Unfriending right wing friends

One of my school mum friends of around 10 years has started sharing loads of Restore Britain/Rupert Lowe posts.

I’m actually really shocked as she’s an Irish immigrant herself.

I’ve unfriended her which is a shame as day to day she’s ok. Also another mum who has been liking and commenting on the Restore Britain posts, they’ll probably tell me they’re not racist but I can’t be arsed calling them out.

Instead of unfriending her, could you not simply explain to her the opinions that Irish immigrants are supposed to have?

Happyjoe · 16/02/2026 20:14

Daytimetellyqueen · 16/02/2026 20:04

This!

The only intolerant people I have met are those on the left.

My neighbour said he'd like to see the people on boats drown. I don't think you can get more intolerant that wanting murder because they're asylum seekers, can you?

I have never heard someone with more left leanings say something like that.

Katypp · 16/02/2026 18:51

I take it you are using the term racist as interchangeable for anyone who does not share your views?
Still it's a handy one, isn't it? It enables you to shut down debate (who wants to defend a racist?) and parade your superior opinions in one fell swoop. You must think you are very clever.

Yep and many appear to ignore the OP apparent racism. How dare an Irish person have this view, it’s surprised me because she’s Irish etc. the problem with the left is that they love a stereotype more than anyone else. It’s why you can know and like someone for 10 years because of their identity group. She didn’t know this friend she assumed a set of values to her and now acts hurt & angry they haven’t lived up to it, whilst ignoring every good trait they know this person to have. It is not racist to want the grooming gangs scandal dealt with properly, it’s jot racist to think illegal immigration is a problem & it’s not misogynistic to think lying to people about the reality of their biology is wrong

pavillion1 · 16/02/2026 20:17

Be interesting to see the May 6th local election results

"Brexiters" - so around 50% of the population then?

Nope, 52% of the population didn't vote for Brexit. 52% of the people with the right to vote AND who could be bothered to show up to the ballot did. That's about 17+m people, so around 37% of the electorate at the time.

Dollymylove · 16/02/2026 20:19

Thingything · 16/02/2026 20:06

I think quite a lot of (racist) people would want to deport people who are settled and just don't have white skin. A few clicks on Facebook and you can see there are loads out there. They tend to be the ones that also like Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

Ie: not all Yaxley-Lennon fans are racist, but all racists like him!

Well you can say what you like about Yaxley Lennon but hes one of the few people of note who actually said anything publicly about Rhiannon Whytes horrific murder.
Not a peep out of Comrade Starmer and his bully boys. We've had Starmer and Jess "I will protect all females" Phillips apologising to Epstejns victims (??) yet not a peep about the British grooming gangs and the fact that most of the Labour MPs voting against a public enquiry!!

Pollyanna87 · 16/02/2026 19:57

I don’t consider the Irish to be immigrants.

Me neither. But I don't think they were immigrants in the sense we think of it today? They were coming over (largest population of immigration I think in history for years), esp in the potato famine times but I don't think there's been a restriction in movement? I could be wrong there of course.

They were treated badly though I believe.

I do always think the Brexit vote would have gone differently if people without the right to vote, voted or if we allowed people with the correct view to vote twice or three times? If we stopped British people voting it would have been very different. It’s too late for the May election but I’d like to see Labour put this in place before the GE.

GreenWheat · 16/02/2026 20:25

I unfollow anyone who starts spouting political opinions on FB because that is not what I want to use it for. I use FB to keep up with friends I don't see often in person, and for local events and info. I don't want politics thrust down my throat while I'm there.

My point was, the whole population doesn’t have the right to vote (under 18s for example, not talking about nationalities here) and even those who did didn't all vote, so referring to the 52% of the ballots as 52% of the population is wrong.

Not clever, just right.

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 16/02/2026 20:28

Lots of people with the far right. All of them on the wrong side of history. I'm sure you wouldn't have problems with my bil, a white immigrant.

Reform are scum.

It was initially refused because already had an enquiry that lasted years under the conservatives.. Then another recommendation came in and Kier accepted it and the enquiry will now go ahead. So what's your issue?

Tommy Robinson defended his close friend and co-founder of the EDL Richard Price... who turned out to have had drugs and made indecent images of children.
Tommy Robinson lies in bed with may other shit people who have been convicted of crimes against children, women..

Tommy Robinson is so far removed from the saint you paint him out to be. He himself has multiple convictions. Yuck. He has used other peoples pain to grift on. He's disgusting.

