I am in total shock!

My son rang me for a chat earlier and said he was sorry he couldn't stay on the phone for long as they had friends coming over for dinner and he hadn't hoovered the stairs yet!
He has grown up, and has a lovely partner. I must have done a reasonable job after all.
How did you know when yours had really changed into adults?

Oh it's nice to read a post where the shock is a nice one!
(I wish I could contribute, but mines only 7!)

Wavingnotdowning · 20/02/2026 22:36

He wasn't the easiest teen, putting it mildly, so it might give hope to others xx

My ds lives in a Uni house share and I'm amazed at how he is the organised one of the group. He also loves to batch cook healthy food.
If he's not there and it's bin day he will message everyone to remind them to put the bin out 🤣🤣🤣.
Shame that version of him disappears when he comes home in the holidays

MarxistMags · 20/02/2026 22:45

My friend was visiting and my son asked if we wanted a cup of coffee.
He was about 17 at the time. Normally he would have gone to his room !
I must admit I was taken aback at first .

gototogo · 20/02/2026 22:47

What a lovely shock! Still waiting on my dd growing up, 27, married but anything sensible, not so much. Seems to manage to do laundry at least now

Flukingflukes · 20/02/2026 22:50

My DS told me this evening that as part of his job, he absolutely loves being on the stage speaking at conferences on HE. How did I manage to produce such a charismatic, confident individual? Speaking in front of people like that is a terrifying thought for me.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 20/02/2026 22:53

It's amazing how much they can change when they move in with a partner. My eldest was always ok with household chores but eating veg or salad was an alien concept (except peas, sweetcorn and cucumber) so I was gobsmacked when we went round the first time for a meal and he proceeded to eat cabbage, swede and cauliflower cheese.

Wavingnotdowning · 20/02/2026 22:55

Yes, and he asked for my Chilli Con Carne recipe 😁

You deserve to be proud OP. I’m waiting for such highlights from my two, although think we’re slowly improving.

Fingalscave · 20/02/2026 22:57

We were chatting to our son and he was telling me about a friend of his who is struggling with family problems. He suddenly said "I sometimes forget that not everyone has what I've had, amazing parents who encourage me in everything and gave me a fantastic childhood".
It was such a lovely thing to say but I can't imagine him saying anything like that when he was younger. I felt like he had grown up.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 20/02/2026 23:02

DS went off to uni last year. 2 weeks in, he said he was going to come hone for the night. We were in the area, so I suggested we could pick him up. "Actually I've just put a load of washing on, so ill come later" (!!) "Ok, do you want dinner?" "Let me check when my salmon goes out of date...no, I need to eat my salmon today ".....

Theonlywayicanloveyou · 20/02/2026 23:05

Lovely! What a nice post to stumble across. X

I think that would have made me cry

HE? Home economics? Health Education? Please enlighten me.

We went to stay with my 21DS in his new flat a few years ago, he chastised me & his dad for leaving coffee mugs on the side and not putting them in the dishwasher 😳....I honestly nearly peed my pants in shocked..."where is my messy son and what have you done with him?" But I was secretly quite proud 😁

Fingalscave · 20/02/2026 23:09

@Theonlywayicanloveyou oh yes I had a tear in my eye for sure!

Wavingnotdowning · 20/02/2026 23:09

Yes, and when we went to stay, he brought out coasters for our glasses, my husband was gobsmacked!

I'd be so chuffed at something like this too OP!

Not the same as mine is only 7 but this morning when his sister was having a meltdown before nursery (and wanted nothing to do with me), he went to sit next to her. He didn't say anything at first but stroked her head until she calmed down a bit, occasionally pressing on her nose to make her laugh.

Eventually she went in for a cuddle and he asked her what was wrong. She said she wanted to wear her sparkly tights but couldn't find them. So he said "don't worry, I can help you" and went to search for them with her 💕

ETA: sorry just re-read the OP! I thought the thread was about when your kids have shocked you in a good way, but just saw you asked about when they became adults. Apologies for the non-applicable post!

HE - Health Education? Home Economics?

Should I know what that stands for? (I have to look up so many acronyms on MN!) (Mumsnet)

HE higher education

beasmithwentworth · 20/02/2026 23:44

DD had 4 years of depression/ self harm/ attempts on her life and barely left her bedroom. No A levels or university like her friends as she couldn’t deal with an educational setting. She found herself a bar job and has been offered a promotion after being there for 5 months. The thing that has amazed me is her comfortableness and work ethic without the pressure of school. She leaves at 7 on the dot every morning and stays late often. She offers to pay for things now she’s financially independent and is kind and empathetic I’m so proud and happy at how far she’s come.
