To think taking photos of food is pointless and annoying

I have friends who do this, take a video of a load of food at a restaurant or cafe and upload it. Whhhhy.

I don't really understand social media at all. I have a colleague who put a photo of her desk on Instagram with lots of '9to5' type hashtags. Presumably this was to tell her followers she has a job and is at work.
What seems to have bypassed people is that no one else cares about your life.

This isn't really true though is it? Plenty of people care about the lives of their friends and family, especially if they follow them on social media. It would be a pretty miserable world if nobody cared about anyone else's life.

This is one of the main reasons I came off social media. I do not give a shit what you ate and I give even less of a fuck about what you did at the gym/on your run. Bore off.

I think posting a bitchy thread about your friend is worse than her taking a picture of her food and posting it, by an absolute mile.

It honestly wasn’t meant bitchily (I feel bad now!) She’s gorgeous and if I looked like her I’d post pictures of ME. As it is I see a lot of meat and chips!

I take one pic and send it to my kids. I don’t post on social media unless it’s something extraordinary (like the huge hand held waffle wrap with ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate sauce and sprinkles we got at a food market - impressive to look at and eat)!

Do they? I can't say I would care at all whether I see a photo of a friend's desk or not.

If you find it pointless....don't do it. If you find it annoying....well I'm glad that's something you've time to worry about! Unless someone you're dining with spends the whole meal doing it then how does it impact you?

(I take photos of meals I have sometimes if I want to remember what I got and where and sometimes look though the images and think "oh that would be nice today". I upload as it's easy to then share and say to someone "how about this?")

Because I send photos to my friends and they do to me. Because we are interested and care about each other and don't moan on mumsnet when we send delicious food pictures to each other

The fact that she has followers would suggest that people do care about her life though. That's the point of following someone.

I used to be guilty of this and then one day I realised how attention seeking and desperate it was. It was entirely to post on social media about what fancy restaurants I’d been to, in order to impress people I barely know, who don’t give a fuck. I had a similar damascene moment regarding social media in general and stopped posting / looking. I don’t miss it at all.

Tahio · 22/02/2026 11:05

I love looking at food pics tbh, pretty much my whole instagram feed is just random people taking pictures of their meals whether homemade or in a restaurant

redskyAtNigh · 22/02/2026 11:05

We (DH, I, 2 adult DC) post food pictures regularly to our family chat. Not just from restaurants, but also things we've cooked ourselves. We use it as a family bonding thing we are pretty dull and don't have too many topics of conversation

It doesn’t, I know! And I wouldn’t dream of saying a word, but my friends instagram is pure food. She’s tiny as well!

You can enjoy nice food and be tiny...

It's people stuffing their face with junk who are not "tiny", most foodies I know are very slim

there wouldn't be any followers if people didn't care? is it what stings? That people are interested by her?

Everything can be "pointless and annoying", just... ignore?
As long as people don't whatsapp you 200 photos and don't take photos while you are eating, what's the problem?

JaneGrint · 22/02/2026 11:12

I do often take pictures of my food, but that’s mostly for myself. I might show them to someone if we’re talking about the particular restaurant I was in or food in general.

But I don’t usually bother posting pictures of my food on social media.