JoannaTheYodelingCowgirl · 16/02/2026 17:47

As a Reform UK supporter myself, Id rather not be friends with narrow-minded people who cant accept people have different political opinions from yourselfSmile

Would you be friends with an immigrant?

AmberDreams · 16/02/2026 20:36

I found out someone I know voted Labour. I didn’t unfriend them but it’s hard not to question their judgement. I’m not sure what I’d do if I found out a friend voted Green.

GoldbergVariations · 16/02/2026 20:42

GoldDuster · 16/02/2026 17:01

I think it's a good idea not to be friends with bigots and racists.

Indeed. Whichever side of the centre of politics they sit.

Auburngal · 16/02/2026 20:42

I fell out with a friend (she retired 2-3 years before) over her racist comments about some of our colleagues. Plus she said every Indian in our city to go back home. She worships the Daily Mail

About a few months later, everyone else work worked with her fell out with her - mainly due to her racist attitude.

I stopped talking to a few people who believe in every word in the Daily Mail.

maltravers · 16/02/2026 20:43

ACynicalDad · 16/02/2026 17:45

Sitting in an echo chamber and not hearing other people's thoughts is how you end up somewhere as polarised as the USA. Try to understand why people think the other way rather than demonising them. I have many friends with different politics to me, including my best friend.

Hear, hear. While I accept that some opinions are beyond the pale, most are not. It’s good to be tolerant of views you don’t share. Intolerance seems to have become a virtue to some.

Bleddyrain · 16/02/2026 20:43

Helen1625 · 16/02/2026 18:21

It's really quite interesting that the insults on this thread are all coming from the left. So far there's been c*, misogynist, fascist, racist, basically anyone who is not left is free game for an insult. The only ones who are showing an intolerance and bigoted narrow minded views so far are the left.

I might be considered right wing, particularly by a left winger.

I don't agree that men should share women's spaces - would I go out of my way to be rude to a man dressed as a woman? No.

Do I think it's acceptable for men to dress as women and access women's spaces? Also no.

Am I concerned about the people coming in on boats? Yes.

Do I think we should be housing them? No.

Am I alarmed about the number of sexual assaults carried out by these men? Yes.

I'm also alarmed by the amount of knife crime on our streets and I am fully aware that even indigenous Brits commit crimes and sexual assaults.

I hate them all equally.

Do I think grooming gangs should be investigated? Yes.

Do I think everyone involved in the cover up should be investigated, from the rich and famous to the police forces and councillors? Also yes.

Am I just an ordinary mom and wife who gets up, goes to work, feeds her family, pays ever increasing bills and is sick to the back teeth of this govt and any other govt who cares more about foreign affairs and giving money away whilst we struggle? Yes.

If that makes me right wing and therefore a racist or a fascist or any other 'ist', then quite frankly, I'll wear that badge. It's not even an insult anymore. It's just words used to silence by those jumping on a bandwagon thinking that they are on the 'correct' side.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

The VERY LOUD lefties on this thread would consider me far right for sharing your views @Helen1625. They are very loud aren't they? 😅

I keep quiet about my voting preferences as do most of my sensible friends. The loudest friends of mine are the ones throwing the word racist around in virtually every conversation and at anyone that is too polite to them to shut TF up. 😴

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 16/02/2026 20:44

I think yabu.
Im with @Helen1625

Rather than unfriend them you should try and talk to her in a questioning and heated way
Reforms has some of his deeply problematic views particularly those around women and womens rights.
How will she feel in a decade or so when her now 8/10 year old is being forced to consider marrying a 40/50 incel type due to deeply limited socioeconomic choices...?

people are (rightly) angry but reform isn't the answer.

Blocking her / Not talking is the mistake we made during Brexit....We shouldn't repeat it - the consequences will be a lot more serious

outofsounds · 16/02/2026 20:48

Of course no left winger could possibly ever be racist. Anti-semitism anyone?

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 16/02/2026 20:51

To be clear i dont intend to vote reform but I can 100% understand why people want to / intend to

And calling them morons etc isnt going to stop the car crash that will be reform if they win.

GoldbergVariations · 16/02/2026 20:54

BigFishLittleFishCardboardBoxes · 16/02/2026 17:36

One of my really good friends voted Reform and I’m so disappointed.

You could always do a Daily Mail sad face.

I found out someone I know voted Labour. I didn’t unfriend them but it’s hard not to question their judgement. I’m not sure what I’d do if I found out a friend voted Green.

I really couldn’t be friends with someone who cared so little for my rights as a woman that they voted Green.
