My Mil is 87. Last year (around September) she was bleeding from her vagina and went to her GP.

The GP referred her to hospital for tests, which she got quickly.

It was cancerous polyps in her womb so she got further tests to ensure they hadn’t spread and was referred for surgery.

Tonight she has been discharged from hospital after numerous tests over the intervening months and a surgery yesterday (keyhole).

She’ll get follow up treatment too.

All NHS, where she has been treated with dignity, respect and kindness.

It might not be what it was due to cuts but it’s still something we should be proud of.

She’ll celebrate her 88th birthday next month, as an OAP in social housing with nothing but her pension, because of the NHS.

AIBU for thinking the NHS is something to be proud of and fight to keep?

Wasn’t actually talking to you, Op, which is why I quoted @Seeingadistance .

But I am not sure that it is off topic. You were saying what a fine job the SNP’s version of the NHS has been for you; I was suggesting that was not my experience.

I thought you liked debate 🤷🏻‍♀️

I never mentioned the SNP. You did. I asked which part of Scotland you live in where you know what most of the country thinks about the NHS.

You didn’t reply.

So you’ve introduced trans people, the SNP, replied to a post about a ferry, brought in Peter Murrell and a court case and then somehow think that you taking the thread off topic and me trying to ignore you means I don’t like debate?

😬😬😬

No, OP, I'm afraid I can't agree that the current state of the NHS (or frankly, even what it was 25 years ago) is something to be proud of. And a mistaken sense of pride is one of the things preventing necessary change.

The swift and appropriate treatment your immediate family have apparently received is not a reflection of the general services nationwide. I'm of the view that it's too far gone to save now...which may or may not have been the long term plan of successive Governments.

I think it was the plan tbh.

@Differentforgirls Actually, had you read your own thread you’d know I live within NHS Grampian area, as I did state early on.
And I did not bring up the SNP initially, you brought up independence and referenda.
But let’s not let any of that stand in the way of your umbrage.

Your next thread, OP, could be about we should be proud of the ferry service because you once got from Ardrossan to Arran and back on a scheduled sailing.

I’m not making a personal attack, just reacting to elements of your posts which hit all the usual SNP, pro-Indy talking points.

Ah but if you share your own experience of when the Ardrossan to Arran ferry sank, destroyed the family car and drowned your dog, OP will get very interested in data points and will ask for receipts while admonishing you for anecdata! 😉

There are a few people on this thread who have a personal grievance about ferries, the SNP, trans people and independence when the thread asked for opinions on the NHS.

Maybe the fear that being online too much leads to poor concentration, a lack of both reading and interpretation skills and a tendency to obsess about an issue isn’t a fear but is, in fact, reality?

No I didn’t. Sorry, I ignored most of your posts when you started on trans people in an NHS thread. Going back to that 👍

We are in a horrible limbo with the NHS. It works in parts but not in others. The trouble is yes you can take private healthcare but that is still a minority in this country and there is no emergency private service.

I wish they would implement a few really quick things which I believe would improve services and that is implement a charge for all 'bookings' be it a GP appointment or a trip to A&E. It could be something quite modest like £20 but I think it would stop alot of time wasters and missed appointments.

At the moment I get repeat perscriptions from my NHS GP but have never actually seen them since I registered. Can't get an appointment it seems for love nor money. Last year I had my first private GP appointment. The doc worked half and half (half in NHS and half in his own private clinic). 20 min appt was £120 or 30 min was £150. Then you have to pay for the perscription as well which for me was £25 for one plus £125 for another (cream for skin condition).

I would far preferred to have been able to make an NHS appointment and pay £20 and then as we get free perscriptions here in Scotland they could start charging a small amount for those too. It would still be heavily subsidised but it would bring in some cash plus cut out wastage. Then they could start improving all the other problems over a longer time period.

Aye, from the OP, who doesn’t seem to understand (at least from their latest post) how discussion forums work.

Discussion evolves as new points are introduced, sometimes they go off on tangents but are still relevant. The Scottish Gov wasting over £1m on removing women’s rights (not trans, yawn), their incompetence with the ferries and how they would manage an Independent Scotland (badly IMO) all links in to running an efficient NHS and the future of it.

One can start a thread but doesn’t mean they own it.

It’s lovely that you hysterically laugh in all your posts criticising how people debate while having no opinion on the thread topic.

Ha ha!

Mind you, if the ferry did sink that wouldn’t have been the main headline. The bigger story would have been that it set sail in the first place!

And on reflection the shit ferry situation isn’t even off-topic as people have missed hospital appointments, including for cancer surgery and treatment because they couldn’t get a ferry to the mainland.

Edited

Well exactly, none of it is off topic when we are talking about £££££ wasted which could have been spent on getting waiting lists down. But I had better stop there as Op prefers I don’t comment on her thread.

As does my thanks to you for joining MN to post on this thread with sarcastic comments and emojis.

You got to it in the end though.

Can I ask, what made you join for this particular thread?

How odd, OP.

Are you searching all of our usernames to find out how long we’ve been on MN? That’s a strange thing to do. It’s an internet forum, where people discuss and comment on issues they are interested in. TwinklyRedFinch has given an outline of her interest in the thread but she didn’t mention joining so she could contribute to the discussion so you must have searched her username.

We already do pay for the NHS via NI.

That is the premium you pay.

The NHS is good/only option for lifesaving treatment. But the NHS is just a back up and fall back for private health. It just can't compete with the standard of private health insurance.

Dumps of hospitals, peeling walls, the lowest possible budget for hospital food which is on par with the budget used for HMP service, makes for a healthcare system of a developing country.

But the people who are not satisfied can go private. The rest of us can use the NHS. Some people use both. NI contributions are a hell of a lot cheaper than private healthcare. Plus the premiums go up insanely after you have eg a heart attack or go through the menopause. Health is the number one reason why people in the US go bankrupt.
