Scalp psoriasis shampoo v nice hair: AIBU To wonder if there is a scalp psoriasis solution which doesn’t cost £81 and doesn’t wreck your hair?

I don’t know if I’m missing something. My hair is like Worzel Gummidge at the best of times and psoriasis stuff prescribed by the GP or bought over the counter seems to make it worse. Some shampoos seem to make it worse.

Then Phillip Kingsley itchy scalp shampoo caught my eye. So I sent off £11 for a teeny sized bottle. Lo and behold, it was okay. But then I discover the full bottle retails at £81!!!

AIBU to think there is a magic solution which might both sort the psoriasis & not leave your hair like a dish brush? Other people will have had this problem before and must be equally vain.

Watching with interest.

I have scalp psoriasis and I use a medicated shampoo every other wash - and just lately it has really been reacting with my hair and its now dry and fluffy. I have bleached hair and the shampoo is wrecking it. I then spent a fortunately on intensive conditioners and oils to try and tame it down again.

I would not spend over £80 on a shampoo. I have been using Polytar, and I do find that the best one. Stinks, but it doesn't make my hair wiry. I ran out and have been using Neutrogena Tgel ..... and that is really not good for me.

What's the volume for £81? Is it a liter? If so, the cost isn't so bad over time as 1l bottle lasts me well over a year on medium-length hair which is washed 3 times a week.

Twasasurprise · 23/02/2026 12:41

Have you tried Vichy Dercos shampoo? (Amazon link.) There are a few different varieties, I use the Dry Hair one. It's the best shampoo I've found since Selsun was discontinued.

I have experimented with tying the hair up and just putting the scalp stuff on and then washing the actual hair but this is a ridiculous degree of faff and I don’t get time often.

I used to use Alphosyl but they stopped making it, the pharmacist recommended Capasal. It is woeking well.

With psoriasis you are not using a shampoo for your hir, you need to use it to wash your scalp, the shampooing is secondary.

cadburygorilla · 23/02/2026 12:52

Have you tried ginger shampoo from Body Shop?

PurBal · 23/02/2026 12:57

I use a topical treatment (Betacap) after washing with a shampoo bar (Faith in Nature). I still have flare ups and it’s not perfect but it means I can keep my hair in good condition. I have curly hair so don’t wash everyday.

Jinglealltheway92 · 23/02/2026 12:59

Came here to also say about the Body Shop ginger shampoo. Lifesaver

Comefromaway · 23/02/2026 13:02

I used the £11 travel sized Philip Kingsley (which is £31 in Boots for a normal sized bottle by the way or £54 for a mahoosive one) and whilst it was nice, it didn't sort out my scalp.

I decided to try Vichy Dercos and oh my goodness the difference. For the first time ever in my life, no itching, no bleeding no lumpy flakes of skin al over my shoulders and in my hair.

I then follow it up with an Aveeno scalp soothing oat milk conditioner which makes my hair nice and soft.

Body Shop ginger did nothing for me, I still itched a lot. The onny other thing that works is Neutrogena coal tar but it strips my hair.

TheAutumnCrow · 23/02/2026 13:06

Are you using a good quality medication on the actual psoriasis, OP, like Betnovate Scalp Application (0.1%), to clear it up? This is liquid in an applicator bottle, and it dries quickly leaving no smell at all. It’s available on prescription - I have it on repeat.

I use a caffeine shampoo, currently.

NUFC69 · 23/02/2026 13:06

My DD had/has psoriasis and it used to be dreadful on her scalp. I used to melt down coconut oil and anoint her scalp with it. Eventually cleared it and has never come back. Might that be worth a go?

StripedMug · 23/02/2026 13:06

T-Gel shampoo works for me- I like the one for dry scalp but they also have one for itchiness.

Morepositivemum · 23/02/2026 13:11

Not psoriasis so wasn’t sure whether to post but I do get extremely irritated scalp/ bleeding cuts/ lumps and I find garnier oat shampoo soothes my scalp but takes every last bit of moisture out of my hair so I use eg herbal essence blue shampoo and conditioner that hydrate and treat hair then back to oat shampoo when it’s ‘fixed’. Not an easy way to live but dry breakable hair bothers me as much as the horrifyingly sore scalp😅

Additup · 23/02/2026 13:19

I don't have psoriasis but I do get a dry itchy scalp in winter. The best thing I found was pure coconut oil. Not the stuff with added perfume etc, just the pure stuff you buy in a jar to eat. I got mine from Holland and Barrett.
I melt a lump in my hands and tun it into my call and hair every couple of weeks.
It's been brilliant and it makes my hair very shiny too 🙂
I wash it out with plenty of warm water and moo shampoo and then also condition with moo conditioner.

Folliculitis Scalp Psoriasis... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DZD2JNHP?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I’ve recently bought this and use it as a pre shampoo, over last two weeks it does seem to help.

I also really like head and shoulders leave on scalp moisturiser- it’s very soothing, reduces flaking and isn’t obvious or greasy when you style your hair

goldenhound · 23/02/2026 13:22

I was really struggling with dry/itchy scalp to the point I was scratching & pulling flaky clumps out. Used H’s anti dandruff stuff by accident & noticed a difference in itching the same evening. I ended up buying Aldi Moisturising anti dandruff shampoo & it’s transformed my scalp. Worth a try for £1.39.

Which one do you use please? There seem to be several

Another vote for Vichy Dercos ( recommended by dermatologist) but if it doesn’t work see a dermatologist privately and get a prescription for something that will work for you

MissyB1 · 23/02/2026 13:26

My ds has eczema on his scalp, he uses Moo Goo shampoo and conditioner, keeps his scalp flaked free and his hair is in lovely condition.

I came to say this too. Recommended by my dermatologist and has changed my life.

WorriedRelative · 23/02/2026 13:27

My sister who has psoriasis swears by moogloo products

Tortephant · 23/02/2026 13:28

Yes. Aleppo shampoo, unless your hair is fine.

NormalAuntFanny · 23/02/2026 13:29

I alternate my scalp shampoo with René Furterer Sublime Karite which is a bit like a coconut mask but not coconut.

My hairdresser pointed out my scalp was dry but not flaking and I would be as well to try to treat the dryness and crap hair when it wasn't actively having a flare.

Does really help and is about 25 for a tub

I use the green one for dry hair but the oily hair one is also meant to be just as good if you have greasy hair. Use the sensitive one if you react to fragrance.

Alphosyl was amazing. Used it once a week and it cleared up my psoriasis easily.

I now use DHS tar, but reading this thread I might give Vichy a go.
All the ones I've used have been awful for my hair, but I don't use it every wash. Usually only once a week or so.
