How often you replace hot water bottle?

I love my hot water bottle. And my dc do too. We use it almost every night. I've never read the instructions on the bottle before but it says to replace every 2 years?! Mine are way older than that! Do you replace often? Am i the only one who didn't know and doesn't do it?

Replace them when they start leaking or seem thinner.

Santa brings new ones in kids stockings each other year so that’s my cue to bin the old ones. He’s good like that! I always feel like I’m probably wasting money but don’t want to risk it. Saying that when we moved in with my mum during Covid she insisted on filling them all each night as in her eyes I clearly wasn’t yet a responsible adult to do so so maybe we are neurotic about them in our family!

My brother had terrible burns from one bursting, he was in hospital for weeks so I don't use them, it's not worth the risk.

@MIAMNER The wheat bags just dont feel the same 😔

Agreed, they have a dampness that I find unpleasant, and I don't like the smell.

I aim to replace my bottle every year. It's not a huge expense, and it's such a comforting thing to have if you're careful and don't overfill them/drop them. Nothing else eases period pain like my hot bottle water does.

I had no idea about this! I’ve just replaced mine but the previous one was 24 years old! 😬 I only replaced it because the cover wasn’t as fluffy 🤣

I've had one burst on me and scald the back of my leg. I'm really vigilant about them now.

Gnomer · 16/02/2026 11:24

We just replace them when they start leaking.

If you don't over fill them and do squeeze the air out the top then there shouldn't be any risk of bursting. I've never had one burst in 40 years. I use one nearly all year as my feet are always cold.

The rubber brakes down to the point they are more likly to burst/leak, and I don't want my kids being covered in scolding hot water, or even a bed covered in lukewarm water if it happens after it's cooled.

We only use them in the winter, so they get packed away with the thicker duvets April-October. Every other year I get new bottles to go in the covers, when I unpack the winter bedding. They cost £2, and sell them in supermarkets, so it's really not that arduous.

I do this ^ and I started doing this after two of our old water bottles leaked, one at DD’s bed, one at mine. Luckily it was just a drip so no hot water burns but it’s a wake up call We had them longer than two years, they looked ok so I wouldn’t go by look.
Covers are kept for more than 2 years if they are ok.

The £2 price point doesn't suggest a level of quality I want in a product that is keeping boiling water from scalding my body.

I replace mine every few years, probably around 3. The rubber disintegrates inside so they may split if used for too long.

I've just bought a new one from Argos it is ceam with a chunky knit cover - do not buy one of these, I think the hole in the neck is too small, when you fill it, the water spurts out. I've stopped using it.

I've now bought a Superdrug one, it is blue without a cover, much better than the Argos one.

I've got the same blue one 💙
