To be sad that DS has passed his driving test?

He passed at the end of last week, and I’ve barely seen him since. We spent SO many hours together over the last few months so he could practice in his car, we have some lovely talks when it’s just the 2 of us. It’s half term here so he’s off with his mates and his girlfriend, driving around, parking up somewhere like you do when you’re 17 and have literally not a care in the world!

AIBU to feel like this is the beginning of the end? Before you know it he’ll have finished his A levels, gotten a job and be moving out!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m so proud of him, and I remember what it was like to suddenly have this freedom, and a licence to go wherever you want, whenever you want. I don’t think my parents missed me this much, but maybe they did - I’ll have to ask them 😂

Also I’m now worried about him constantly. I have to stop myself tracking his location whenever he’s driving. I’m terrified he’s going to have an accident. I know he’s a very good driver, but also he’s just a normal kid, in a car with his mates, probably wanting to show off!! This might be the scariest parenting stage yet, and in a few years I’ll be doing it all over again with DS2!

Yes, mine passed just before Christmas and he goes to school the other side of town so we used to have an hour together just chatting morning and evening, and lots of time together the couple of months before his test practicing. I have missed him horribly the last half term now he drives himself but I love the 2+ hours a day I have gained back!

It is definitely the scariest stage but it gets easier quickly, even just two months in I don’t track him like I did when he first passed, I get alerts when he arrives or leaves somewhere but I don’t obsessively watch the life 360 any more.

He went on the motorway for a few junctions for the first time a couple of weeks ago, I left my phone downstairs and went to get ready rather than stressing as I knew when I came back he d be off it!

I remember whem my nephew passd his driving test and decided to buy a motor bike instead of a car

My dister was eo worried that she had a nose bleed whem it was delivered and she saw this size of it.

She got used to it and relaxed a bit larlter on

You reaction is perfectly normal
Make the most of him giving you lifts etc before he leaves the next .

I understand completely I was the same. Thankfully I think my sons miss the time too so they regularly ask me to go for a drive with them etc.
