Holidays - What have you seen to make you go urghh!

Just come back from a one week cruise, unfortunately due to my job I can only travel during school holidays. Some of the things I saw made me go urghh:
-Woman changing her baby on a chair in a public area- no changing mat, baby room a few steps away. Never sat in that area during the rest of the cruise.
-People not washing their hands or using hand sanitizer before eating in the buffet
-Parents letting their little darlings run around the buffet and ship/put their feet on chairs/walk across chairs/sit on tables! Why?
-Letting children sit with a tablet on full volume
-Facetime conversations you can't help but overhear
-Constant bleeps and blings when people send/receive mobile messages especially when trying to listen to a guide.
-Seeing families sat together all looking at their mobiles.
I will say there were some lovely people on the cruise.

Had a lovely holiday but where has consideration for other travellers or people gone?

Please can I win this with the tale of the manky pants?

We often stay in a small villa. There is a single steep track down to it with a very tight shared turning circle (with a steep drop on one side!) next to a lovely one bedroom AirBNB cottage. So you drive down and then have to reverse up 30 odd yards to do a multi point turn to get back to the road.

In front of the cottage there’s a washing line on the turning circle. It’s a good sightline to use in the manoeuvres.

A couple rented the cottage and the man had clearly had quite an awful accident in his white y-fronts. Some failed attempt seems to have been made to clean them and they were hung on the line. For 10 fucking days! Literally flapping their explosive shittiness at our windscreen every time we used the car. Even stranger, the very nice couple would smile and wave at us from their garden chairs entirely nonplussed by the public display of cacky no-way-will-they-be-white-again pants.

My son was at peak disgusting boy humour age and my husband is a big child. Despite going to many lovely places, they still love the memory of screaming about whether the poo pants would touch the windscreen or whether we’d drive off the mountain.

Pool evacuated because a child had pooed in there. Staff came with a net to fish it out !

UnhappyHobbit · 21/02/2026 19:41

At one hotel, I saw someone holding their child above a bin and it was peeing all over it. I vowed to go adult only after that.

Auroraloves · 21/02/2026 19:47

At an all inclusive Greek hotel. There was a guy at the pool on his own every day ( who I don’t think was a hotel guest) using the facilities. He tried to take one of our beach mats so I would keep an eye on him.

one day he went into the pool shower middle of the day, stripped off naked bs proceeded to shower. The cubicle was set up so immediately approaching you couldn’t see inside but from the opposite side of the pool could see everything. I saw two women in their early twenties about to use the shower and was too far away to warn them. They were mortified when they saw him. This was a family resort and completely inappropriate.

SweatyGibbon · 21/02/2026 19:52

This is a daft one but I remember a hotel welcome meeting where a large family (I assume) turned up and were giggling insincerely at the rep's Dad jokes. When it came to splitting into groups, they had a friendly but lively debate about which places they were going. Thankfully it wasn't too loud, but was rather distracting seeing them debating in the background.

Theonlywayicanloveyou · 21/02/2026 19:54

A cruise is not my personal choice of holiday. I think maybe you might prefer something else too.

Raera · 21/02/2026 19:56

Lovely romantic meal at an outdoor restaurant in Rome.
I felt something furry brush against my foot under the table, looked down expecting to see a cat. No - massive rat!

Sounds like cruises that allow children in the school summer holidays are not the best bet for you! Try a nice quiet villa next time then you'll have all the peace you want.

I do agree with you pretty much though especially with the ipads and electronics on full volume - drives me mad when they're on in public, especially restaurants.

As said in post I can only travel at certain times of the year. Most people are great, it's the ones that spoil it for the rest.

You have no way of knowing whether people have washed their hands before coming to the buffet.

My husband and I quite often look at our phones whilst sitting together. We've been sitting together for the best part of 28 years. We used to read different bits of the paper whilst sitting together. Now we browse our phones. We chat when we feel the urge.

pinotnow · 21/02/2026 20:20

Seeing families sat together all looking at their mobiles.

