I've just come out of a very stressful work situation and now have 2 weeks annual leave. I've spent a week of it already and I haven't been out of the house! I feel like I'm in hibernation mode. I live alone and am perfectly happy ,but wondering when I'm going to get cabin fever...
What's the longest you've stayed in for?

I’m recently home from a 17 day hospital stay. Was horrible, couldn’t even open a window. That’s my longest ever!

CharlotteSometimeslikesanafternoonnap · 18/02/2026 17:12

I could stay in indefinitely. I have been called lazy by many people, but I work full time and I like sleeping and doing nothing so as long as it doesn't impact on anyone, I figure why not? Obviously I clean, do washing, tidy, cook etc, but if I can do it without seeing people and going anywhere, it's perfect for me. I've been the same since I was a child.

User253853 · 18/02/2026 17:14

I had surgery a month ago and I've been at home since then. In fact it's nearly five weeks since Ive been anywhere. I actually went outside on saturday when the sun was out but generally the weather has been horrible so not exactly pottering around in the garden weather and for the first three weeks I was in bed anyway.

Sitonyourdressmavis · 18/02/2026 16:57

No. You know what? It feels really healthy. I'm pottering etc not just lying there

It's healthy. Not everyone needs to shove themselves outdoors for sake of another person's idea of wellness.

I didn't leave my house for around 4 weeks after having each DC. It was a dream. I had the best time with them, and was fortunate to have DH take care of DC1s school runs and events after I had DC2.

After a disgusting work situation, I would have stayed indoors for ages if not for DC. Home is my sanctuary.

CloakedInGucci · 18/02/2026 17:18

About two months when I had a bit of a mental breakdown combined with horrible morning sickness while pregnant. It was not a good time for me. I don’t think I actually even went downstairs.

Delatron · 18/02/2026 17:18

Pottering around the garden is fine. We just need a bit of fresh air and daylight in our eyes. I’d go stir crazy but each to their own.

pariswindow · 18/02/2026 17:20

5/6 days following surgery. Then made DH throw me in a wheelchair and get me outside. The feeling of the wind and sun on my face was unforgettable.

Disturbia81 · 18/02/2026 17:20

Probably a few weeks during Covid and also after second baby was born, just hibernated. It was nice! I do love getting outside every day but if I needed to for some reason I know I can hack it. Just do what your body and mind needs

Livpool · 18/02/2026 17:22

6 days after I had DS and was kept in hospital as I was unwell. I was going stir crazy once I started to
recover.

Waitingfordoggo · 18/02/2026 17:26

I reckon 5 days when I had Covid in December 2020. Wasn’t allowed to go out according to the rules of the time (though I felt well enough to go out).

As a student, I had a few 48 hour ‘love ins’ (spend the weekend in bed getting high and having lots of sex).

But as a rule, I’m out and about multiple times a day. Going to work, walking the dog, shopping etc.

ScruffySandra · 18/02/2026 17:28

I've probably never even lasted a day. We've got a dog who needs a walk, and if it was raining too heavily to walk her, I'd be going to the gym anyway. I go stir crazy stuck indoors all day, even in our lovely home, but dont judge others who dont have the same affliction!

Emori · 18/02/2026 17:31

10 days. The city flooded and I was in a tenth floor apartment. It took 10 days for the water to clear. I started off ok but tbh went a bit feral and by the end of it I was in full on I am Legend mode. It's not good to be so isolated. I gained an appreciation of how much we keep our thoughts and rhythms regulated by being around other people, even just with casual contact and it was alarming to experience how quickly that can go.

Boolabus · 18/02/2026 17:31

A week when I'd covid but I did walk around the garden for fresh air. I'm not great at staying indoors for too long I'm very outdoorsy.

MrsAvocet · 18/02/2026 17:31

I was pretty much housebound for several months after an accident a few years ago. I only went out for hospital appointments. I'm not sure what my longest run without going out was but probably 2-3 weeks.

Rainydaycat · 18/02/2026 17:33

Getting on for three months after a nasty injury.

ItWasMyTurn · 18/02/2026 17:33

6 weeks, in hospital. I'd had Covid (in an induced coma), then a stroke at the same time. The worst 6 weeks of my life.

Hundslappadrifa · 18/02/2026 17:44

God, I get cabin fever before a single day is out! I have to go out every day, poorly or not 😬

Thepeopleversuswork · 18/02/2026 17:48

Aside from when ill or in freakishly awful weather probably 24 hours. I can’t bear being inside too long, I get unbearably anxious and cabin feverish.

Can’t understand how people can stand it.

youalright · 18/02/2026 17:49

Just over a year agoraphobia

CheeseWisely · 18/02/2026 17:50

3 days maybe? 4 at a push.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 18/02/2026 17:53

Two weeks whilst I was on a mental ward. After that they let me go out for a walk round the hospital. Drove me even bloody madder not being able to go outside.

Peterrabbitismybrother · 18/02/2026 17:53

I go outside everyday, I would need to be hospitalised or severely ill or otherwise incapacitated to stay inside.

Even when I had given birth (episiotomy, stitches etc) I was up and outside with the baby 2/3 days after the birth.

I love the outdoors though!

DotNTimmy · 18/02/2026 17:55

Each time i've had a newborn, I've not left the house for a month or more after getting home. With dc1 it was closer to 6 weeks, with 2 and 3 more like a month, just from the practical side of things with other dc and dh going back to work.

It felt totally natural to me to want to stay indoors for a few weeks every time. I had no inclination at all to go out, anywhere, and I was lucky that dh was both able and willing to support me in that.

StormyLandCloud · 18/02/2026 17:58

About a week, I have mobility issues and often remain in pyjamas for days on end, online shopping, DH collects things so it’s not always necessary to go out, especially if I had a flare up

dudsville · 18/02/2026 17:59

The longest I haven't gone outside would be post op, but I do need quiet days indoors at least once a week. I'm deeply exhausted and over full with the social aspect of work and would love a week at home alone being quiet!
