Ocado blocking entire road at 7.50am

Eseedeepee · 24/02/2026 08:22

On my way to work this morning at 7.50 and come across an Ocado van blocking the entire road, no way to get past and can’t reverse as it’s just beyond a bend and nowhere to turn around.

This house is on a corner so a choice of places for Ocado to park, plus they can use the trolley to park a bit further away. The van was about 4 meters from the front door.

Nobody in sight so I give a beep to let them know someone is there and can’t get past. Ocado lady comes out and doesn’t acknowledge the situation at all, no wave of sorry/ won’t be long, no speeding up etc. This is what really hit a nerve.

So I beeped again, this time out of anger more than anything, she wanders off carrying one basket at a time, so I beep again. Lady from the house comes out shaking her head at me doing T time out hands at me (I wasn’t beeping at this point).

AIBU?

Obviously if this was an ambulance, or a post man jumping out quickly, it’s different, but for me it was the audacity that someone thinks they can block the road at a busy time of day just to get their organic blueberries? And say you have a vulnerable person at the address - why can’t Ocado park a few meters further and use their trolley - isn’t that what it’s for??

And I did miss my train - by about 5 seconds! I’d even built in 5 minute buffer time to my 10 minute drive to the station and still missed it because of this! Late to work by 30 mins, so had to leave 30 mins late, so had to call school and get my 4yo a last minute space in after school club. All this I knew was going to happen when I saw the van blocking the road and why it made me so mad. What and I’m supposed to just sit and wait patiently for them to do their shopping. I could have done my own shopping in that half hour I lost this morning!

Unfortunately I think most people who have posted on this thread that don’t have places to be and understand the juggle of being a working parent. No major company or shop should allow their vans to block roads for their convenience

HighStreetOtter · 24/02/2026 22:46

I’d be raging and complain to Ocado about missing your train and telling them you want compensation for the cost of the after school club. I doubt they’d pay it but they need telling!

Is your employer really so unreasonable that if you are late due to unforeseen circumstances, you have to stay for an extra 30 mins at the end of the day, even with no childcare?

Thats a problem more within your control and ability to solve than ‘someone else on my street gets an Ocado delivery in the morning sometimes’.

What is T sign?

I find Tesco drivers’ assumptions that they can park like Ocado’s vans do to be terribly entitled, frankly.

😆

When you put your hands together in a t shape - like when you ask someone far away if they want a cup of tea, or in sports to say time out. It this case is was the home owner telling me to time-out on the honking…unless she was offering me tea…

I think you are overreacting.

Life is full of mild inconveniences like this, it’s just a feature of living around other people.

The huge rise in delivery services / vans is not reflected in parking availability; and there’s not really a solution to that, so they have to stop in the middle of residential roads.

And YABU for honking your horn at 750am on a residential street.

I was thinking this too! Happens to me too but I just wait.

Eseedeepee · 25/02/2026 18:42

No it wasn’t them asking - I work part time and go in the office once a week. This was my day in the office so seeing as I have limited time there I have a lot I need to cram into my day, and as I’m part time 30 mins lost is a bigger proportion of my time gone

itsgettingweird · 25/02/2026 18:46

I’m surprised how many people said YABU - it was a food delivery and they shouldn’t be blocking a public way at rush hour.

I agree with above an ambulance etc is a different thing. Last week my ds was taken to hospital by ambulance that blocked my road for about 45 minutes. My neighbours were all lovely (and my road is a one way in and out) but I doubt anyone would have been so patient for a shopping delivery and neither should they be.

Yeah, right! My question was more should I be this angry, not should have I waited?! They’ll be on here next with a post ‘I just illegally blocked an entire road so I could go shopping and someone honked at me, the audacity!’

Your ‘organic blueberries’ comment gives the game away, I’m afraid…

Hah and I only ever buy organic… maybe I was jealous she got a decent delivery slot

Next time take a photo and send it to Ocado customer service. They need to know so they can tell drivers not to do this.

Eseedeepee · 25/02/2026 18:55

Also for anyone interested, it’s illegal to block a road unless absolutely necessary (Ocado is not that) whereas honking your horn is a breach of Highway Code, and not illegal.

Interesting how people think being rude is worse than being illegal.

We have a similar situation near me, except it's a Tesco van. The person who lives in the corner house always gets a Tesco delivery every Thursday at pick up time for the primary school opposite her house. Without fail, it parks right on the corner so neither cars nor pedestrians can see round it. Just why?!

Edited

That’s so dangerous, and so self entitled! My grandma lived next to a primary school and got pissed off people parking outside her house so she parked her car over the footpath so the kids had to walk on the road. The headteacher came round and laid into her about it, brilliant, put her right in her place she never did it again

She said there was other parking available.

I took photos and checked them - the other corner of her house was a double drive with a dropped kerb that was completely clear, and 1 space on her driveway! Unbelievable

Londonrach1 · 25/02/2026 19:11

Glad others have similar problem..it's weekly here ..I've heard to avoid....why I never ever use ocado even if I could avoid food delivery

Definitely complain to the company. I get so fed up with shitty, inconsiderate arseholes.

Were parents blocking her access? Or just parking outside her house in general?

Nosejobnelly · 25/02/2026 19:30

I get Ocado too - a 3 min job if that for them to get the bags out and drop at the door. The hooting the horn would piss off the neighbours too so you’re also in the wrong. Your inverse snobbery is also ridiculous.

fetchacloth · 25/02/2026 19:41

We have a similar issue here, narrow road , virtually no pavement and it's a cul-de-sac, so one way in and out the road.
It's a nightmare for all of us if the delivery vehicle is badly parked.
I once had to call the police when a house removal lorry parked up and blocked the entire road. Some of these drivers are thick as well as tone deaf 🙄.

Bearsdolovetrees · 24/02/2026 09:48

Take a photo and complain. I get so fed up with this in our stretch of roads. All the people saying ‘oh hey can’t you wait a few mins?’ Well no, you can’t if you have a train to catch or an important meeting to get to. An Ocado stop is at least 5 mins which is the difference between being on time and missing a train.

If your timing is that tight you should maybe leave a tad earlier and consider possible traffic situations.

BananaPeels · 25/02/2026 20:17

I do have sympathy for delivery drivers but it is annoying when they block a road. I live on a road where it is hard to park so usually very few spaces in busy times . I was in a hurry to get in the other day as I had a meeting to join and there was one space left on my road and a massive delivery lorry turned up as I entered the road from the other end and stopped in the middle of the road by that one space and started to unload a load of flooring. I had to reverse down the entire road and park a few roads away and was late. It was just incredibly thoughtless. I usually don’t mind waiting a few mins for a quick stop but when they do it to block a road for 15 mins I think it’s a bit rude

Twinkylightsg · 25/02/2026 20:22

While I agree it sounds ridiculous. I follow the rule of leave at a time where your patience won't run thin and stress levels rise. So if you leave at 7.50 and get to work just on time you are leaving too late. I leave so that even if I were running 15min behind due to traffic or random stuff I would still be at work 5min early.

This way this stuff while annoying would not cause me to start honking. Honking is for emergencies not annoyances. So yeah yabu for honking and now inconveniencing everyone around you in their homes who may be sleeping or don't need to be at work this early because you are annoyed at the driver. While the driver was being unreasonable, so were you for honking.
