Am I going to fail probation

Greenraintoday · 21/02/2026 07:16

I'm getting worried, half way through probation, have had 3 unavoidable bouts of sickness ( all different cases and not disability related) been late in to work 4 times and have been reminded to answer emails that I forgot several times

In my defense I have had alot going.on in personal life and this has impacted me

AIBU to think I should be given another chance ?

How long is your probation? For example how many bouts of sickness in what period of time? What were the expectations of the probation period when you started?
In the nicest possible way, 4 lates and 3 bouts of sickness isn’t great… it’s more than I’ve had in my job in the last 10 yrs!

Pricelessadvice · 21/02/2026 07:19

Lots of people have things going on in their personal life.

If you can’t even make the effort for your probationary period, when you know you are being monitored, god knows what you’ll be like as a full employee.

I’d let you go. Sorry OP.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 21/02/2026 07:20

I’m sorry but that did not sound good. Do you have probation objectives? How are you performing against them

Yuja · 21/02/2026 07:21

Over what time period? It doesn’t look great but maybe you have an understanding employer

WellErrr · 21/02/2026 07:22

To be totally honest and because you asked….

4 lates
3 absences
Poor performance (not answering emails etc)

I would not keep you on.

Ca2026 · 21/02/2026 07:22

Sorry, the sickness I might be willing to extend probation and hope for everyone that you have just been very unlucky but the lateness and forgetting to answer emails would seal the failure of probation for me.

I have temp working for me at the moment. I’ve loved working with her as a person and after the first couple of weeks I was going to encourage her to apply for the perm role but unfortunately now 2.5 months in, she’s been late multiple times, slept in and asked for the day off and been a couple of tasks I’ve given her shes forgotten about until I’ve followed them up. This has lead to me pushing external recruitment.

This.
Unless you have disclosed to them something significant going on in your life that is impacting your work then I think they will just consider you flakey and unreliable. Even if you have told them, as you are in probation then they may be likely to see you as a risk anyway and not commited to the job so get rid of you regardless.

Unless there a drip feed coming that you're the only person with the skill set to do your job id say the question is more is there any reason you would be kept on

Replying to emails is the most basic requirement I'd expect

QuickBlueKoala · 21/02/2026 07:24

How long is your probation period? 6 months - still a lot, but potentially ok if you are otherwise excellent.
If less, its an issue. Not so much the sickness (again how long/when? regular friday sickness is an issue), but being late regularly and forgetting stuff isn’t good.

Catza · 21/02/2026 07:24

Sickness may have been unavoidable but lateness and failing to keep up on top of the workload isn't. Personal matters don't prevent you from showing up for work on time.

Newmum2610 · 21/02/2026 07:24

The sickness alone wouldn’t be enough to fail
probation if you were otherwise really good at the job. But being reminded several times to answers emails suggest you are not good at the job AND have taken more sick days that most people would in a year.

I would look for another job

Glaspeated · 21/02/2026 07:24

It’s definitely likely.

I’d be looking for something else before the inevitable happens.

SleekWhisky · 21/02/2026 07:25

Not sure what line of work you’re in but this isn’t looking good. During your one to ones it would be beneficial for you to ask “Hypothetically if this was my probation review meeting, would you see any reason for me to fail?”
This is giving them an opportunity to tell you how you could improve, which you already know, but it might help reduce your anxiety. You will know once you ask this question and you have every right to ask if. For people who are nervous about such situations I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t ask this question half way through their probation period.

somanychristmaslights · 21/02/2026 07:26

Not answering emails is such a basic task. I could get over the sickness, but the emails and the lateness show you’re unreliable. I wouldn’t keep you on, sorry. I think for the best chance you can, you need to be the most amazing, efficient staff member you can be for the remaining of your probation to prove you’re good.

Gettoachiro · 21/02/2026 07:26

It would be a cheerio from me unfortunately due to the lateness and none responded emails.

Sickness happens.

Goatsarebest · 21/02/2026 07:29

Would you employ someone who was later 4 times during their probation and didnt answer emails you sent them.

Willowy2 · 21/02/2026 07:29

I'm a manager and sorry I wouldn't be keeping you on. Most people make the most effort during probation not the least . The sickness maybe can't be helped so I'd be willing to extend probation if your performance was high inbetween but lateness and slacking with emails etc, absolutely not. Sorry, it would piss me off and I'd be getting rid.

LIZS · 21/02/2026 07:29

Over one/three months, yes you may well fail, six months possibly. Sickness is unfortunate, punctuality and not being on top of emails a definite issue. Were you already warned about attendance?.Best bet is to admit your weaknesses in the review, tell them changes you have put in place to avoid recurrence and request an extension if needs be. Excuses won’t help. Even if you “pass” you could be let go

FOJN · 21/02/2026 07:32

You are half way through your probation period you still have time to change things. Employers will only make allowances for a period of sub par performance due to personal reasons if you have a history of doing a good job up to that point. You are relatively unknown to them and they will no doubt be worried that if this is how things are during your probationary period that you will become even more unreliable if they make your contract permanent.

Even if they were prepared to treat the sickness as unfortunate and the emails as typical mistakes for someone new in post it's difficult to make excuses for the lateness. The fact that you can't organise yourself to get to work on time suggests you don't really take your job seriously.

If you fail your probation you need to treat it as a wake up call or your future employment will go the same way.

YABU to think that your behaviour is acceptable.

You're meant to be on your best behaviour. If all this is 3 months in, why would your employer want to retain you?

Zanatdy · 21/02/2026 07:38

They probably will fail your probation yes, as what happens in probation is an indicator of what will happen long term.

TY78910 · 21/02/2026 07:40

It depends. They could extend it, they could fail it. In fact, persistent lateness and sickness is usually the easiest way of ending someone’s probation if there are no performance concerns outside of that. It really depends on your manager and how you show up outside of your time off.

firstofallimadelight · 21/02/2026 07:46

I had a job with a 6 month probation, I had 2 periods of sick leave due to migraines and then had a mental health breakdown (ironically due to the job) 3 weeks before my probation was up. I was sacked 7 days before the end of my probation. (Whilst still on sick leave)

They did me a favour as my mh had declined since starting the hugely stressful role but at the time it felt harsh.

Sartre · 21/02/2026 07:48

I think most could look past the sickness but the lates and forgotten emails nope.
