to find the Mumsnet quote function incredibly tedious as it's so overused?

And I'm not even talking about quoting the opening post (which has now been sorted in a way).

But ... just so much quoting going on in the discussion! Why can't people address their comments directly to whoever they're quoting. Or manually quote the particular sentence or point they want to agree or disagree with? Or say something like "PP said [short quote or summary] and I think ...".

The threads are so long now and involve so much scrolling.

I was just looking at a thread and quite early on someone made a controversial post of 4 paragraphs long. Within the next page and a half it had been quoted 22 times! 22 times in an hour and a half. It was quoted 7 times in the first 10 minutes.

So boring.

And you can't quote this to be funny in reply because it's the OP. Lol!

OP posts:
Mull · 11/02/2026 09:15

I like the OP quoting various posters in their replies as I often only read the OP’s posts on a thread.

JumpingPumpkin · 11/02/2026 09:19

Agree it's annoying. It could just quote the name and the first line so you can track back to exactly what's being replied to if it's not obvious.

Coffeetimes3 · 11/02/2026 09:22

I think the problem is, its the quickest and easiest way to respond to a specific poster. You're not having to copy and paste a username to @ them or copy and paste specific bits, both of which is fiddly on a phone. Quoting the whole post is one button.

5128gap · 11/02/2026 09:22

If you're re reading quoted posts every time they're quoted I expect it does get boring. Why not just read the response to the quoted post?

5128gap · 11/02/2026 09:23

Duplicate post

KimberleyClark · 11/02/2026 09:23

I hind it far more annoying when someone just tags the poster they are replying to rather than quoting and says I agree so you don’t know what they are agreeing with.

FlowerFairyDaisy · 11/02/2026 09:23

I agree with you; it's not necessary. I usually just copy and paste the excerpt that I am referring to and tag the poster.

Auroraloves · 11/02/2026 09:24

I like being able to see what the comments are responding to. So I like it.

HisNotHes · 11/02/2026 09:27

Yabu. Apart from quoting the op, I like to see the quote so I know what a person is responding to, I don’t have time to scroll back and look for it.

FrozenFebruary · 11/02/2026 09:27

Disagree. It's the easiest way to see what they're replying to. You only need to read the quoted post if you're unsure, you don't need to read it everytime. Just replying @the poster is annoying if you didn't take note of what they said.

Can’t I?

BunfightBetty · 11/02/2026 09:33

It gives the context to the post, so if a poster is replying to a particular comment, that is clear.

It wouldn't be so clear without it, would it? Losing that function would be detrimental to clarity.

What's the problem here for you - surely you can just gloss over the quote if you don't want to read it, and skip to the new comment? Can't take you more than half a second.

5128gap · 11/02/2026 09:35

I think the problem with the methods you suggest over quoting is that it leaves posters open to be misrepresented and taken out of context.
So I might say "I respect people's rights to eat what they like. I've found for me a vegan diet is better healthwise" and i get back
"So @Gap you think that we should all be vegan because 'a vegan diet is better healthwise' Tell that to my GP, I'd be dead because of my food allergies. Typical vegan telling other people what to do"
Unless people scroll back to look at my post, there it stands as though I'm a militant vegan with no respect for other people's needs and preferences.

WellThatsAlrightThen · 11/02/2026 09:35

I prefer the quote as I don’t have to scroll back, sometimes pages, if I want to see what they’re replying to.

I agree - particularly when a response can be a long way down the thread as it means having to scroll back up to find it... particularly if a poster has made a load of posts and you want to know what the response is about.

(Edited to add the second half - clicked too soon).

redskydelight · 11/02/2026 09:37

I wish there was a way to easily quote part of a post (other than copy and pasting, which means you can't see who originally posted).

My main gripe with quotes is people who quote a long post to respond to a single sentence of it.

TittyGajillions · 11/02/2026 09:40

The only time I find it annoying is when someone quotes a post and just writes ' This' underneath it.

BertieBotts · 11/02/2026 09:43

I am always a bit mortified when I write a 3,000 word essay as a reply and someone quotes the whole thing Grin I mean, I'm appreciative that they liked my post enough to want to respond personally to it, but I always feel a bit bad for everyone having to scroll an extra 3 feet.

I feel that quotes ought to be collapsible like the OP on page 2+, or it would be good if you could quote just part of someone's post, even if this had some kind of marker to show it's a partial quote (to prevent people taking PPs out of context). And it would be good if the quote included a direct link to that exact post because sometimes it happens within the context of another discussion and it's not always fully threaded, so you have to look for the timestamp and awkwardly search back.

Sometimes quoting is helpful, esp if responding to something much further back, sometimes it's unnecessary and clutters the thread a bit. Overall I don't mind that it was added, but I do prefer some of the older ways of doing it such as copying and pasting a bit of someone's post, referring to their name, or just continuing the discussion if it's a slow enough moving thread, because the context makes it clear what you're replying to. I know C&P can be tricky on phones, though.

Overtheatlantic · 11/02/2026 09:43

I won’t stop doing it. It provides needed context.

It’s very difficult to follow multiple conversations and points on this forum due to the way it’s styled.

The Reddit approach where you can have multiple replies to comments appearing below is much better
