How often you replace hot water bottle?

Sofamonkey2day · 15/02/2026 20:09

I love my hot water bottle. And my dc do too. We use it almost every night. I've never read the instructions on the bottle before but it says to replace every 2 years?! Mine are way older than that! Do you replace often? Am i the only one who didn't know and doesn't do it?

I used keep them for year then realised they get mouldy inside 😩

CaravanCurtains · 15/02/2026 20:40

I replace them when it says. There's a date marker on them that tells you when they were made.

WooYa · 15/02/2026 20:54

I've got a hot water bottle that is about 25 years old 😬 I haven't used it for years but keep it because I'm a sentiment old fool

SauvignonBlanche · 15/02/2026 20:55

I read the other week about the need to replace after a couple of years.
The next day the bloody thing leaked all through my mattress.

Sprogonthetyne · 15/02/2026 22:00

I used to keep them years but since the kids started using them, they've been replaced every two years on the dot.

REDB99 · 15/02/2026 22:09

I’ve had some of my current ones for a good 5 years. I know about the 2 year replacement and do buy new ones but then end up using the older ones at times. Your thread may have inspired me to actually get rid of them rather than keep using them!

DD only ever has ones up to 2 years old.

MIAMNER · 15/02/2026 22:19

I’ve had the same one of these wheat bags for 30 years. Recently my teenage daughters discovered it and started to fight over it (especially when they have period cramps) so I bought them one each. I put it in the microwave for 2 mins, much less faff than a hot water bottle.

I replace them when they spring a leak or are noticeably thinning. They last much longer than two years.

ProfessionalComplex · 16/02/2026 05:48

Once every 3 generations.

ArcticSkua · 16/02/2026 05:50

Ours are much older than two years.

I have to ask, what happens to them after 2 years? and is it at the stroke of midnight?

Do you set a reminder in your phone on the day you buy one so you can replace it in 2 years on the dot?

EleanorReally · 16/02/2026 06:23

my intentions are to replace but i still havent
i love my hot water bottle

EleanorReally · 16/02/2026 06:24

although i am confused because if go to buy a new one it seems to say 2022 on it, so out of date already

The rubber brakes down to the point they are more likly to burst/leak, and I don't want my kids being covered in scolding hot water, or even a bed covered in lukewarm water if it happens after it's cooled.

We only use them in the winter, so they get packed away with the thicker duvets April-October. Every other year I get new bottles to go in the covers, when I unpack the winter bedding. They cost £2, and sell them in supermarkets, so it's really not that arduous.

BigFishLittleFishCardboardBoxes · 16/02/2026 08:24

As a nurse I’ve seen some awful burns from hot water bottles so please replace them.

Shedmistress · 16/02/2026 08:29

I was an avid hot water bottler for as long as I can remember but I moved onto a heated blanket last winter and ditched the HWBs and never looked back.

JulieJo · 16/02/2026 09:37

I replace mine every few years, probably around 3. The rubber disintegrates inside so they may split if used for too long.

I've just bought a new one from Argos it is ceam with a chunky knit cover - do not buy one of these, I think the hole in the neck is too small, when you fill it, the water spurts out. I've stopped using it.

I've now bought a Superdrug one, it is blue without a cover, much better than the Argos one.

The thing that made me become organised about replacing old hot water bottles was one bursting and really burning my friend. She put it under her thighs on the sofa, the pressure made the water spurt out all over the skin on the back of her legs and burned her so badly.

It's a little thing but really important.

Theraffarian · 16/02/2026 09:45

I wasn’t super good at replacing mine until one burst in the bed . Luckily it was before I had got in , but still a pain to clean and dry everything. Primark have theirs at half price at the moment, picked up a lovely one with a faux fur cover for £4 last week.

RedPony1 · 16/02/2026 09:52

i never remember to replace. but probably should!

Wheat bags are rubbish, they have a bad whiff (even the "scented ones") and don't stay hot anywhere near long enough

This is how it happens.

Also people pouring the water into it. Had one burn once where a child had poured boiling water in a hot water bottle and poured the water all down herself. It was nasty.

Sajacas · 16/02/2026 10:08

The rubber degrades and can break suddenly. Every few years or so there is a story in the paper of a small child with bad burns because people do not know they are supposed to be replaced.
It is one of those things- better safe than sorry. I would rather waste my money by replacing the hot water bottle than risk burning myself or a family member.

Or buy one of those plug in blankets that go over you and switch off automatically.

GasPanic · 16/02/2026 10:37

Even if they are new they are risky and could go wrong. After many years of use even worse as they can perish.

Best avoided IMO. Yes the probability that they will go wrong is low, but if they do leak over someone the horrific burns are going to affect them for the rest of their life.
