The NHS. We need to fight to keep it.

My Mil is 87. Last year (around September) she was bleeding from her vagina and went to her GP.

The GP referred her to hospital for tests, which she got quickly.

It was cancerous polyps in her womb so she got further tests to ensure they hadn’t spread and was referred for surgery.

Tonight she has been discharged from hospital after numerous tests over the intervening months and a surgery yesterday (keyhole).

She’ll get follow up treatment too.

All NHS, where she has been treated with dignity, respect and kindness.

It might not be what it was due to cuts but it’s still something we should be proud of.

She’ll celebrate her 88th birthday next month, as an OAP in social housing with nothing but her pension, because of the NHS.

AIBU for thinking the NHS is something to be proud of and fight to keep?

No problem. Won’t start a thread again 👍

Perhaps a more meaningful and realistic thread would have pointed out that you have seen the NHS performing well and asking how it can be reformed to ensure that everyone experiences good quality care. If you weren’t already aware of its many failings presumably you wouldn’t have started a thread saying how we should be proud of it based on your very limited experience. If you somehow weren’t aware of how it fails others then you must be now, based on the many posts on this thread.

Honestly if people don’t like the wording of a thread that’s not your problem
I think this thread has brought up an interesting discussion, the points of which are worthy of debate

So much more interesting and informative imo than whether someone should get bottox for an upcoming wedding
Each to their own
Thanks for the thread OP !

As long as they don’t want Botox on the NHS, I’m fine with those threads 😁

??? The SNP are pushing for independence.

Are you being deliberately weird and obtuse or are you just very young/lacking in knowledge and experience?

Yes but no party stands in a referendum. Sorry, I though everyone understood that. Now you do too.

Your last sentence is beneath anyone - young or old.

No one forced you to reply. If you don’t like disagreement maybe forums aren’t for you?

No.
This is what I meant earlier. The NHS you are so keen to fight for is not the NHS most of us experience or even have access to.

And that includes most of us in Scotland. I’d love to live where Op does, it’s like a whole different Scotland from the one I live in.

Nope, just educating you on a basic thing called a referendum. Hope you noted it!

It's so much of a lottery though.
I have a fabulous GP surgery that manages to have appointments without the 8.30 phone thing. They triage well and look after everyone.
Dmum lived 8 miles away and their service was terrible. Literally 2 days a week had no GP and everything she needed anything I had to take her to a and e which was 10 miles in the opposite direction.
When she was really poorly, she was discharged to home without telling me "she had her front door key" and I found her on the floor, feet from the chair that they had put her in.
Exactly what would have happened to her if she didn't have relatives i have no idea. Presumably she would have eventually died there and saved the bother

Seeingadistance · 13/02/2026 12:59

Your next thread, OP, could be about we should be proud of the ferry service because you once got from Ardrossan to Arran and back on a scheduled sailing.

I’m not making a personal attack, just reacting to elements of your posts which hit all the usual SNP, pro-Indy talking points.

No you are again making a personal attack but it’s probably just you.

Anyway, my son who went to out of hours last night called the GP this morning and has an appointment at 3.25pm today.

Or maybe I’m fantasising!

I’m going off for the day to catch up with, ironically, “The Good Doctor”. 😆

yeah, well we have an election this year, and Murrell is back in court, so I dare say the SNP need some drums banging.

Wasn’t actually talking to you, Op, which is why I quoted @Seeingadistance .

But I am not sure that it is off topic. You were saying what a fine job the SNP’s version of the NHS has been for you; I was suggesting that was not my experience.

I thought you liked debate 🤷🏻‍♀️

C152 · 13/02/2026 13:38

No, OP, I'm afraid I can't agree that the current state of the NHS (or frankly, even what it was 25 years ago) is something to be proud of. And a mistaken sense of pride is one of the things preventing necessary change.

The swift and appropriate treatment your immediate family have apparently received is not a reflection of the general services nationwide. I'm of the view that it's too far gone to save now...which may or may not have been the long term plan of successive Governments.

Your view is consistent with the link to the survey I posted earlier.
