Scalp psoriasis shampoo v nice hair: AIBU To wonder if there is a scalp psoriasis solution which doesn’t cost £81 and doesn’t wreck your hair?

AStitchInTimeSavesN1ne · 23/02/2026 12:22

I don’t know if I’m missing something. My hair is like Worzel Gummidge at the best of times and psoriasis stuff prescribed by the GP or bought over the counter seems to make it worse. Some shampoos seem to make it worse.

Then Phillip Kingsley itchy scalp shampoo caught my eye. So I sent off £11 for a teeny sized bottle. Lo and behold, it was okay. But then I discover the full bottle retails at £81!!!

AIBU to think there is a magic solution which might both sort the psoriasis & not leave your hair like a dish brush? Other people will have had this problem before and must be equally vain.

I used to use Alphosyl but they stopped making it, the pharmacist recommended Capasal. It is woeking well.

With psoriasis you are not using a shampoo for your hir, you need to use it to wash your scalp, the shampooing is secondary.

This is me too. Capasal has coconut oil in which helps save your hair.

Comefromaway · 23/02/2026 13:37

I do recommend using a soothing conditioner alongside the Vichy.

stopringingme · 23/02/2026 13:49

They sell philip Kingsley on QVC @AStitchInTimeSavesN1neand it is often on offer, they have a litre size itchy scalp shampoo for £66.48 or you can pay over 4 payments of £16.62 (plus postage)

I have been using Australian bodycare shampoo that I bought from Amazon and that has been good - they also sell this brand on QVC so if you want to try it you can and you get 60 days to return if you don't get on with it.

Have not read thread, op, just posting on the fly. Dentinox baby shampoo for cradle cap. I found it really helpful. Its not expensive and its delicate.

BatsInHibernation · 23/02/2026 16:34

Mine is only mild but here's what I do. Three shampoos, three washes every shower. Very clean but not 'stripped' hair.
Clarifying shampoo - L'Oréal Professional Metal Detox. Wash hair with that once or twice.
Cantu Sulphate Free shampoo - wash hair with that once or twice.
Occasionally use t-gel 2 in 1aswell
Then a hair mask every shower. I use the Metal Detox one.
Be wary of products because even very natural ones can make me itchy. I can't use Boucleme for example any where near my scalp.

FrizzyFrizbee · 23/02/2026 16:44

I don’t have this condition but I noticed my hair condition improved massively using Green People shampoo. My absolute favourite shampoo, it doesn’t strip the natural oils from the hair.

Handmade Naturals is also quite good and they offer a travel bottle so you could try it at a reduced cost risk.

I was using Alphosyl but it was discontinued so went back to Polytar. I just put it on my scale then once washed out I use my normal shampoo. I use it once a week and it really helps me keep my scalp calm. However a few people recommended Capasal so I think I may give that a try. It is the active coal tar ingredient I'm most interested in as I think that is what helps my skin.

LoveSkaMusic · 23/02/2026 18:32

I actually use Nizoral, although it's not specifically for psoriasis, it actually made a huge difference to my skin in general. I also use it as a facewash to clear up seborrhoeic dermatitis. It seems like a magic cure for my skin and scalp. It's about £8 per bottle in supermarkets. I think my psoriasis is actually a combination of things including seborrhoeic dermatitis and eliminating one helped the other.

Cortexiphan · 23/02/2026 18:39

You can usually find a deal on the Philip Kingsley one somewhere. I think the £81 bottle is a litre isn't it? So it's really about 4 bottles. I used to get it from QVC and Amazon I think.

I use betnovate scalp on prescription once a week overnight, then whatever shampoo 🧴 want for my hair type.

30 years of psoriasis and I’ve tried everything, I need the steroids.

Conversationalcheddar · 23/02/2026 18:49

The only thing that worked for me was, strangely, the Tesco own brand dandruff shampoo. My scalp was weeping and blistered, tried all the tarry smelly expensive stuff. Had trouble sleeping because of the insane itch and burning. It sort of worked but made my hair brittle. When I was pregnant I laid off all the hard stuff and thought I’d try something that I was 99% sure wouldn’t work and… well, I swear by it. Hopefully they don’t change the formula.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/02/2026 18:49

QVC - I buy a litre at a time ( mainly for my DS )

I cannot use coconut oil , it brings my scalp up in lumps .

PK is a trichology brand you are paying for the science behind the name .
Itchy Flaky Scalp is the best I found for my son.

PermanentlyExhaustedPigeonZZZ · 23/02/2026 18:54

Betonvate lotion prescribed is the only thing that really works for me. I put it on twice before I wash it (early evening and just before bed) and it calms a flare after a week.

BellRock1234 · 23/02/2026 19:08

I find this is good (Aveeno), and suitable for coloured hair too:

I do have to use t-gel occasionally still though.

SuperGinger · 23/02/2026 19:25

Capasal. It costs about £8 and sometimes the pharmacist orders it in. Use twice a week, massage into the scalp and let it sit for about two mins, rinse thoroughly then use a good conditioner. We avoid steroid treatments.

SwearyBeary · 23/02/2026 21:41

As I Am "Dry and Itchy" cowash.

It's an amazing product I don't understand why it's not more popular (I have to buy it online).

I tried so many different medicated shampoos and topical treatments, steroids etc. All worked at first and then stopped. Been using As I Am for years now and no flakes.

I don't even need to use it every wash to remain effective so it might be worth trying even if you're not normally a cowash fan? You will need a rubber scalp brush if you're using a cowash.

Ragamuffin8 · 23/02/2026 21:44

The Body Shop Ginger shampoo, best one I’ve ever tried. It calms my scalp right down.

pinkharibo · 23/02/2026 21:54

Superdrug trichology range. I use the shampoo and conditioner (and the scalp tonic when I remember). Honestly has changed my life. 30 years of trying every product under the sun and have finally found my holy grail. Just hope they never stop making it.

TrashHeap · 23/02/2026 22:06

I have scalp psoriasis and have to wash my hair daily. I use T-Gel, but only wash the roots, NEVER the full length of the hair. When I condition, I massage it into the lower length of my hair, never the roots. If you spend a bit longer massaging the conditioner into your hair, it cleans and softens very well.

FrangipaniBlue · 23/02/2026 22:28

Polytar completely cleared mine and my dandruff.

i don’t use any conditioner, wash my hair every day and it’s in brilliant condition.

i should also add I swim 3 times a week so it gets a lot of stick too!

PuppyMonkey · 23/02/2026 22:48

I’ve switched between Polytar, T-gel, Alphosyl and the Philip Kingsley one as I’ve found my stupid scalp gets fed up of all of them after a while and they stop working.. I’ve had scalp psoriasis about 45 years now.

Bizarrely, I tried Head and Shoulders Classic Clean during lockdown as it was the only thing we had in at the time, and don’t say anything to jinx it, but this had been working fine now for about four or five years. Maybe it’s just my scalp changing as I get towards my 60s? Menopause and hormones etc?

Not sure. BTW the big litre bottle of Philip Kingsley was only £30 when I used to buy it maybe ten years ago.

Hermiaxx · 23/02/2026 22:50

Mustela shampoo (in the baby section!) and (diluted) apple cider vinegar as a final rinse helps for me

TheAutumnCrow · 23/02/2026 13:06

Are you using a good quality medication on the actual psoriasis, OP, like Betnovate Scalp Application (0.1%), to clear it up? This is liquid in an applicator bottle, and it dries quickly leaving no smell at all. It’s available on prescription - I have it on repeat.

I use a caffeine shampoo, currently.

I second this. Brilliant stuff .
