To be annoyed work posted this job in this way?

I’m on annual leave from work this week for half term by chance I logged onto our companies’s intranet.
There is a job advert for a job within our department that I wasn’t aware of this would be the next step up from my current role there is 8 or so of us in a similar role to mine that would probably want to go for it. I haven’t been told it was coming and it’s advertised for internal department applications only and with an opening application window of 4 days which closes today. So, obviously they had someone in mind which wasn’t me but I think that’s not good practice for half of us that are off with children this week it was a well timed way of reducing applications I suppose. I feel really demotivated I suppose.

YANBU, I’d be pretty annoyed too. Will you apply anyway?

Good luck.

mellicauli · 18/02/2026 12:34

Apply anyway. Make your case why it should be you. You've nothing to lose and it shows you are interested which can do no harm

BTW: You could have reacted with "Great, still time to get my application in" rather than "They obviously don't want me". It may just be a one off but if you are always like this I could see why they might want to promote someone else.

Hankunamatata · 18/02/2026 12:35

No email? Our internal posts usually sent by email notification

Duvetdayneeded · 18/02/2026 12:36

Have you got a policy that says how long job advert has to be advertised for? Why didn’t you ask an extension due to you being on leave? But your line manager is either a bastard it incompetent for doing this.

7stripybaskets · 18/02/2026 12:36

Unfortunately it closes at 6pm and I’m out with my children for the afternoon so I don’t think i’d have time.

Do you want to be right or get what you want?

Say nothing.
Do your application now and Apply today.
Prep like hell and hopefully you get the job.

Thundertoast · 18/02/2026 12:36

I think parents do over estimate how much attention non-parents pay to half terms etc. I would have expected HR to flag though, but I can also see how this happens- takes ages to get the job signed off, then they still want to have the person in by a certain deadline because of financial targets or other stuff...

That's a choice. You've chosen to prioritise your kids and that's fine. You could come home for 4 and get some kind of application in for 6.

Lindy2 · 18/02/2026 12:40

If you want a try at this then you really need to squeeze in getting an application in before 6pm tonight.

Even if it's not a perfect application it will hopefully get you noticed as being interested. You can always ask to expand on your application when you are back in the office as the 4 day opening (which seems ridiculously short) clashed with your annual leave.

DrCalLightman · 18/02/2026 12:42

You miss all the shots you dont take.

Either make the effort to apply, or dont.

You could be sat drafting your application instead of writing on MN. Having a defeatist attitude won't get you far.

SoScarletItWas · 18/02/2026 12:43

Not ideal, but I would email your manager and cc HR expressing your interest with a summary of why you’re suitable. Attach CV if possible from your phone. Ask for this email to be taken as your application as you are on leave.

I do agree with PP that you could make 20 mins to get some sort of application in. And are you already talking to your manager about wanting the next step as part of objectives/reviews?

The one certainty is if you don’t apply, you won’t be considered.

Was just going to say the sane. Instead of posting on here, get your application prepped and submitted

If you really want the job, cut your afternoon outing short and apply.

Wallywobbles · 18/02/2026 12:46

Like hell what I let anything be a priority over this. Let this be a lesson to always have a CV ready to go and to never stop applying for jobs.

fartotheleftside · 18/02/2026 12:46

Why don’t you just email HR (or whoever the contact is) and ask if you can apply properly by tomorrow as you are on AL and have only just seen the job advert.

or ask them what the most convenient way of applying would be, given you are on AL.

This. Drop what you're doing and do the best application possible.

You have 5.5 hrs.

Stick them in front of the TV with a disney movie and some decent snacks.
Crack open chatgpt and get going

catipuss · 18/02/2026 12:49

Tell them you have only just found out about it. If you really can't do it today say you are out today but will get an application in tomorrow and you would have done it sooner but there must have been a slip up and you hadn't received the notification.

You use it to make sure you don't get the job!

BennyHenny · 18/02/2026 12:51

Just email HR and say you’ve only just seen the advert due to it being posted and closing whilst on leave and ask them if they’ll accept a late application.

What does ChatGPT have to do with anything?

It's a great tool for optimising your CV and creating cover letters if you use the right prompts.

Wallywobbles · 18/02/2026 12:52

You use it to give you feedback not write it.

ldnmusic87 · 18/02/2026 12:52

I think you have to be proactive, you were never going to get an email notifying you the job was there, you need to set up alerts or look regularly.
