I just can’t do this for years and years and years. I’m actually unemployed right now and the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m actively looking for a new role but it’s all bullshit, massive JD’s for mediocre pay and mainly 5 days in the office. There is just so much more to life, why did humans create this way of living?

Who is going to pay for you to do nothing? What if everyone did nothing?

Well obviously I DO have to work, as we all do, to be able to afford to live. I just can’t be bothered and get no joy out of any of it and can’t understand why collectively we all settled for this.

I do often think about what would happen if everyone just stopped working.

How are you financing living expenses?
If you have loads of savings... do what you want! If you are relying on state benefits, get a job.

Lots of people don't want to work but that's how the world goes around.

Find a job that can cover your lifestyle with as little hours as possible.

My husband and I have had to cut back whilst we’re on just his salary.

If everyone stopped working... what would you eat? What would you wear? What would you do socially?

There'd be no food grown or manufactured, no tv or Internet maintained, nothing.

CoastOfXmasPast · 12/02/2026 22:32

I get you, OP. I have never been off work, grind full time and always worry about financial security. It’s never enough. I do appreciate mod cons but also wonder if there is another way.

Well I assume if everyone stopped working the human race would fairly quickly die out. Some people’s job is to work in the food industry, how long could you survive without food op?

Nimblethimble · 12/02/2026 22:32

Without knowing how old you are, you could be in for a depressing retirement if you don't work.

Of course, if you have wealth by other means - partner, inheritance, previous work, savings etc - then crack on.

Isit2026yet · 12/02/2026 22:33

@AurielleBaies what do you do/what are you looking for? Are there options to freelance?

AurielleBaies · 12/02/2026 22:34

It’s just hypothetical thinking. Like if everyone just rejected capitalism by not trekking into the office for made up jobs everyday, what would happen

The simple answer is starve. If you go back to medieval times, everyone, kids , old people even the disabled had to do something to put food on the table, keep the house, cloth everyone.Young girls were expected to spin wool. Boys scare crows.
Everyone gathered the harvest.. which is why the long school summer holiday exists.
No one had a single day off. Yes Sunday was meant to be a day of rest. But it wasn't.

I’m 32 so hoping I have time to turn this around and start feeling happier in a job again.

I understand you have to do something to get basic needs met, I’m talking more about modern life and how you can work yourself into the ground and STILL not be able to afford basics.

I’ve been applying for contract/remote work but I just don’t hear back from anything. I’m in marketing. Do you have any suggestions on how to get freelancing?

I do often think about what would happen if everyone just stopped working.

No-one working means no electricity. That means nothing will work. There would be no food because shops would not be able to operate.

After the looting, the food would run out very fast. Water supplies would cease.

Everyone would die within a month to six weeks.

edwinbear · 12/02/2026 22:39

I get it OP, I was made redundant at the end of June, started my new job in September. Summer was bloody awesome, the whole of July and August at home, I had a good package I didn’t really touch and whilst I do enjoy my new job, I’d rather be loafing about at home. Most of us would. But the money would have been running out by now and the hassle of having no cash would be worse than the fun of having my life to myself. Do you need to go back into the same sort of job? Can you look for something you might enjoy a bit more?

babyspicydorito · 12/02/2026 22:39

I'm with you OP. We've been brainwashed as a society that it has to be like this. And unless you're public sector for the most part its just to make insanely rich people even richer. Surely there's more to life!! I did the grind for 30+ years. I'm now a very mature student and loving the respite. I'll never work fulltime again - its so misery inducing - I'd rather live in a tent!!

I more so mean office jobs rather than anything absolutely essential

People have always had to put some effort into our survival haven't we?
Unfortunately we have arrived at a point where survival has been replaced by a complex and ever increasing array of wants and needs that we have to meet if we're to participate in the world we live in. This tends to mean spending many hours labouring at tasks that we feel disconnected from in order to earn the money to do so.
Unless you can go off grid, which is a pipe dream unless you've got money to get you started, then you have to find a way to come to terms with it and find the best balance you can. The less you're prepared to have, the less you need to earn. So you might want to think about where the right balance is for you.

Ok then what do you want to do? Personally I got out of the corporate bull shit world at 40. Set up a gardening business and lived off a lot less money until I retired at 55. Having saved as much as possible..now I have a little part time job to pay for cider and chips and I'm happy

Firesparks · 12/02/2026 22:42

I agree it’s rubbish! After kids I lost all my enthusiasm for work

Forty85 · 12/02/2026 22:49

I can't be arsed with it but do it and do a good job when I'm there. I just look forward to the evenings weekends and things I have booked in throughout the year that I can only afford through working. Holidays, weekends and nights away, concerts, festivals, comedy gigs, spending time with family etc.

Also furthering myself professionally doing a professional qualification through work so I can hopefully climb the ladder, earn more and live even better outside of work, that makes working more worthwhile.

When you're in work, presumably you expect to be paid? People who do payroll work in offices. People who work for banks, insurance companies, dvla, nhs, utilities, etc etc. A lot of things would not get done without people working in offices.

I don’t mind what I do tbh, I just don’t want to trek to an office 5 days a week in the dark, to leave in the dark, never see my husband or my dog or have any time to myself.

if I could work a few hours a day and get my basic needs met, I’d be happy. All the other stuff is just extra.

Okay I’m just talking about ALL non essential jobs. They are all made up, as someone pointed out above that most of them are created to make rich people richer.
