John Davidson shouting the N word during the BAFTAS

Crawse · 23/02/2026 10:02

John Davidson has Tourettes and is a campaigner for the condition. Whist Michale B Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting he shouted out the racial slur. It’s extremely uncomfortable to watch. I feel terrible for the two presenters. I’m really conflicted on this one.

What are your thoughts?

No one should be subjected to abuse. That is my bottom line. Maybe the fact I was called P*** (I’m half Indian) growing up has influenced my views. I obviously recognise Tourette’s is involuntary.

British acting awards interrupted by racist slur from man with Tourette Syndrome | CNN

At Sunday night’s BAFTA ceremony in London, a man yelled a racist slur as two of the world’s most celebrated Black actors, Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo, presented an award on stage.

The ugly underbelly of ableism. Although actually that's not exactly been an underbelly, it's overt.

Nothing to say to the poster who said there isn’t an issue with using the N word?

Thought not.

SpaceRaccoon · 23/02/2026 17:55

Would you like it if he gives up his job and his campaigning and locks himself indoors for the rest of his life then? Because that's the other alternative. That's it, there are no other options for that condition. You live your life, or you hide.

That’s a dishonest and manipulative response.

Glindaa · 23/02/2026 18:01

I do feel very sorry for the presenters, I agree even if unintentional , it still hurts and caused them embarrassment in what should have been an enjoyable experience for them.

I don’t know what the solution is though because John Davidson must be feeling mortified, and I imagine very sad that his condition stopped him from just enjoying and celebrating this once in a lifetime experience. I don’t believe he’s a racist.

Don't you see the irony in that?
A film about his Iife was nominated in several categories. And won in a couple.
The film was about his struggle and how society doesn't understand Tourettes.

Of course he should have been there.

The fact remains that two black men had the n-word shouted at them while they were presenting an award. I don't think that should be so easily dismissed. It can be deeply hurtful and offensive even if unintended. Similarly to if a person was physically assaulted by a disabled person who wasn't in control of their actions. The impact remains. I feel really sorry for all of those involved tbh.

That’s a strawman argument and it’s been used throughout this thread to mob anyone who’s questioned the appropriateness of John’s attendance at an event where he was apparently always likely to shout racial slurs in the presence of black people.

Why should he be shut out of the world though?!?! Which other disabiiites would you have sufferers of segregated or excluded in case someone gets offended? How utterly backwards.

Two wealthy healthy black men. They need to check their privilege.

I am still waiting to hear about the white slaves. Who are they? The ones that exist in 2026.

Are you really so ignorant?

In 2024 modern day slavery referrals were up by 13% from 2023.
13% of these were Albanian.

Then you have the issue of 1 in 3 North Koreans being enslaved currently…

Like I said I’m extremely conflicted. I feel very sorry for the black actors for being subject to racial abuse. Maybe non-poc won’t understand how terrible that feels. They were abused. Intentionally or unintentionally.

Edited

It’s an illness, he literally had no control over it. It’s not abuse.

Im from a minority group and wouldn’t take offense.

Ok, now I have genuinely heard it all. I really hope that was sarcasm.

This is why I stay on these threads. Chip beneath the surface, and the ugly underbelly soon shows itself.

Yours has indeed shown itself I'm afraid.

Ableism is never pretty.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 23/02/2026 18:01

Or because you're getting offended by somebody with a disability.

At the end of the day you can choose to be offended and slate a man that couldn't help it rather than an institution that failed to properly safeguard all involved by making sure everybody was aware there may be some offensive but unintentional language used or you can get over it, and accept this wasn't an act of racism and violence.

Thread has moved on. A poster has said there is no issue with people using the N word and the collective silence on this thread at that comment shows the 94% majority agree. Abhorrent.

I didn’t say there wasn’t an issue with it but I don’t think it’s deserved special status.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 23/02/2026 10:18

I realise that it's entirely involuntary and must be a very debilitating condition; but I'm curious as to how it's neurally triggered. I know some sufferers find that it presents with them saying/shouting neutral, inoffensive words - like that person on TV who used to keep randomly saying "Biscuits".

Was it just a coincidence that there happened to be two black people presenting when the N-word was shouted? Would it have been just as likely if they'd been white?

Again, I'm not blaming the sufferer at all; but just wondering out loud what happens subconsciously if an offensive word is said specifically 'targeted at' the object of it?

Years ago I saw a documentary about routes in which a young, male sufferer was being seen by a consultant with red hair and he shouted out "ginger pubes!"

It's as though the brain thinks "what's the worst thing I could say right now?" and then out it comes.

SlipperStar · 23/02/2026 18:05

Forgetnotyet · 23/02/2026 17:11

I was specifically referring to the BAFTAS situation.

The way mumsnet would react to the sight of a physically disabled person presenting a BAFTA award and someone from the audience shouting “spastic” at them while they were onstage.

Or an actress having someone shout degrading sexual things about her body, loudly enough for her and everyone to hear.

I suspect that if either of those things happened then there would be far more empathy on mumsnet for the person on the receiving end.

Well that would depend if it was someone simply being offensive or, if like this, someone unable to control themselves

In what context do they think it's OK? Surely not by white people?

Well both racism and disability are protected characteristics and neither override the other.

Edited, sorry I meant race.

If your DD called me a slur, I would not be happy. I don't care if she says she 'cant help it'. Why is my right not to be insulted less important than her right to go around being offensive?

good grief, are you not completely embarrassed to have reached adulthood with such an incredibly thin skin?

Lets take a moment shall we - if a disabled child called you a name precisely because they have a condition in which they have no control over - you wouldn’t think “Poor child, what a horribly difficult life she must be leading”…. instead you, an ACTUAL ADULT, would think “What about meeeeee if soooo offended at this disabled child”?

Genuine question - how do you function day to day? Do you always look for offence where there is none?

Vivi0 · 23/02/2026 18:07

This thread is an absolute shit show.

How can anyone in 2026 not know what Tourette’s is or what it looks like. People questioning if what he said was racist/deliberate etc.

I feel so bad for John Davidson today.

No wonder the rate of suicide is so high in people with his condition.

But you're saying a black person is deserving of more compassion and understanding than a disabled person....

NOBODY on this thread has said that.

But PLENTY have said people with Tourette’s deserve more compassion, empathy and consideration than any black people they may racially abuse.

North Koreans are not white.
And modern day slavery is not confined to- or even mostly- white people.
