Will councils etc rename streets etc named after Andrew MW, when he was a prince?

Firstly decide what to replace the name with? It's a pain of informing the Royal Mail who then pass on their database to various companies.

Plus if you are selling your home and live on a road named after AMW as a prince, nobody wants to know due to the address

Are there honestly that many? I can see it's unfortunate if you're trying to sell a property on Prince Andrew Avenue right now though.

'Prince Andrews Close' is worse

catownerofthenorth · 21/02/2026 20:57

Are there any? I’d be surprised

catownerofthenorth · 21/02/2026 20:59

Google suggests about 4. This is really not a big deal

SwedishEdith · 21/02/2026 20:59

There's a few if you put Prince Andrew into Google maps.

MoiraPlunkett · 21/02/2026 20:59

Just had a look on Royal Mail postcode finder - there are a few 'Prince Andrew' streets, courts, drives, roads and closes (possibly others I didn't think of looking up). Assuming they are named after AM-B rather than another Prince Andrew from history, I imagine it may well be an urgent item on the next council meeting agenda of the authorities concerned!

Plun · 21/02/2026 21:04

The only other Prince Andrew was AMW's paternal grandfather

Where my DS lives there’s a cluster of streets built in the 1960’s named after Queen Elizabeth’s children, but without the Royal titles. Shortly after Andrew was stripped of his titles the local council said it was going to poll residents of the street named after him to see if they wanted to keep the name or change it.

gototogo · 21/02/2026 21:05

They are not that common thankfully. As it took 200 years to change the name of roads named after slave traders I’m not holding my breath on changing road names. For smaller streets it’s easier as 2/3 residents voting can get it changed. This will be far harder for longer roads with businesses, HMO’s etc on them

Prince Andrew's Caught Court

Bravo!

Butteredtoast55 · 21/02/2026 21:13

Could they drop the Andrew and just be Prince Street etc?
Although given that people live on streets with all kinds of dodgy names perhaps they'll just stay the same.

I live in Leeds. We still have streets named after Jimmy Saville. Even a Social Services building we visited for an adoption meeting still had a suite named after him, I recall. I hated it.

Names of streets certainly don’t get changed quickly, sadly.

Renaming a suite isn’t too much trouble compared to a road.

There is an Isis Way I drive past on the way to work, I always do wonder what it is like trying to sell a property there!

I know, I didn’t understand that at all, especially in a Social Services building! It was just so inappropriate.

At least 'Savile' is a name also associated with other people, e.g. Savile Row was not named after Jimmy.

Ha ... you must live close to me as this is just down the road. I'm surprised some enterprising local armed with tippex and a sharpie hasn't yet changed it to 'Nonce Andrew's Close' and added 'quick, run' to it as well!

True enough.

Oblivionnnnn · 21/02/2026 22:46

The golf course near me has been renamed as it was formerly The Dukes after him.

Jamesblonde2 · 21/02/2026 23:02

There a Saville Close near me…..

Glaspeated · 21/02/2026 23:18

Glitter should be renamed “sparkle dust”.

Unless it was recently named, chances are it wasn't named after Jimmy. There are lots of distinguished Saviles.

(By 'recently' I mean in the latter half of the 20th century, obviously not post-Jimmy Savile's death!)

Which is probably safer than Prince Albert
