To think taking photos of food is pointless and annoying

I have friends who do this, take a video of a load of food at a restaurant or cafe and upload it. Whhhhy.

Yes, I find this bizarre.

DestinedToBeOutlived · 21/02/2026 19:14

Not something I do, but I find it helpful when going to new places to eat, I'll have a quick search and tonnes of photos come up.

Morepositivemum · 21/02/2026 19:16

Because they think it’s interesting and it is to them, no less so than other people’s dogs/ cats/ kids! I have friends who do this and chat about whether they’ve had it before etc, I’m not into it myself but there’s generally a bit of a conversation around it

DeQuin · 21/02/2026 19:17

Or they are logging food into an app and just using the "photo of my food" thing because it's more socially acceptable than "oh let me just add my food to my food diary?" It's actually a decent way to track.

DysmalRadius · 21/02/2026 19:18

When we eat out, I will often check out other tables' food to see what looks food/portion size/presentation etc to help me choose.

So, from that perspective, I see taking and posting pictures as a public service from people who do it to people like me. 😊

toastofthetown · 21/02/2026 19:21

Because they want to. I have lots of pictures of food saved to my phone and the point is it makes me happy to look at them. I never want to forget about the rhubarb, pistachio and tonka flan I had last week.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 21/02/2026 19:21

Sometimes it's just really good and I want to remember it. Like the dinosaur afternoon tea at the Ampersand hotel...

NormasArse · 21/02/2026 19:22

How does this affect you though?

I haven’t heard of this but wouldn’t you just put it straight into the app, not your instagram story or whatever?

It doesn’t, I know! And I wouldn’t dream of saying a word, but my friends instagram is pure food. She’s tiny as well!

RightOnTheEdge · 21/02/2026 19:25

What do you posted on your story OP that's so worthy and interesting?

waterbobble · 21/02/2026 19:28

I like it when i’m reading reviews of a new restaurant particularly if I’m unsure what to order but that’s it.

DilkushaKitchen · 21/02/2026 19:32

I have got a food specific Instagram account separate from my personal one, I use it to follow chefs and other people who make nice food, it's really good for recipe ideas or restaurant recommendations. I only post food pics on there, so people not interested in that kind of thing don't need to follow it. I like a reminder of where I've been or things I have cooked. If it's not for you, just scroll on by!

caljohn · 21/02/2026 19:32

I think posting a bitchy thread about your friend is worse than her taking a picture of her food and posting it, by an absolute mile.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 21/02/2026 19:36

I suppose it depends if it's noteworthy or not. I can see why someone would take a photo of a special dinner, or a fancy cocktail. Not sure why they would take a photo of an ordinary latte or something though.

TheChosenTwo · 21/02/2026 19:36

Haha my sil does this every time we go out to eat, “oh let me just take a photo of my ham and cheese panini and sent it to Tim!” And I think, “Tim has the house to himself and is sat in his pants scratching his nuts eating ravioli out the tin while gaming, I don’t think he’s going to be interested 😂
But it makes her happy and doesn’t affect my own enjoyment of my food so no harm done. She also doesn’t post it on social media as far as I can tell!

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/02/2026 19:44

Someone I know used to post photos of his holiday food but stopped. His friends begged him to start again because it was always interesting.

Rainbowdottie · 21/02/2026 19:48

I don’t do it personally but equally I have no issue with it. I’m sure it could be said of anyone posting stuff to their own social media. I’ve no interest in someone “clinking” glasses, or posting a changing room mirror fashion pic…but it’s their social media to post what they want? I guess the answer is if it bothers you so much, just unfollow them.

21ZIGGY · 21/02/2026 19:49

I see you've conceded that this doesn't affect you in any way but some people are just really into food, so maybe she just enjoys keeping a record of where she's been, and what she's eating.

UnhappyHobbit · 21/02/2026 19:50

I have started to do this more because I want to remember what I’ve had. I don’t post it, but it’s nice to catalogue a nice meal or fancy presentation.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/02/2026 19:51

I suppose you can show the photos/videos to some boiled potatoes that have disintegrated and give them a stern warning that they need to 'buck their ideas up' otherwise it won't just be boiling water next time -. it will be boiling OIL! 😱

DoubleFunMum · 21/02/2026 20:01

So don't do it then. No one's forcing you to partake. You do you! And leave other people to live their lives.

1000StrawberryLollies · 21/02/2026 20:05

It's no more pointless than taking photos of many other things. I'm sure lots of people would be more interested in a picture of someone's lovely restaurant dish than their dog or their children!

AwayInTheWind · 21/02/2026 20:06

I love people’s food pictures! I love getting inspiration and seeing the different kinds of meals people eat.

Barrellturn · 21/02/2026 20:07

I don't really understand social media at all. I have a colleague who put a photo of her desk on Instagram with lots of '9to5' type hashtags. Presumably this was to tell her followers she has a job and is at work.
What seems to have bypassed people is that no one else cares about your life.
