Man left his girlfriend to freeze to death

Trevordidit · 20/02/2026 02:13

Man left his girlfriend to freeze when she was struggling on a mountain hike.

He's been found guilty of manslaughter.

So many aspects of his account don't make sense - AIBU to wonder if he did it on purpose?

Domestic abuse has so.many incarnations

There's a guy in the US who's being prosecuted for forcing his kids on a dangerous hike. One of them nearly died

Oh my goodness

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 18/03/2026 08:23

What a psychopath. Those poor children. That little girl, aware of the danger and totally powerless.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 18/03/2026 08:23

I mean, just planning an outing like that with 3 small dc is negligent.

That's absolutely shocking. I hope he's locked up for a very long time. Those poor children 😔

guinnessguzzler · 18/03/2026 12:10

Wow, that is terrifying in the extreme. I wonder if these men are so truly lacking in empathy that it affects their understanding of how others are feeling or coping in the same situation? It's almost unbelievable that anyone would do that.

ILikeKeirStarmer · 18/03/2026 12:38

This does not surprise me in the slightest. DH is a good man and thinks of himself as such. Yet, he routinely walks off ahead leaving me and/or children behind. Once, I lay down on the pavement to make the point that I could have fallen and he wouldn't have known. We had many blazing rows when he left me behind struggling with young kids.

He got better but now they're older and I'm now the smallest, he and boy kids will now walk off ahead without me.

Uncaring, selfish, entitled and virtually unconscious behaviour.

Although he has never deliberately left me - imo, that's abuse.

That’s horrible. I feel angry on your behalf.

Actually, this has reminded me of something that happened many years ago when I was a teenager. We went on a comparatively short hill climb as a family on Christmas Day, when there was snow on the ground. For some reason, my DM was wearing the wrong footwear and kept slipping backwards. Instead of helping her, my F, along with my uncle (his brother) just laughed at her. They didn’t help her at all. Thankfully, another man on route stopped to help her.

My F was abusive in other ways, so I suppose, in reality, his behaviour wasn’t all that surprising.

Thank you, that's kind. It did get to the point where I was thinking of divorce, it ruined every family day out as he would just disappear over the horizon while I wrestled slow or struggling kids. Thankfully he did improve but he told me his mum used to lose him in shops as a child because he used to just walk off. And I used to say "he's vanished again" when I'd lose him in the supermarket as a 30yo before kids.

Could be a DH thing but could also be a man thing.

Yep, seems to me just another facet of uncaring male behaviour.

Re Thomas and Kerstin, I think the lack of preparation and correct mountain behaviour says murder to me. The lack of care for her wellbeing makes it at least manslaughter.

And another one - man tried to murder his wife on a hiking trail but she lived to tell the tale, along with witnesses to his attack https://abcnews.com/video/131415685/

Shrinkhole · 28/03/2026 11:01

Wow that’s horrific. I am beginning to wonder if women aren’t safer hiking alone to be honest. More danger of being attacked by the person you are with than a stranger and you can stick to your own limits and not be dragged along by a man. I hike alone (or with my dog) quite a lot and I do prefer it.

It is horrific, her injuries! Thank goodness there were women to help her.

Have happily hiked alone, despite people saying I shouldn't do it. My response to them was would you say that to a man? The answer was always no. I let people know where I was going, proper coordinates. I never felt scared.

It's very confusing and why did he not attempt to hail the rescue helicopter? And why actively avoid those search abd rescue phone calls?

The reports of them having had a heated argument beforehand and the fact she suddenly became unwell - I wonder if there was more actual intent on his part.

I don't think it was intent, but having seen many men stride off in a strop and not even look back (e.g. hiking etc), if they had an argument beforehand I can totally picture what could have happened...

I'd have thought it relevant. The OP said so many things don't make sense, and that's why people on the thread have looked at it from all angles. . . This possibility wasn't discussed because is a completely random thing you'd never imagine. If this kind of fraud was endemic in one place then it could be in another.

I don't really see any relevance at all as the situations are totally different.

Only if you think you know what happened. Most people don't.

But how does a scam involving forcing foreign tourists to pay for rescues that the guides induced relate to this situation?

Warmlight1 · 05/04/2026 09:21

Well firstly they weren't all forced seems some were willing and secondly apparently one of the alleged methods of forcing was guides poisoning people. Did you read the article?
