applies to all SAD).

Really nasty post and not borne out by any poster on here

I'm not an introvert at all, I'm as busy whatever the month (I run 2 social grouos)
For me it is literally the change of light etc

Yes I do. I hate summer and dread it coming.

Someone's projecting, I see.

OP, I'm like you. No trauma or anything, no negative associations. I like flowers, being outdoors, wildlife etc. But I absolutely loathe longer, lighter days. It really bothers me and makes me feel weirdly exposed and unsettled. March and April are my least favourite months of the year and I really struggle with them.

No but I do feel like I get it in the summer , which again is the wrong way round , I feel the pressure of summer too much it’s like everyone else loves it and you are always expected to be out the house enjoying the weather so I get it . But I do like spring . Autumn if deffo my fave season of all.

NimbleHiker · 25/02/2026 18:20

I have mixed feelings about spring. I like the fact that it is getting lighter. My garden is coming back to life. However early spring can feel like an extention of winter and then it just switches to summer. I don't mind warm weather as long as it isn't 30 degrees for weeks on end. It is too early to have a drink in the garden and my hayfever is starting.

This is exactly me! Like being out and about, love warmth, like gardening etc etc etc
It's just is an exposing feeling . I have a theory . It's the sense of something getting exponentially bigger - more and more and more light , rather than something shrinking (getting darker)

No, actually, my life is fucking brilliant. It’s just something in my brain tells me that the lighter nights and warmer days are wank and cause me depression….. must remember to tell others with mental health conditions that their lives are shit.

Do you often comment on posts you know nothing about? Makes you look really silly.

It’s meant to look shit at this time of year.

More important is that it’s part of the natural world. It’s a home to insects, birds and small mammals. You have got an amazing thing there, even if it’s not visually perfectly

IHateSpring · 25/02/2026 18:46

Yes! I’ve posted about this before (hence, appropriate username 😂).

No one I know understands it at all. Someone was literally ribbing me about it today!

the best way I can describe it is that it makes my skin crawl. Like, the cold, light nights and the birdsong makes me feel really anxious, unsettled and sort of sick to my stomach. I call it my Spring Scaries.

WellHardly · 25/02/2026 18:59

Honestly, though, I used to live somewhere where there were essentially no seasons — daylight was the same year round, it was always hot and dry and summer was distinguished from winter only by being hotter. And the unchangingness was incredibly depressing. You don’t fully appreciate the seasons you enjoy if you haven’t come to them through the ones you don’t, and either way, they pass.

Overtheatlantic · 25/02/2026 19:11

I think threads like this show how unbalanced the weather is in the U.K. I’ve always enjoyed all the seasons and everyone I knew until I moved here felt the same. There was always some complaining about excessive heat/humidity but not the level there is in this part of the world. I grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC, for context.

EleanorReally · 25/02/2026 19:14

i have a dog so for me that is why i love spring, i walk in the woods, see the wild flowers, hear the birds

Surroundedbyfools · 25/02/2026 19:15

Me !!! I hate the harsh glaring light in spring and I don’t like summer either. I hate the pressure in summer to constantly be out doing things and that ppl feel like need to be on the piss constantly. I hate sweating my tits off and my hair constantly being sweaty in summer. I’m not an outdoorsy person I don’t want to sit outside ! I love the softness and coziness of autumn winter

DeanElderberry · 25/02/2026 20:28

I love Spring and the flowers and the birds and the daylight BUT if depression is going to land on me, March is the month, as a winter's worth of darkness catches up. Worse this year I think because I was unwell in December and between that and the weather I have been outside very little for months. And I forgot to use my daylight lamp in the mornings.

Nettle soup might help - I'll give it a try.

deplorabelle · 25/02/2026 20:43

Interesting there seem to be two different things at play - dreading the summer or not dreading the summer but feeling weirdly exposed at the sudden change in seasons. I can relate to both aspects of this - in the past I've felt desperately like I want to hide from the sun. Because I also struggle with summer I have to shut the squirmy feeling out and not allow it to take hold or I'll be sunk.

I do wonder if one contributing factor to the squirmy feeling might be low vitamin D stores after a whole winter with the sun low in the sky.

That is one thing I don't understand - the pressure you feel to be out doing things or get pissed. Just stay indoors and draw the curtains (and don't forget to take your vitamin D tablets if you don't want to spend time outside).

Snap!

I find Autumn and Winter whizz by way too fast.

Hate the Summer as the days seem never ending and loathe the heat. My Depression is worse during that time too.

Same here. Summer seems endless, I dread it

Mountainoutofamolehill · 24/02/2026 21:34

Yes me, absolutely! I always say I have SAD but the wrong way round.
It's the end of the winter season and means heat is coming. When it's a sunny spring day I'm like ffs. I know I sound nuts but it's true!

Yep. This.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 25/02/2026 21:06

No, I LOVE Spring. New beginnings, flowers blooming, leaves appearing on the trees, warmer weather, longer days, lighter evenings, places opening for you to visit... What's not to love? Smile

The worst part of the year for me is January and February. I hate them. As February goes on I tend to get better as I can see a light at the end of the tunnel, but I can't wait for March/Spring.

Sorry Springtime makes you feel blue @Apologynotaccepted 😘