Do you follow them around for hours and know how long they are doing this for? Because when I travel with my dc we quite often look at our phones in restaurants while waiting for food as we've been on the go all day and are tired. Plus we are often looking up what to do the next day/booking attractions etc. We can all agree that phone addiction is an issue but all this policing of people's behaviour based on a snapshot is really annoying.

Clearinguptheclutter · 21/02/2026 20:24

I saw a conveyor belt of very chavvy weddings at a chavvy hotel in the Bahamas. They were getting married in a pagoda in the middle of a pool and getting splashed at by chavvy American kids. And a woman with a clipboard and headset shouting “next!” after each one.

Lararoft · 21/02/2026 21:41

@HarbourClankCatI would have removed the man’s shit stained underpants from the washing line in the night and binned them!! The ‘nice’ couple would be forever wondering what had happened & may guess but could never ask haha…

Thepossibility · 21/02/2026 22:22

A lady shaving her legs in the pool was up there for me.

Cruise ships spoiling my view.

Not joking either, they’re ugly and mega polluting, and bring little revenue into ports, other than the fees they pay to dock.

So if an average cruise ship contains 3500 people, and there are often several in port at any given time, the 7-10 thousand passengers then buying lunch, drinks, taxis etc don’t bring any revenue in the area?

Shadeflower · 22/02/2026 08:38

I can only have holidays out of term time too, but I don't go to places designed for families, which seems a simple solutions to your troubles. I agree with PP, it's probably best you go somewhere without people, a cruise seems a very odd choice for someone who finds others so disgusting.

Benidorm…

I'll raise you Marmaris.
There was a multi generational, extended family. Girl of about 15/16 (she was still in school), she points at one of the waiters and says 'that's who I was with last night', Nan replies 'oh, I was with him two nights ago'. Nan, Mum, Aunty, Granddaughters, Neices etc all shagging the same men. They all had 'sexy' dance offs. We got on a boat first, didn't see them, couldn't escape.
I must have touched lucky in Benidorm, I didn't see any bad behaviour.

In Egypt and Morocco, Russian and German tourists make any 'Brits abroad ' look well behaved. The Germans would literally shove you out of the queue at the bar, or if there was one table in the restaurant etc. I met nice Germans in Fuengirola, so it might not be all of them.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 22/02/2026 08:50

@Ponoka7 yep turkey is becoming the hotter Benidorm I fear…

and 100% agree about the Russians in Egypt we encountered years ago. Rude pigs.

BogRollBOGOF · 22/02/2026 08:52

Thong bikini bottoms, at a waterpark... when you're stood on a lower step in the queue and it looks like she's wearing nothing at face level each time you look ahead to see what the queue is doing.

Surely the waterslides would end up chaffing your bare butt anyway.

JacknDiane · 22/02/2026 09:17

Im sorry, but i win this one.

We stayed a night in a hotel in Aberdeen and I was looking forward to the pool and spa area
Unfortunately when we got there it was full and there was a queue. I went up to look through the big window at it to see the size of the pool area and there was a toddler in and out of the jacuzzi in a fucking nappy!!

We decided not to wait..

KimberleyClark · 22/02/2026 09:26

There’s a reason I prefer adults only cruises! Never seen anything yucky on them. As for cruises not bringing revenue into ports, they use local coach, guides and restaurants for excursions, take on supplies from local suppliers etc. It’s ridiculous to suggest they don’t bring revenue into ports. And not all cruise ships are huge ugly apartment block types either.

One thing I did see, in Crete, a girl wearing thong bikini bottoms and a backpack. She looked naked from the waist down.

benten54 · 22/02/2026 09:33

Given Cruises are basically Pontins on sea I wouldn’t have expected anything else.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/02/2026 09:55

A French man covering each nostril in turn and honking into the pool i was in.Fucking disgusting.

I'm not a babe and I like being around people who are not either entitled, self absorbed or obnoxious. It's just show some consideration for others.

Is this Kate from Benidorm?
