To have said this to my cleaner?

NC for this. I've had this last cleaner for almost a year, I've had several over the years and although this one isn't all that great she's one of the best at cleaning and I will say is by far the most reliable. She comes every other Monday and sometimes I have to text her on a Sunday afternoon to tell her I won't be in as she has to use the key safe (usually I am home).

I wasn't home last time she came, and I won't be home tomorrow either. As always I thanked her for doing a good job, she's always said I must let her know if anything is missed out with her cleaning, so I asked her if she could make sure my laundry room gets a good clean as she forgot to do it last time.

Anyway, a while later she replied and said no problem, sorry if you thought the laundry room hadn't been cleaned, she said she had cleaned it but would give it a good clean. I replied to thank her and said I'd noticed that one of the wall cupboard doors had definitely not been cleaned which made me think she'd forgotten the room. Well she replied quite quickly by saying she knows which door I mean, and that she hadn't cleaned it because it looked like it was covered in dried cat sick (my cat often sleeps on the top of the wall cupboards in the laundry room) and that she didn't want to clean it, and that I must have known about it because otherwise how did I know it hadn't happened after she left? She said she left it as she didn't want to clean it up and thought it could be the thing we never spoke about, whatever that means. She then said she can't make tomorrow but would be in touch when she's free.

I suspect now that she won't be coming back, which is infuriating as it's impossible to get people to clean, all my friends that have cleaners tell me they are too busy and won't give me their numbers. I only found this one as she was cleaning for a neighbour one day. I had to wait ages for her to find a space to fit me in. But I can't help think she's taking this way too personally.

Really?
I just went back and reread ops posts and really can't see what is particularly unreasonable, let alone 'complete nightmare to work for'

She expected the cleaner to clean up cat sick and has a superior attitude.

You've insulted her and she thinks you left cat sick for her to clean up deliberately. Before hand it would have been the thing you just didn't speak about because it's universal that you clean up after your own animals emissions.

Then you had the nerve to pull her about it.

Now you need to find someone else.

And learn some pet/cleaner etiquette

Sorry what? Once more people who are self employed need to pay travel. Put aside money for taxes. Pay NI contributions. I was a self employed fitness instructor for years on 15-20 pounds an hour and I was far from rich. It's not the same as being on a salary - on any level!

And some cleaners and fitness instructors won't get 35 hours a week work - it's often insecure. Jesus fucking Christ what planet do you live on if you think 20 quid an hour self employed is a huge wage. It's not on any level

Here in the States it’s frightening.
You can’t afford health insurance but you can’t afford to go without health insurance.
The sleepless nights and sick stomachs I can’t even imagine.
And even with insurance, you pray every day and hold your breath that none of your kids get sick.
Or that you get sick.
I’m the youngest and somehow my mum managed to stay home until I was 9.
When I was much older I remember her laughing - actually laughing - and saying, “Can you imagine? We didn’t have insurance until you were 10! Isn’t that crazy?”
I think it was my mother’s version of whistling past the graveyard.
And us regular folks being able to afford insurance is what those big babies in Washington are fighting over as we speak.

This would’ve been resolved ages ago if a woman was in charge - I know that much for sure.

Yeah. My mum and I met someone on a bus last year. She was from the US and travelling around Scotland and she was doing it to get her savings down so she qualified for Medicare

It is frightening. I shattered my leg two years ago and it had to be pinned together and it didn't cost me a penny. I don't take the NHS for granted

cornflakecrunchie · 26/02/2026 17:05

I did a brief spell of cleaning when my kids were little.
Their dog shit regularly on the carpets..

She didn't though, not once she realised that's what it was.

Tbh, if I was cleaning for somebody, and there was animal mess, I'd just clean it up. Especially if it was an occasional accident.
I just don't get why someone that chose to be a domestic cleaner, would be so squeamish or why so many people seem to think it's an outrageous ask.
I've cleaned up shit or sick working in restaurants, in a school, in a hospital, in a rescue centre and as a a carer in people's own homes.
You can be faced with having to clear up gross stuff in all sorts of jobs, and someone has to

Thank you, @scottishgirl69 ❤️

In the United States your shattered leg would’ve cost a trillion zillion gazillion dollars and you’d hope and pray that that was your final bill.
To say it’s frightening here would be like calling a life-threatening disease a minor inconvenience.

We all have minor inconveniences, dontcha know.

Come off it… she realised it was cat sick and she then sent messages to the cleaner berating her for the dirty cupboard in the utility room!

So what if you’ve cleaned x, y or z? Now the OP has no cleaner at all so I presume she’ll be cleaning her own cat sick and house for the foreseeable future.

I have a problem with the people on here who think that cleaners are lowly and not worthy of respect. When they can pick and choose their clients, best believe you should start respecting them.

Come off it, why do you need to lie. She sent one, ONE reply to her cleaner just saying she noticed in hadn't been cleaned. No berating at all. Why do posters need to over-exaggerate and outright lie and rewrite what the OP says? I don't see what you get out of it, so why.

Cleaners are not higher or more important than anyone else. If we are paying for their service, we expect our money's worth. Or else we can sack them. We are paying for the service and we deserve what we paid for. You would complain too if you weren't getting what you paid for.

Grapewrath · 27/02/2026 08:55

Imagine leaving cat sick for your cleaner ffs. What an absolute piss take.
Domestic cleaners don’t deal with bodily fluids human or animal.
Most good cleaners have long waiting lists and will bin off clients who they feel are taking a lend or leaving jobs not in their remit. Lesson learned here OP, the cleaner can find another client easily but as you have pointed out, reliable cleaners are difficult to come by

Cleaners are there to clean, not pick up your cat’s sick. Get some standards.

Branleuse · 27/02/2026 09:06

And if someone is working in a pub and there's a dirty loo?
There's a whole bloody army of people that clean up and do all the stuff that keeps the world running.
It's not disrespect to hope that someone you pay to do a job, will do so. It's not a job that's always cleaning cat sick, but that on that day there was some.
Clean it or don't I guess, but it's not outrageous to expect your cleaner who earns more than me, will not be weird or snotty about it.

I always feel it ties into the whole thing about women feeling that they shouldn't have cleaners or expect anything more than light dusting of an already clean house.

Toilets are different- you throw some cleaner down and use a toilet brush at distance. It’s considered part of a regular clean. Most cleaners would do that but wouldn’t clean a toilet where the seat has been covered in shit or vomit.
Most domestic cleaners do not deal with biohazards and need extra training to do so.
Having said that, many will clean up the odd spillage or pick up a wet nappy. When I cleaned, I’d wipe up wee from the toilet floor or empty a potty first eg but would draw the line at cleaning up dried cat sick.. especially if the client had just gone out and left it for me to go

I’m not ‘lying’ the OP admitted that she saw dried cat sick on the cupboard door and then went out BEFORE the cleaner arrived!! She knew full well what she was doing.

Yes you can sack them….and they can sack you. Because they have a queue of people who will treat them better and not expect them to clean up animal emissions or talk down to them.
