Well post menopause here, vaginal oestrogen and still get up at least once most nights. I can sometimes sleep through, but only rarely. I have a downstairs bathroom so can't put it off for too long if I decide I need to go!

I have audio books running to help me with night time wakings. Recommend non-fiction or anything read by Stephen Fry.

Isn’t putting on an audio book an absolute guarantee your mind wakes up more and you stay awake longer? I don’t think I really regain full consciousness getting up in the night. I definitely would if I had to see to put an audio book on, ne er mind the book itself engaging my brain.

That's why I listen to non fiction. If I do listen to fiction then it's either books I've already read (so no surprises) or children's fiction with very low stakes (school stories or similar). Stops my brain from latching onto a thought when I wake and fretting for hours over whether or not I paid the milkman. Works for me!

I always pee at least twice a night and I’m 33. Always have, constantly tired but it’s my normal. Do other people actually get to sleep the entire night through??

TheMorgenmuffel · 20/02/2026 16:07

More than twice.
Often at 4am sitting on the loo for the umpteenth time I fantasise about sticking a cork in it.

I’m a mouth breather and I’ve recently started mouth taping at night. This has stopped my mouth drying out like it used to but I still feel thirsty when I wake up to pee and I have to sip water through a straw from the corner of my mouth.

I really miss the days of crashing out in any bed and sleeping until morning. Now I need my special pillow, more pillows between my knees and behind my back, podcasts playing all night, mouth tape, water next to the bed and several nocturnal wees. Imagine going home with a fella you’ve just met and doing all that, it’s a good job I’m happily married (and we have separate beds 😂).

This made me smile in recognition, especially the collection of special pillows!

My mum was told to drink more - counter intuitive but it stops the body hanging on to liquid apparently. This hung on to liquid gets dumped into the kidneys when you lie down to sleep and makes you keep getting up. I’m younger than you (61) but it works for me.

I’ll experiment and let you know how it goes! I do have some water during the evening but not much
Ive got kidney stones so have to keep a good level of hydration anyway.

Sorry to hear so many of you are similar to myself. Thinking about it im actually up no more than twice to pee. But the loo is downstairs through the back and its a bit of a trek in the cold and dark and unfortunately it takes me ages to get back to sleep.
Im in vagifem, oxybutynin, mirabegron, jude tablets, decaf everything, no fizzy drinks, just sips of water in the evening...and I still get up (and need night time tena lady pads Blush)
Currently on the waiting lists for women's physio, bladder department and the incontinence team in my area...Confused

Im tired just thinking of it all.

1-2 times in the night is not unusual unfortunately, more than that I’d definitely seek medical advice as it can be indicative of something they can treat

Thechaseison71 · 20/02/2026 21:42

Yes most definitely.Cant have HRT either so no idea if that would help. Doesn't make me tired though.

cobrakaieaglefang · 20/02/2026 21:43

Yes..minimum twice..hate it..I have always struggled to go to sleep, but once asleep, used to stay asleep..not anymore. I have yo have music or films on to fall asleep too..my brain never and has never switched off at night. I can recall embarrassing moments from when I was 8, when I am in the dark without background noise.

cobrakaieaglefang · 20/02/2026 21:44

Oh..on hrt too..

RamblingFar · 20/02/2026 21:55

Pumpkin seed oil definitely helped me. However it decreased it from probably 5-6 times to 1-2, so may not help you.

BruachAbhann · 20/02/2026 21:58

I feel your pain. I'm the same but had a really rare congenital issue, which I only just discovered last year, called an uterocele which meant one kidney wasn't draining properly. Had to get surgery to fix uterocele and remove a large bladder stone which had formed. I had been getting up multiple times at night thinking it was normal and something everyone did.

Since surgery my bladder is overactive at the moment so I still am getting up at least once, but sometimes 3 or 4 times, but betmiga helps (it relaxes the bladder muscle) and can be taken long term so I've restarted that. I may have to get botox in my bladder if it doesn't resolve, which I find hilarious as it's the only situation for which I would ever consider botox.
My doc has also recommended vagifem which I will start now. Anyway, thought I'd add in my rare condition as I never see it talked about and it might be relevant to someone.

SparklyGlitterballs · 20/02/2026 21:58

It's a vicious circle for me. I wake up every couple of hours to change position as my joints ache (osteoarthritis). When I wake I can't stop thinking about going to the loo because I know if I don't go, I'll be awake again soon due to my weak bladder. So I get up and go whether my bladder is full or not. Never been on HRT. For those using the oestrogen pessaries, do they help just at nighttime? I suffer during the day too. I'll go for a wee a couple of times before I leave the house, but within half an hour or so of going out I'll be looking for a toilet. Makes me afraid to go out anywhere, unless it's somewhere I know has toilets.

BruachAbhann · 20/02/2026 22:00

Oh and drinking a lot during the day but stopping around 6/7 is good. Also, sparkling water is surprisingly very irritating for your bladder, as is alcohol and caffeine as others mentioned.

Silverbirchleaf · 20/02/2026 22:00

Yes, usually once, sometimes twice.

GentleSheep · 20/02/2026 22:06

I've always gone once a night since my early years but had a period of time when it was more like 3 times during my 60s. Back to once again now at 70. I just go straight back to sleep. However I will drink herbal tea till late so can't expect anything else! Am not on HRT.

ilovepixie · 20/02/2026 22:07

I get up about 5 times a night!

Holdinguphalfthesky · 20/02/2026 22:08

I go through phases of getting up, usually once, and always have, but when I started on HRT a year or so ago I was getting up 2-3 times a night and I was broken. It did settle down and went back to normal or even better (long time since I got up). I do the oestrogen gel every day and progesterone daily tablet.

FoxRedPuppy · 20/02/2026 22:09

I’ve been waking up twice to pee since my mid 30s, I’m mid 40s now.

MammaBear1 · 20/02/2026 22:15

Only twice? If only!

MrsCarson · 20/02/2026 22:30

I'm not on HRT anymore. Not for the last 4 years.
Until I started drinking more water and stopped drinking caffeine I was getting up at least twice a night to pee. Now I either don't get up at all or I get up once.
The dry mouth thing is terrible though. I swear I must be eating sand overnight my mouth is so dry. If I do get up I have a gulp of water in the bathroom.
