Splitting a bedroom without building a partition wall.

Will probably build a partition wall in the future when more necessary, but for now, what would be the best way to split a room into 2 bedrooms for children (8 year age gap). A lot of people use kallax units but I'm not sure if/how they can provide a good level of privacy. Also unsure what to do around the door, as there will obviously be only one entry into the room/s. How would you go about this? Is it possible to do so with the older child having a sense of privacy?

You can do it with Kallax, or even with bunk beds and building them in. It won’t be private like a wall though.

the door area in my girls room was shared space, there was no other option.

does the room have two windows? That’s also a consideration when dividing it

I would buy a room divider bunk bed from https://funkybunkbeds.com/product/room-divider-bunk-bed/

Its tricky, a lot of the Internet videos showing rooms divided with funky looking bunks feature very large high ceiling bedrooms that already have two windows. Not like your typical british child's bedroom which might be 3.5 x 3.5m.

I'd use something like b&q alara divider

Yes there are 2 windows so it can be divided down the middle. I've seen the bunk beds idea before but prefer kallax out of those two options.

How did you work it with the door? If using kallax units, would you just stop, say, 1m from the door to allow for entry?

If there's an 8 year age gap then your dc are maybe 2 and 10? That's pretty close to the older dc needing more privacy so why not build a partition wall now? No point in investing in expensive furniture that you have to replace in 18 months.

With one doorway I'd give the older dc the further away space (so younger child doesn't have to walk past their space) Also look at folding concertina doors...

We have good sized rooms, luckily, but i definitely won't be doing those bunk bed things I've seen on the internet! Not a fan personally. I love those b&q dividers but they're out of stock and can't seem to find anything similar

How long is this for? The problem I would say is a say 12 year old/ 4 year old have very different bed times. A kallax isn’t going to block light/noise.

Just turned 1 and almost 9, so a 7.5 year gap. I would be looking to do the partition definitely before she reaches teenage years, but in no rush to get it done asap as she's not a bedroom kid at all (yet!), never spends any time in there and atm baby is still in my bed (co-sleeping). I'm just starting to think he needs his own room/space as he's collecting up quite a lot of toys and his own bits by now, and it would be good to start getting him ready to move into his own bed soonish.

The door is pretty much in the middle of the room, slightly over so would be on the side I was planning on giving the baby anyway.

Any division will give a greater sense of privacy than an open shared room. You could add a curtain/pull across type of door to completly segregate. Xx

Would that work?

Oh wow, I absolutely love that, thank you!

The age gap is awkward for sharing. Can you have a proper partition made, a toddler will remove the boxes from a kallax unit. They take up a lot of space.

Edited

He will also climb it 😂 but the idea posted by @Enkois amazing, I can see that working with toddler's side boarded up.

The age gap is awkward, I know, and will definitely have a partition wall built but it's not necessary just yet as my daughter barely uses her bedroom.

This thread is rather long but there may be some useful suggestions about room splitting
