Kids should not be in pubs after 6pm?

Just that really. Evening time in the pub is for adult relaxation and socialising, not somewhere for meeting the needs of young children. I just want to chill out and enjoy a glass of wine without an infant screaming from a buggy, kids on screens or toddlers running about. Yes, I am having a bit of a moan but the last few times I have been in pubs in my area there have been kids still knocking about well past 8pm with parents barely keeping them in check. Can we have pubs in the evening as adult only spaces please.

In Scotland they're not allowed in after 8. After 9 in Spoons I think. There tends not to be many. Find another pub? Find a quieter corner?

whatcanthematterbe81 · 16/02/2026 21:35

After 7 I think is the norm

BlueJuniper94 · 16/02/2026 21:35

Some pubs are 18 and over all the time

whatcanthematterbe81 · 16/02/2026 21:35

Near me anyway

Uberella · 16/02/2026 21:36

Very small children should be home in bed;I’ve been there where tiny kids are screaming because their tired;not a nice experience.

I didn’t take my small kids out to pubs after 6pm.

Airbagger · 16/02/2026 21:36

My nan was a landlady and I grew up in pubs. There was an over 18 side which we obviously were not allowed in . I don’t think the childhood I had exists anymore

Applespearsandpeaches · 16/02/2026 21:36

Depends on the pub. If it’s a pub with a restaurant and a kids menu I think you’re being completely ridiculous to imagine there wouldn’t be kids there at dinner time. The one down my road with live music, no restaurant and a reputation, yeah it’s probably reasonable to think there wouldn’t be kids there.

JoannaTheYodelingCowgirl · 16/02/2026 21:37

I don't think children should be in pubs sorry

But I know loads who are brought along as their parents drink and are offered sips

benten54 · 16/02/2026 21:37

Oh god yes please. So few things are adult only these days.
A pub near us told some parents that they didn’t have insurance for children after 8pm and they would need to leave by then. The kick off was immense.

Attictroll · 16/02/2026 21:37

I would say 7 or 8 especially if so where which serves food.

Tiramisutoyou · 16/02/2026 21:38

Absolutely

“children are welcome here until 7pm”

So why do pubs have kids menus? There’s pubs attached to most Premier Inns for a start, they’re the place where breakfast is served and often the only place to get dinner nearby too!

LadiDahnya · 16/02/2026 21:39

Its normal to expect them out ay a certain time but I have family member in the brewery/pub trade and they say kids are the future of pubs. Take them in and they will come in the future themselves, 6pm is way too early i think 8 is totally reasonable and if its a pub/resturant then even later if they are eating a meal!

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 16/02/2026 21:40

At my local it's 9.

Sadly because adults bring them instead of taking them to the park

Yewoo · 16/02/2026 21:41

A pub that is largely for drinking and evening socialising? I suppose YANBU, although I can’t say it’s an issue I’ve seen often in a drinking pub midweek after 6pm.

A pub that’s primary existence is to serve food and has a children’s menu - YABU

Ablondiebutagoody · 16/02/2026 21:42

Depends on the type of kid and pub. I often take ds11 in for a game of pool or darts of an evening.

It’s pitch black in the park by 4pm some months.

Then keep them at home or take them to a restaurant?

NewTricks2026 · 16/02/2026 21:44

100% agree but let’s be real, the industry is on its knees and cannot afford to restrict the customers they do have.

You think I should take my kids to the park at 6pm in February instead of taking them out for an easy dinner?

That’s a very sweeping statement!

MidnightPatrol · 16/02/2026 21:45

I think 6pm is daylight hours really and so not an issue. 9pm… yes, probably a bit late.

Although in general, as long as they are behaving themselves I think it’s ok. Pubs are just social spaces outside of the home now really in most communities.

XenoBitch · 16/02/2026 21:45

I think Wetherspoons want kids out by 9pm. I think that is ok if they are there for a meal.
Some sports bar type pubs let kids stay a bit later if they are watching a big footie match with family.
My local real boozer pub does no allow kids in at all, which is ace. They allow dogs though 😁

Newbie8918 · 16/02/2026 21:46

Our local is 8pm. That time is plenty. 6 is too early if it’s a pub restaurant but u do agree that no matter what time, they should be in check and supervised. Not running around shouting.
