I've just come out of a very stressful work situation and now have 2 weeks annual leave. I've spent a week of it already and I haven't been out of the house! I feel like I'm in hibernation mode. I live alone and am perfectly happy ,but wondering when I'm going to get cabin fever...
What's the longest you've stayed in for?

I do think that it makes a difference that my hobbies and interests are indoor ones - reading, knitting, crochet, embroidery, watching TV - and I have never been a particularly outdoorsy person, despite growing up in a tiny village, playing out on the hill or down by the stream from the age of about 9.

My disability has made my life so much smaller than it used to be, but having a range of things I do enjoy, and can do without going out, makes my life liveable for me.

I am going to get a wheelchair soon (I’ve been referred for one, just waiting to see if they will send me one), and it will be nice to be able to go to the shops or the library, even if I will have to be reliant on someone else pushing me.

Spent a week on maternity ward with ds and whilst I could go outside I didn't see the point, DH was visiting daily with anything I needed and I don't smoke so no need to just go and stand in the car park. DS was too poorly to go outside. Other than that in my actual house I think maybe 2/3 days post surgery and similar when I badly broke my foot. Never really by choice I go stir crazy.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/02/2026 18:07

I saw a meme on FB which said “Could you stay inside for a month in order to win £1,000,000” - with the reply - “I have done this - I didn’t realise there was funding available!” 😂

I could stay in indefinitely. I have been called lazy by many people, but I work full time and I like sleeping and doing nothing so as long as it doesn't impact on anyone, I figure why not? Obviously I clean, do washing, tidy, cook etc, but if I can do it without seeing people and going anywhere, it's perfect for me. I've been the same since I was a child.

This is literally me - high five @CharlotteSometimeslikesanafternoonnap- we seem to be an minority type

superchick · 18/02/2026 18:11

I've just been thinking about this. I'm currently battling the worst cold I've had in years (I cant remember the last time i had even a small sniffle) and I'm on day 3 of hibernation. I'm normally out loads at work and with the kids and rarely get to hunker down but ive been pinned to my sofa since Monday and its been strongly needed. But it feels weird/i feel guilty, like i should be out. I'd love to spend more time at home going forward (including the garden) so I've found it very therapeutic and its going to be a drag going out to work tomorrow.

WorkHardPlay · 18/02/2026 18:13

Whatever you do OP - don’t listen to those who tell you that it’s unhealthy/strange. Many of these posters have children/live with a partner, which of course changes things.

However, if home is your sanctuary, and you’re still being active at home/doing activities - then it’s totally fine!!!! The only concern is if you were going 4+ weeks without speaking to anyone, as that could have a knock on impact to your social skills/sense of isolation. But other than that, you do you! Totally fine to be spend long periods inside if you’re happy!

Geranium1984 · 18/02/2026 18:14

I spent two weeks fairly bed bound in hospital, didn't make it outside until I was discharged.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 18/02/2026 18:15

I think I was at home for about a week or slightly longer when I had Covid but I did sit in the garden. And I was in hospital for 5 or 6 days when I had DS but I think I may have popped outside for a walk around in that time.

I have a memory of the Jan/Feb 2021 lockdown and walking around the playing field over the road with the snow coming down, as I was determined to have my allowed time outside.

I suspect I was probably at home for at least a week with things like measles, chicken pox as a child, but I don’t remember.

Gosh that sounds really unhealthy. Even if I’m ill I’d try and get outside after a few days
. Unless it was flu and I couldn’t move from bed.

It isn’t unhealthy. It’s just not your personal preference.

I could easily stay at home for a couple of weeks. My house is nice and comfortable and peaceful and I have absolutely no problem amusing myself at home.

Christmasbird · 18/02/2026 18:20

Not even a day apart from a hospital stay when I gave birth 25 years ago. I would go absolutely insane

WilfredsPies · 18/02/2026 18:20

A little bit over two years is probably the longest single period. No balcony or garden, so properly inside.

LakieLady · 18/02/2026 18:21

Around 2 weeks when I tore a ligament in my knee and dislocated my kneecap. I was in plaster from arse to ankle and not allowed out of bed for a fortnight. I was absolutely stir crazy.

I didn't leave the house for 7-10 days when I had campylobacter. I couldn't risk being more than a few paces from the toilet!

EvilParsnip · 18/02/2026 18:22

About twenty-four hours. I get cabin fever very easily!

SpecialAgentMaggieBell · 18/02/2026 18:23

Longest is probably about 10 days. I haven't left the house since last Wednesday, so 8 days so far. I WFH, the kids have been taking the dog out and I get my shopping delivered. Weather is crap so...

Endofyear · 18/02/2026 18:25

Maybe a couple of days at most when ill. I really feel the need to walk, even if the weather is shite. Haven't been out today as its been raining heavily and I'm feeling a bit of a cold coming on, stuffy and scratchy throat! Will have to go out tomorrow though or I really will get cabin fever!

slaintebab · 18/02/2026 18:25

About a month, it was during uni and I suffered a bit of a mental breakdown and wouldn’t go outside.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 18/02/2026 18:26

For the last twenty odd years I've had dogs, so probably about two hours... sigh.

Merelyancient · 18/02/2026 18:26

Also when I had hyperemesis. I can't remember how long exactly as it's a blur, but weeks and weeks. I remember when I started feeling better going on a practise walk to the shop 10 minutes up the road as I hadn't been out in so long I'd become agoraphobic. I went out more in covid times than I did in early pregnancy!

Thepeopleversuswork · 18/02/2026 18:27

Hmmm… Fine every now and then, everyone likes to slob out sometimes but there’s loads of evidence of the health benefits of fresh air and exercise. I have to say I don’t think its healthy to not want to go outdoors. It often goes hand in hand with agoraphobia and anxiety.

TragicMuse · 18/02/2026 18:30

7 weeks. During covid. I didn’t even go into the garden.

I was not in the best of mental health. But at the time I was fine not to go out.

Beachtastic · 18/02/2026 18:36

Sitonyourdressmavis · 18/02/2026 16:57

No. You know what? It feels really healthy. I'm pottering etc not just lying there

Enjoy it, OP. You've spent a long time wishing you could be at home. Now you are, and you can count your blessings. It won't be for ever.

I don’t agree, and neither does the science or research. If OP is staying at home because they enjoy it (not because of fear or anxiety) then it’s totally healthy.

It’s very strange that you associate being at home with ‘slobbing out’ - People can be incredibly active and exercise at home. Fresh air can be gained in a garden or reading with the windows open.

It’s a real western/ableist perspective you have. It’s strange how middle class people in the UK would consider their neighbour a ‘slob’ for not going out … but consider a Buddhist silent retreat for months or more, to be an excellent journey for ‘finding yourself’ 😂

TakeTheCuntingQuichePatricia · 18/02/2026 18:43

2 years give or take. I might have gone out to the garden, but can't remember.

dizzydizzydizzy · 18/02/2026 18:47

About 2 weeks when I had Covid.

PurpleLovecats · 18/02/2026 18:48

I’ve not left my house since early January.
