To think the 'patch test', is just a load of unnecessary faff

I hate it, Im a spur of the moment person, I dont want to have to wait around 48 hours to get something done.

Ive had a few treatments abroad (Only Italy and Spain) and they didnt ask for patch tests there.

More so in my case today where apparently the last patch test was over 6 months ago so its 'run out'.

My lash lift insurance is invalid without a patch test

I suspect they all are.

Of course it's an unnecessary faff for most people but not for the small % of people who have a reaction. The issue is, you don't know if you are one of them until you have the patch test. I find it frustrating too but it's one of those things - the business needs to demonstrate they are taking adequate precautions.

{mention:plum}pkum@plumplum How dare you say my post is nonsense! I have a very real allergy now to hair colour that I didn't have before. I'm 58 and have been going to the hairdressers for years and it's only been in the last few years that they have refused to do a colour without first doing a patch test. They may well have been advised to before but it's only been in the past few years that they seem to be taking this seriously. I'm not suggesting any crazy conspiracy theories, how ridiculous, you are the one talking nonsense.

Yes because of insurance and liability

It's nothing to do with covid which is the bit I'm saying is nonsense.

BunnyLake · 17/02/2026 13:55

I never did the patch tests. I was fine but it might have just been luck.

{mention:PlumPlumb}@PlumPlumbReading this post has prompted me to Google it and, according to a BBC report in 2021, Imperial College London were researching a link between people who had suffered from Coronavirus who'd suddenly developed allergies to dye. They suspected that Coronavirus, similar to other illnesses, could have compromised the immune systems of people who'd had it. I'm not some crazy conspiracy theorist and I certainly don't believe in some weird collaboration between hairdressers and the government, but this could be a very valid reason why myself and many others have developed an allergy to dye we've been using for years!

It's true though. I've been having patch tests for decades. I really don't know how covid comes into it.

I’m allergic to the LVL perm lotion. Never knew this until I had the patch test. Fine with the tint but def not with the perm lotion. Glad I found that out at my patch test & not when it was going on 😬

So you’d rather you had an allergic reaction to eyelash glue than wait 48 hours to be sure it’s safe? It’s your eyes - don’t mess with them!

I wouldnt 'rather have' a reaction of course, but I never have and I can buy stuff online that I can use whenever I like and as I say Ive had them done quite a lot on holidays and Im not expected to have a patch test in the places Ive been to.

But you do that at your own risk.

You’re not entitled to do it at the risk of someone else’s business if they are done for negligence should you have a reaction.

Rainallnight · 17/02/2026 15:10

I agree with you, OP. Drives me mad.

This was for lashes

Even more reason to test !!
I have lashes done without a patch test and had an allergic reaction and let me tell u it was absolutely horrible 😭

Here’s a pic of the reaction I had to a patch test when I wanted to try a new hair salon OP … I have a permanent scar there now! Never had a reaction to any other kind of hair dye before. Thank fuck it was just a small patch behind my ear and not my entire head huh?

Omg! I’m not the OP but you have converted me, I’ll never grumble about a patch test again. I’m also glad for you that it was over your whole head!

BauhausOfEliott · 17/02/2026 15:37

It is absolutely not unnecessary faff. You can develop an allergy to hair dye at any time.

GreatAuntytobe · 17/02/2026 16:02

{mention:HelenaWaiting}i@HelenaWaitingi think the reason that Covid comes into it is that some people who contracted it experienced changes to their immune system (as can happen with many illnesses). I, personally, noticed that hairdressers I went to before who didn't bother with a patch test, suddenly became insistent on the client having one. I'm not some conspiracy theorist, I'm merely making a personal observation from my own experience. I'd always advise anyone to have a patch test, it may be inconvenient but it's just not worth the risk.

Any allergy at any time too, my mum developed a prawn allergy in later life. I hope that doesnt happen to me!
