To ask for help deciding on a London theatre show?

I really can’t decide, the more I look into London shows, the more get added to my wishlist.

So far, I have seen: Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, Wicked, Nye, Calamity Jane, The Lion King, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Beautiful and Motown: The Musical. There must be others that I’ve forgotten about too.

My top contenders this time round are: The Phantom of the Opera, Hamilton and the Book of Mormon.

Back to the future is brilliant. I did not like book of mormon

ThisYearIsMyYear · 17/02/2026 12:09

Hamilton is excellent and personally I'd like to see Oliver, Cabaret and Into The Woods. But do yourself a favour and cross The Book of Mormon off your list. It's a couple of hours of my life I'll never be getting back, and I love musicals for the most part. The company are great but the show itself is just terrible and embarrassingly dated. Another musical everyone seemed to love and I hated was Hadestown. But I'll second the pp who suggested Matilda, which I enjoyed way more than I expected. I'm kind of curious about A Mirrored Monet too, but it's not a recommendation as I don't know anything about it.

JuliettaCaeser · 17/02/2026 12:11

Caberet is incredible best thing we’ve seen. Extremely adult content though definitely for 16 plus only.

Hadestown is good. Off to see Oliver tomorrow for half term treat can’t wait!

Found moulin rouge very lightweight. The film
is actually far better.

SpanThatWorld · 17/02/2026 12:13

Hadestown and Operation Mincemeat

Greenfingers37 · 17/02/2026 12:15

Found Miss Saigon very boring but adore Les Mis (have tickets for Albert Hall in June) and am looking forward to seeing Paddington in July.

Justploddingonandon · 17/02/2026 12:24

Operation Mincemeat, Les Mis (better than Phantom in my opinion), Oliver! and Paddington would be my favourites out of what's currently on. Matilda is good too, though when I went it was somewhat marred by the audience being full of children who were really too young to be there, and were variously bored/scared/unable to stay in their seats.

Anndalouzier · 17/02/2026 12:24

Operation mincemeat

Anndalouzier · 17/02/2026 12:25

Loved Book of Mormon too.

Anndalouzier · 17/02/2026 12:25

Also found Hamilton boring

Operation Mincemeat will be touring the UK this year. I’ll see it closer to home, rather than in London.

This thread is proving to be very expensive (but very helpful too.)

Thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks for that - just checked and it’s playing close to me this year and a lot cheaper than seeing it in London. Also seen Miss Saigon and Book of Mormon and will be seeing Six soon.
London prices are so expensive in comparison but I’m also currently looking to see something there in June.

Mummyhasgonemad · 17/02/2026 13:16

Hamilton is fantastic - seen it multiple times. Loved Matilda but not seen Book of Mormon.

We have tickets to see Beetlejuice this year - and i cannot wait!

TanquerayTickles · 17/02/2026 13:19

Hamilton
Six
Oh Mary
Titanique
Hadestown
Operation Mincemeat
Paddington

sweatervest · 17/02/2026 13:21

I didn'tike Mormon or Hamilton but I loved matilda and am going to hopefully see the producers too at some point

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 17/02/2026 13:25

The Michael Jackson one is very good.

Miranda65 · 17/02/2026 13:25

I would also go for Hamilton, Operation Mincemeat, Cabaret and The Producers.
Matilda is always excellent too.

Does it have to be a musical? The current All My Sons is fantastic.

(But it's so subjective - I have seen a lot of theatre and thought Wicked was utterly grim, closely followed by Six. I find the plot of Miss Saigon laughable, even tho I know it's Madame Butterfly - maybe opera makes it more acceptable?).

whatnexxt · 17/02/2026 13:26

Everyone raves about Phantom but I thought it was so shit I left half way through. Book of Mormon is good. Hamilton much better.

Apologies if it's already been mentioned, but I can heartily recommend The Lion King.

Hamilton is amazing!

Metalguruisitu · 17/02/2026 10:16

What’s his logic OP. It wasn’t near the top of mine but it blew me away. I don’t like Opera, and I get cringy at musicals sometimes, but it was something I was truly engrossed in and some of the effects were amazing. The sort of show where you remember years later how you felt watching it.

The logic is that she wasn’t keen on the film!

Go see all three - all are wonderful in their own right and very different.

boysmuminherts · 17/02/2026 13:43

Phantom of the Opera is the worst musical ever. Closely followed by Come from Away.
Hamilton is excellent, I havent seen Book of Mormon but the soundtrack is great.
I'd recommend Matilda and Les Miserables. Operation mincemeat is supposed to be good. I'm going to book for Paddington.

I think Hamilton overrated but I seem to be in the minority there.

I enjoyed Mrs Doubtfire much more than I thought I would.

Matilda was great, although we went for the kids benefit DH and I both really liked it.

DH wasn't keen on Wicked but 12 yo DD and I loved it.

Back to the Future was just ok.

We all loved The Producers.

The Stranger Things musical was amazing, terrific performances and the staging and set design was so clever and inventive, I spent half of it going "how the hell did they do that?" Not suitable for children though, it's pretty gory.

Really didn't like Motown the Musical, the actual music was good but the story was dull and I found the dialogue a bit cringe-worthy.

I wasn’t keen on Wicked either.

I have the same conclusion about Motown: The Musical too. My DM loved it though. I’m not fussed on jukebox musicals in general though, despite having seen a few of them!

Loved Moulin Rouge and Miss Saigon also Lion King but you’ve seen it

Have you been to The Globe? An incredible experience whatever the performance.
Even if you think you’ll struggle with the Shakespearean language you’ll understand and absorb so much more than you might anticipate.

I’d love to go to the Globe. It’s not do-able in this trip though (we’re only going for two nights.)

Next time, for sure!

Agree Miss Saigon was good, and of course there's also Les Misérables.
