Flushing the toilet after every wee.

10 litres per flush is a huge amount of water per wee (that's what I believe our cistern holds).
I don't think it's necessary to flush after every wee. My friend thinks I'm tight and unhygienic.
What's your view...
Are you a 'if it's yellow let it mellow'...I am reasonable
Or...'eww you filthy sod'..I am unreasonable

Fill up a bottle of water leave it in the cistern, or put a brick in it - something to take up space. You will use less water per flush that way.

Not at night, because of neighbours, but, yes, every time, during the day.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 09/02/2026 12:13

You can get bags that you put in your cistern, which apparently save water when you flush.

I flush every time, because of the horrendous limescale build-up otherwise. Also, I did not appreciate the smell of male pee in the bathroom when I was growing up!

BauhausOfEliott · 09/02/2026 12:27

I don't think it's unhygienic not to flush after a wee. I just don't want to look at, or smell, anyone's old piss, so in our house we flush every time.

But if it doesn't bother you and your partner, I don't think you're doing anything wrong by not flushing.

Provided you're the only people in the house, anyway. Don't inflict your piss on visitors.

RoseWineLover · 09/02/2026 13:08

So many comments about the smell. If your bathroom is stinking because the toilet hasn't been flushed then there's something wrong with your wee/kidneys!! I flush after every 3/4 wees and it certainly doesn't 'stink' in my bathroom!

LifeisLemons · 09/02/2026 13:12

No, only flush any of the toilets when necessary. Wee doesn’t stink?

Rarely have visitors but obviously would flush every time then.

Maddy70 · 09/02/2026 13:23

I can smell a wee from the other bathroom in my house so I am very sensitive to smells. Absolutely flush every time

TheBeatenGeneration · 09/02/2026 13:38

A toilet is there to have piss and shit and god know what else in. And it's all pretty grubby beyond that u-bend. I think once upon a time I would have yelped at a shit stain. These days I don't really care.

In our house we generally leave wees, and flush poos. The only downside is, is that in our area (hardish water) leaving piss does seem to encourage faster build-ups of scale.

I tend to give the toilet a small wash and clean every other day anyway. Nothing much more than cleaning the seat and scrubbing the bowl.

I'm sure we save something on our water bill. Remember you are usually charged a proportional rate for waste from your intake.

In the summer I probably piss in the garden 2 out of 3 times. It's all good for the plants.

I mean…sure they’re my kids but their skin still has dirt and bacteria that sloughs off into the bath water!

I get regular utis anyway, I cannot imagine it is in any way hygienic to bathe in someone’s used bath water, even if that someone is a small child? I mean, some times I have a quick shower or strip wash to save water, but I could not use someone else’s used water. I find that weirder than the no flushing thing from a hygiene perspective.

But would you feel the same if we bathed at the same time?

Soontobesingles · 09/02/2026 13:49

Leopardspota · 09/02/2026 13:44

Yes, I don't think you get properly clean sitting in someone else's bathwater/with someone else in the bath. I feel the bacteria would be an infection risk for me. Obviously, I have occasionally bathed with my kids over the years, but would shower after, or strip wash, because I would not feel sufficiently clean.

I don’t really Understand your point. Why is the dirt and bacteria from my own body ok,
but not from my baby?

I'm honestly shocked by this thread. Every other thread on here about domestic habits, I'm always on the "grim" side. I only change my sheets every few weeks, clothes get a few wears, I rarely use bleach, use cold water for laundry, etc. But I've never considered not flushing the toilet at any time, and if my kids forget, it absolutely stinks.

It's pretty disgusting your sheets are not washed often.
They will be full of dead skin scales and god knows what else.

If your kids' wee stinks they aren't drinking enough.
Wee itself has very little smell.
Stale wee on the floor or carpets yes because it's changed by the air.

It's the ammonia in it that has a smell and if it's concentrated it smells more.

Using this logic, you wouldn't get clean in your own bathwater, and you'd still be at risk of infection from your own bacteria.

Which is why I only shower. I consider baths to be filthy.

bobby81 · 09/02/2026 15:40

We always flush. It’s never crossed my mind not to!

WeAllHaveWings · 09/02/2026 16:35

Dh and ds do not drink enough water to make leaving the loo unflushed a pleasant prospect.

Its not something I think about really (water isn’t metered here)

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 09/02/2026 16:45

What are you doing with your toilet paper? If we don't flush our toilet it gets blocked really easily. I can't imagine doing 3 or 4 weeks before flushing, unless I then want to spend 20 minutes unblocking the toilet.
DH doesn't flush if it's just a wee and I find it disgusting. Apart from anything else it smells, especially if he goes late at night and it's left until the next morning.

Doggymummar · 09/02/2026 20:16

I don't think anyone is talking about going weeks, that is gross. 8 flush when I go as I us3 paper, DH doesn't use paper so he doesn't flush. So it's every other wee

Soontobesingles · 09/02/2026 20:37

Well there’s a limit surely? I generally wouldn’t have a bath if I was absolutely filthy, a bath is a luxury for me. But my limit is generally my own sweat, sloughed off skin etc is the price of having a bath - other people’s not so much.

Spent some time in Bermuda, where they harvest rainwater as there’s no fresh water on the islands. They cope well enough there not flushing after every use and not having a running tap whilst cleaning teeth. A masterclass in water conservation.

Yes! I lived there for 10 years and posted earlier on this.

Evaka · 08/02/2026 21:10

I voted wrong, you're not unreasonable.

I flush every few wees when it's just the two of us. Also keep bath water for a day and use that to flush. Stops the bath guilt!

If taking a bath came with guilt of needing to keep the water to flush the toilet, I’d really not bother.

RobertaFirmino · 11/02/2026 21:14

If your cistern is a 10 litre, it must be quite old. Modern bogs have cisterns with a 6 litre capacity and dual flush - 4 litres for wee, the full 6 litres for poo. Maybe think about upgrading?

MusicWasMyFirstLove · 11/02/2026 21:16

ScarlettSarah · 08/02/2026 20:33

Flush every time. Disgusting not to.

It's really not.
It's environmentally unfriendly.
You can close the lid on the toilet and open a window if you eat a lot of asparagus.

Thanks. I've asked partner as I'd not realised there's dual flush so I'll use that going forward

Flush every single time and always ensure I leave it how I’d like to find it! Even 2 year old GD flushes every time as “we like toilets clean don’t we”! Can’t think of anything worse than a toilet with the previous users waste in it.
