SEND - children’s needs to be reassessed from year 6 2029?

Are they taking the piss? After the struggles parents have trying to secure support for their child, they’re then going to threaten to take it away once they’re due to go to secondary? Ds goes to secondary this year so I don’t think it will effect him but I am so angry for those it does effect.

Can I ask- DS (4) has an EHCP and is in Reception- he is going to repeat Reception as he is simply not ready to move to Year 1. So he would only be in Year 6 to apply for secondary in 2033 if I do my maths correctly! Is it likely by then we would not be able to name a school for secondary any more as they will have scaped the current EHCP system and ability to name schools by then or does this change only happen from 2035? Thankyou

You will probably be better off starting your own thread but in the meantime it is important to know that if you repeat a year your child can be put back into his aged year group when he moves schools. My son repeated y2 and then missed out y7. So you will need to look at a secondary move when he is in y4 so you are ready to move at the end of y5.
Noone can answer your question yet as we still dont know the full outcomes of the review. Also we could have another government and a whole new system by 2033 so its probably best not to think about it yet.

Thanks so much Geneticsbunny- forgive me as my brain frazzled- so would you say he would skip year 6 and move end year 5 to secondary to start year 7 with right aged kids? Is that choice mine to make or set in stone by schools/admissions process etc? As he is autistic but late in birth year too. Thankyou

@Sparksauty If DS is going to be in reception in the academic year 26/27, he will be in Y6 in 32/33 and, if he remains with the year below, start Y7 in September 2033. So, you will need to apply (or go through whatever the process will be for those with EHCPs) for a secondary placement in 2032. The proposed plan is for Y6 DC in MS with an EHCP to have priority admission for secondary so parents can 'choose the right school'. This is the brief information sheet with the timings on. However, what will actually happen will depend on what is passed because nothing is set in stone at the moment. The white paper is just that and there are often differences between white papers and what actually ends up happening.

There’s no mention of how DC who are educated out of chronological year group will be dealt with. I suspect they haven’t even considered it.

It is possible for DC being educated outside of their chronological year group to remain out of their chronological year rather than skip a year. Under the current system, you would want is being educated out of chronological year group included in F.

Thanks so much ExistingonCoffee

@op my ds stayed in nursery an extra year. We had it put into section f of the ehcp that he should remain in that year group and out of chronological year group throughout his education, so that he can make bonds/ friendships with peers, isn't impacted socially and won't miss out on a year of education. He has since moved to specialist provision but that still stands although isn't as important as it would have been if he'd been in mainstream. You'll likely need evidence probably from and ed. Psych to get that in.

Just so you're aware that they don't always have to go back into the correct cohort.

Geneticsbunny · 05/05/2026 18:29

@Sparksauty it depends on the school they are moving to. You have no say. You get to choose whether they move at y5 or y6 but if he is staying in mainstream then he will need to move at y5 to not miss out on getting a school place.

ExistingonCoffee · 05/05/2026 18:51

Even in MS, DC can remain educated out of chronological year rather than skip a year.

Unless it is an independent school, if being educated outside of the child is chronological year group is in F, it isn’t down to the school to make the decision either.

EHCP admissions are outwith the normal admission process, so the getting a school place reason doesn’t apply in the same way even if DC skip a year.
