AIBU To Feel Ripped off by a florist?

My partner had arranged to collect my Valentine’s Day flowers on Saturday morning, which he’d ordered and paid £80 for earlier that week for collection.

However, when he went to collect them, he couldn’t believe what he was presented with. He complained at the time that he didn’t believe the bouquet was worth anywhere near what he’d paid for, others in the store collecting flowers agreed with him but the florists dealing with the collection just gave him a snooty response and carried on serving other customers. He called me to explain, but I had assumed he’d been dramatic, however, when he presented me with them, I was equally shocked, I can’t have thought these would be more than £40 from a good florist or maybe £25 from M&S.

Looking to get some other opinions, would you be happy with these flowers for £80? Personally, I think he should have been offered a partial refund if he wasn’t happy, or that they could have added a little to the bouquet to fill it out a tad. But equally very happy to be told this is what flowers cost and we should adjust our expectations accordingly

YABU - this is good value for money
YANBU - they have had his pants down

Zero skill in that bouquet!
I want the 1% who voted YABU to justify their vote !

I don't deny it in this instance. I have already stated in one of my earlier posts that the condition of the flowers is poor and the arrangement is poor.

To be honest I don’t understand the issue, as in what was he promised it would be before purchase? How large of a bouquet, what flowers, how long was it anticipated to last for etc? Without that information it’s hard to know if what you had is not as described. For all we know, the florist may have been upfront that what you got was the expected product.

I don’t think it looks like it costs £80 but that doesn’t automatically mean the item was significantly not as described. It’s not unheard of for basic things to be overpriced. What was agreed?

Don’t think anyone expects a bunch of withered half dead roses!

A florist needs to cover rent, business rates, wages and more. It isn't £50 mark up per bouquet. Florists don't just unwrap the flowers and put them straight in a bouquet. There is preparation involved and skill. If you don't value a premium product then buy at the supermarket, but flowers from a major retailer are not a direct comparison.

Look, my local Sainsbury’s sell 15 roses (pick your colour) for a fiver.
I’d have them over that bunch pictured any day of the week.
And, yes I have had Interflora flowers, none of them showed 50 quids worth of expertise in either the choosing or arranging 🤷🏻‍♀️

Zov · 17/02/2026 19:45

Yeah the prices that florists charge these days are the reason I get flowers from supermarkets. Haven't got them from a florist since my wedding in the early 1990s. I (and everyone I knew) used to use florists back then to send flowers to people as gifts/for Valentine's Day/Mothers Day/for birthdays etc, (as well as for weddings,) and they were used for funeral flowers for people. But hardly anyone I know uses florists these days ...

If people choose to use florists these days, then good luck to them, but I can get flowers just as nice from Morrisons or Tesco or Sainsburys. I know some people have this 'oooh you should support small independent businesses' mindset, but I'm not spending £80 when I can spend £8.

I honestly don't know how florists keep going these days. Many years ago when I (and others used them for things other than our wedding,) they were reasonably priced and I'm pretty sure supermarkets didn't do bunches of flowers. Maybe a small amount, like carnations and daffodils and roses but not to the extent that they do now.

.

Look: you're trying to compare apples and pears.

You pay your money, you take your choice.

What we really want to know is has anyone gone back to the florist's and what's the outcome?

What adult in their right mind celebrates valentines these days?

LOL, there's always one. Some people enjoy showing the one they love that they care about them. It doesn't mean someone is 'not in their right mind' just because they celebrate Valentine's Day.

I bet you don't think adults should celebrate birthdays either? 🙄

And I bet you put your Christmas tree up on 23rd December, and take it down on Boxing Day. And I bet think that no adult - ever - should like Disney.

Oh and yes, I KNOW you show the ones you love that you care about them every day of the year, and don't neeeeed a special date to show them. Well people who celebrate Valentines Day show they ones they love that they care about them every day of the year too! They just show it a little more on certain days, like Valentines Day.

!

£80 for flowers is OTT. Lesson learned, I suppose. It's just another way to separate you from your money and the hype around Valentine's Day is meaningless. It's not what they pay out for show, it's how they are as a person, how they treat you throughout the year

JillyComeLately · 17/02/2026 23:51

You've really, really missed the point. It's not about empty displays of love (which is a baseless assumption of yours), it's about paying for a good product and getting a turd.

It's all relative. It beong meaningless to you doesn't mean it applies to every other human on earth.

Treating someone on valentine's Day doesn't mean not treating them well every other time.

It's not mutually exclusive.

Allseeingallknowing · 18/02/2026 14:17

OP what happened about the refund?

rainbowunicorn22 · 18/02/2026 18:13

Seen better in a garage forecourt. Total rip off

MMUmum · 18/02/2026 18:18

BreadInCaptivity · 16/02/2026 19:18

He was fleeced. They look half dead and it’s a bloody small bouquet for the price.

They had MUCH nicer ones for £20 in the local village Co-Op.

Agreed, same in our village. As a rule I would always recommend Lidl's flowers, particularly lillies, they are consistently excellent quality. These are my latest

Zerosleep · 18/02/2026 18:27

Disgusting. I wouldn’t have left the shop with those.

HAPPYBRIT · 18/02/2026 18:33

Find the florist on Facebook and post your complaint.

Businesses hate bad publicity on Social Media Sites

SpiritOfEcstasy · 18/02/2026 18:36

I find really honest google reviews with photos to be very effective in these situations.

MaddestGranny · 18/02/2026 18:59

I'm so sorry for you both, OP.

Your DH was making a lovely gesture and was royally ripped off and, as a result, you were disappointed.

The shop deserves every atom of flak you may choose to direct their way.

TrustPilot? TripAdvisor? - I don't know, I'm not good at these things.

But. make sure to give them A TOTALLY RUBBISH review on every single site you can think of.
Then, take each other out for a gentle evening at your favourite local restaurant.
with love, MG.

Littlemisssavvy · 18/02/2026 19:18

My BIL used to work as a flower importer at the big flower markets and says that its a waste to buy flowers at Valentine’s or Mother’s Day as they are nearly always poor quality and 3 times the normal price.

YourGreenCat · 18/02/2026 19:32

I would absolutely put reviews with photos everywhere. Factual, stating price.
It's a complete rip-off.

He should have refused to take them and demanded a full refund there and then.

ImPamDoove · 16/02/2026 19:27

£80 for some roses that look half dead and a bit of eucalyptus? Absolutely ripped off. This is why I never buy flowers from florists.

They're not all bad, I have some very good ones in my area

Laura95167 · 18/02/2026 20:45

They look like crisps in a bag

StevieNic · 18/02/2026 23:06

I don’t understand why he left the shop with them, he should have refused to collect taken a picture to show why and emailed a refund request

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 19/02/2026 00:05

Top class piss take. Difficult to believe it happened. Must have really spoilt thie occasion

l only use Florists fir very special occasions. Marks and Spencer and Waitrose are usually very good.

Also had some decent, resinably priced flowers from Sainsbury, the Coop and even ALDI.

Does this shop have a review page on its website? If so post that photo pronto.

Also, they may also be a member of some kind of National UK Florist Assocition

If so, get in touch with then as well and complain

As a former florist, I can tell you this is beyond a rip off. Awful.

Zov · 17/02/2026 11:14

Who was asking for a refund then? Confused

The recipient's partner. The flowers were ordered for someone who'd suffered a bereavement, by someone at their workplace (the buyer), but they arrived dead and the recipient's partner complained. I expect they didn't want to tell the person who made the kind gesture of ordering them what had happened.
