I recently was chatting to my neighbour. She told me that she’s been off work as she’s been having seizures and that she still has been having them recently. Bit worried as I have drove past her today and she’s been out in the car. Thought that wouldn’t be possible with having recent seizures. Just a bit worried about her and others safety?

i would guess she shouldn’t be driving but I would ask her first.

i would guess she shouldn’t be driving but I would ask her first.

If she’s had a single seizure within the last year she’s not legally allowed to drive.

Yes OP I would report it to DVLA she’s endangering lives.

youalright · 21/02/2026 23:16

Yanbu Normally I'd say mind your own business but thats actually really dangerous. She would of been told by drs not to drive and its up to her to notify the dvla which she clearly hasn't.

ThePerfectWeekender · 21/02/2026 23:19

I'm usually the first to say MYOB, but this and drink driving I would report. How would you feel if she had an accident and harmed someone, or herself for that matter?

OriginalSkang · 21/02/2026 23:19

Its definitely not a case of her misusing the word? When its really coughing fits or panic attacks or something else?

Abd80 · 21/02/2026 23:44

Yes I would report. She shouldn’t be on the road. What if she causes an accident and kills herself and /or others aswell ?

WeAreNotOk · 21/02/2026 23:44

Next time you see her driving, can you secretly film her on your phone? Then when you get a chance to speak to her again, ask her about her seizures and if she's aware that she shouldn't be driving. She should report to DVLA, she doesn't have to wait for their response. She is required to stop driving immediately. If you see her driving again, have no hesitation in reporting her to the Police. She could be making the whole thing up though, to claim benefits, just a thought.

Quine0nline · 22/02/2026 08:00

Absolutely report. Without knowing medical history it's difficult, but if she mentioned them to a GP, they will have told not to drive.

However from experience if the DVLA are informed they will usually ask the GP for a report. They will get a medical for her. They will, depending asking or tell her not to drive. They may ask her to send in her driving license. She may ignore them. She may or may not send in her license. Unfortunately unless she is in a situation where she is caught she can get away with still driving.

CloakedInGucci · 22/02/2026 08:08

I would absolutely report this.

LancashireButterPie · 22/02/2026 08:20

I think you need a bit more clarity before reporting. I've heard patients use the term seizures when they talk about intense pain from a knee condition or of having panic attack "seizures".
Just ask her, "should you be driving if you are having seizures", see what she answers.

WeepingAngelInTheTardis · 22/02/2026 08:22

Some people say seizures when they mean panic attacks or pain, no idea why but they do. If its proper seizures then yes 100 % you need to report them immediately before they kill themselves driving or worse, someone else.

financialcareerstuff · 22/02/2026 08:58

Talk to her. A lot of people vastly exaggerate illnesses to get attention. Or she may simply not know.

Designless · 22/02/2026 09:02

I know someone badly hurt when a guy mounted the pavement while driving in a city centre knowing he had seizures. She almost died and is permanently disabled.

When he was interviewed by the police he kept demanding they prosecute the bystanders who dragged him from the car for assault...

Everyone who does this is a selfish genuine c word and they deserve to be shunned by society.

RosieLeigh195 · 22/02/2026 09:35

Thanks. Sorry I missed it out in my first post, she said a mini stroke and actual seizures and that she isn’t able to work at the moment as the seizures were still happening. I think she is even going out in the car at night

Grass that bitch up. Sadly ofc she's a drop in the ocean. People who won't stop driving when they know they're dangerous are scum.

JustAnotherWhinger · 22/02/2026 16:44

I would. This is where it’s tricky that GP’s and specialists can’t report directly to the DVLA.

You only have to look at the Glasgow bin lorry crash to see how dangerous it is when people ignore medical advice not to drive.

Yikes. My husband had a stroke and had to wait months for clearance to drive. He had a mini stroke the following year and forbidden to drive for 28 days again then assessment before allowed to drive again, only once consultant signed it off. Its strict and should be.

JustAnotherWhinger · 22/02/2026 16:44

I would report her.

it’s a pain when you can’t drive for medical reasons - my Dd has never been able to drive because of narcolepsy - but driving isn’t a right.

I actually believe that they can report directly in some cases.

Report her to the DVLA - it's a pain not being able to drive, but the words I use to describe someone who's had seizures and keeps driving are to rude for mumsnet!

Shockingly selfish.

Not being able to drive is a pain (DH can’t drive due to medical reasons) but that’s no excuse. She’s putting her own convenience over other people’s safety. It wouldn’t cross my mind to not report her tbh.

JaneGrint · 23/02/2026 18:32

Yes report.

She definitely shouldn’t be driving if she’s had seizures recently.

I’m sure it’s very inconvenient for your neighbour, but there’s a very real risk that she could cause a fatal accident if she has a seizure behind the wheel.

FWIW one of my neighbours had some seizures a few years ago, she reported this to the DVLA at the time, and she’s still not got her license back despite now being seizure free for over a year. She’s been trying to apply to get the license back and the DVLA are (quite rightly) demanding a lot of supporting medical information.

Ohyeahitsme · 23/02/2026 18:52

I wouldn't even hesitate to report this. It's so, so dangerous.

I've had severe episodes of vertigo and I'm.not allowed to drive when I have them (sometimes for weeks at a time). It's an absolute pain in the neck because I can't get the kids to school or activities but if anyone episode caused me to crash I'd never forgive myself.

Yes report that! She's likely to have on her medical notes that she can't drive and the DVLA will chase those up
