To have said this to my cleaner?

NC for this. I've had this last cleaner for almost a year, I've had several over the years and although this one isn't all that great she's one of the best at cleaning and I will say is by far the most reliable. She comes every other Monday and sometimes I have to text her on a Sunday afternoon to tell her I won't be in as she has to use the key safe (usually I am home).

I wasn't home last time she came, and I won't be home tomorrow either. As always I thanked her for doing a good job, she's always said I must let her know if anything is missed out with her cleaning, so I asked her if she could make sure my laundry room gets a good clean as she forgot to do it last time.

Anyway, a while later she replied and said no problem, sorry if you thought the laundry room hadn't been cleaned, she said she had cleaned it but would give it a good clean. I replied to thank her and said I'd noticed that one of the wall cupboard doors had definitely not been cleaned which made me think she'd forgotten the room. Well she replied quite quickly by saying she knows which door I mean, and that she hadn't cleaned it because it looked like it was covered in dried cat sick (my cat often sleeps on the top of the wall cupboards in the laundry room) and that she didn't want to clean it, and that I must have known about it because otherwise how did I know it hadn't happened after she left? She said she left it as she didn't want to clean it up and thought it could be the thing we never spoke about, whatever that means. She then said she can't make tomorrow but would be in touch when she's free.

I suspect now that she won't be coming back, which is infuriating as it's impossible to get people to clean, all my friends that have cleaners tell me they are too busy and won't give me their numbers. I only found this one as she was cleaning for a neighbour one day. I had to wait ages for her to find a space to fit me in. But I can't help think she's taking this way too personally.

If there’s cat puke to clean, then yes.

I don't agree. I don't have a cleaner but if I did they certainly wouldn't be cleaning up after my cats

veganfortheanimals21 · 23/02/2026 13:25

Im so confused, why would a cleaner not clean up cat sick? If I had a cleaner I would want her to clean everything that needed cleaning! As in everything that I would clean up otherwise what is the point of being a cleaner? Seriously, what do people think a cleaner's job is? I've been a hotel cleaner in the past and cleaned up all sorts because that was my job.

Edited to say, of course I should say that a cleaner can be a he or a they, and not just a she.

I disagree completely. Most people I know who have a cleaner, whizz round before the cleaner comes and check that there are no skid marks in the toilet or anything else undesirable about.

People on here just think cleaners are all in the right. ‘If you don’t like it clean your own house you lazy so and so’ - is often said. Clearly not understanding that cleaners are paid to do a job and the person paying them to do the job is within their rights to question why it’s not been done properly.

We’ve only ever had one good cleaner / housekeeper. And we paid her well. The rest have been on and off pretty average - bad.

Cleaning means cleaning, not deciding which bits you feel like cleaning and which bits you don’t. Pathetic.

If it's disgusting cleaning like cat/dog sick, wee or poo, human incontinence or sick, etc. I don't think that is really part of the job description unless it's specifically included.

I don't have a cleaner and I still find the idea of leaving animal body fluids for one to deal with mortifying.

Then what is the point of employing a cleaner if you're going to do some of the cleaning?!

This is what she keeps telling me, that I pay for the experience, as she calls it. I asked when I first met her what her hourly rate was but she said she would need to see my house and would charge for what I wanted doing. The price includes the cost of all the cleaning things and equipment, though she has asked to use my vacuum cleaner as it is one that she likes. But I would much rather know how long she was going to be here and charge for each hour as sometimes I think she is rushing.

Gosh she sounds like a cleaner I have occasionally. You aren't in a city beginning with B are you?

shrunkenhead · 23/02/2026 13:55

WonderingWanda · 22/02/2026 19:59

It sounds to me like she is being a bit daft as well. She's clearly got it in her head you've left cat sick for her and instead of sending you a message saying "Sorry, couldn't face the cat sick so have left that for you" she's being all weird about it. My cleaner left a dead bird the cat dragged in whilst she was there, she out a bit of kitchen roll over it and send me a message. No big deal.

Mind you, if I was your cleaner I would probably have cleaned it up, not sure how suspected cat sick is worse than a skiddy toilet? Also, as the owner of a cat I can honestly say I've never seen runny cat sick. My cat just voms up hair balls.

I think it's universally acknowledged that people don't leave "skiddy" toilets for cleaners to clean.... certainly not if they want them to stay! It's the height of disrespect and speaks volumes if they can't even clean their own toilet of their own mess!

Abd80 · 23/02/2026 13:57

cleaners aren’t short of work where you are it seems. She’ll be off to work in a house where she doesn’t have to clean up vomit.

Its a sellers' market not a buyers'. If the person contracting them is too much of a pain in the arse, they can leave. The person paying does not necessarily wield all the power. The person they are paying is also weighing them up as to how much of a pain they are, and whether its worth it, given their other options.

Which are usually many, given as, despite some numpties here thinking its a well paid easy job, not enough people are prepared to do it. Because its not actually a well paid easy job.

Expecting your cleaner, or any cleaner, to clean up anything that comes out of a body, animal or human, is a minging human being. It's no different from the people who leave public toilets filthy because they either see cleaning up their shit and piss and the cleaner's job or they just don't consider the cleaner at all.

You say she’s not all that great, but one of the best at cleaning and reliable? What else do you want from a cleaner?

That was my first thought.

wellwatnow · 22/02/2026 19:59

Someone who is able to clean as well as I need it, although I know from experience people who are unreliable are much more difficult to manage. I thought this one was reliable. Maybe not.

You sound condescending OP.

BudgetBuster · 23/02/2026 14:29

You purposely left cat sick... then complained she didn't clean it up? And you are now surprised that a clearly busy in-demand good cleaner won't be coming back because of how you spoke to her?

You saw the cat sick, you chose not to clean it up or drop a quick message to her that you were in a rush and to avoid that room.

Hallebere · 23/02/2026 14:31

If this is your side of the story (you don't seem kind or reasonable at all, I can guarantee her side of the story will be much worse. This will have been the final straw for her having to deal with you, I imagine . You sound petty and demanding tbh and she doesn't need the aggro when by the sounds of it she can pick and choose customers. You've shot yourself in the foot here big time and you need to become more self aware on how you come across. Learn from this and move on.

StormyLandCloud · 23/02/2026 14:31

Go through an agency to get a cleaner

Luckystarss · 23/02/2026 14:48

The cleaner voted with her feet. And rightly so! She gets to decide who and how she provides services to.

It doesn’t matter that 1 or 2% on this forum think that cleaners should clean pets sick, and on top they should work for disrespectful people…

Ignoring your questionable statistics, a cleaner’s job is to clean. Ergo if there’s sick, clean the sick. It’s literally the job of a cleaner. Clean. Unless there’s an exception in the contract *do not clean x,y, z.

Are you suggesting people who pay a cleaner to clean, are disrespectful?

You think it's ok that cleaners clean cat sick - other people don't. If the cleaner didn't want to clean cat sick - that's clearly up to them. Where do we draw the line - puke? Shit?

Sorry no. Not for that amount of money. Clean it yourself

What? If there’s cat sick clean it up. That’s my point. If you’re a cleaner, clean it. If it’s your house, clean it. Whoever sees it first is the lucky one.
