it?

Carlie97 · 07/02/2026 20:04

It's just an abbreviation. Nothing twee about it. When people use it I don't think they think twice about it meaning 'darling husband's whatever. You're being very unreasonable.

Or just S, D, H. The D everything pisses me off too.

Colourscolours · 07/02/2026 20:06

There was another thread along similar lines to this very recently. Is this the beginnings of a campaign?

If you don't want to use the abbreviations then don't. But if others want to use them then surely that's up to them?

Personally it's such an MN " thing" I really like it. Adds a bit of individuality to the site.

LoveWine123 · 07/02/2026 20:06

Agree OP. Especially when people say DH and then proceed to list all the ways in which said husband is not actually a darling at all.

Pancakeflipper · 07/02/2026 20:07

I like it. Saves time not typing daughter, father, mother, step- daughter blah blah.

Designless · 07/02/2026 20:07

Agree op super weird particularly when talking about an abstract child

"There was a DC in the park and"

Maybe they're not darling to anyone for a start

Them. Don’t overthink

I like overthinking.

CautiousVisitor · 07/02/2026 20:09

Um, welcome to Mumsnet...? The abbreviations have been used here for yeeeears and as a PP pointed out it's part of the identity of the site.

In those cases, it stands for Dick Head

If you've been here long enough then it is normal.

ThatsRoughBuddy · 07/02/2026 20:12

Are you new to the internet?

It’s a thing on many sites not just Mumsnet. There's shorthand on most large websites!

1000StrawberryLollies · 07/02/2026 20:12

Do you usually arrive and introduce yourself by issuing a bunch of orders about how people should speak and behave? I bet you're really popular at parties. We'll talk how we like, thanks. If you don't like it, the door's that way --->

mismomary · 07/02/2026 20:15

Hello newbie. Get over yourself. Don't use the abbreviations if you don't want to. But you will be the one looking odd.

GardenCovent · 07/02/2026 20:16

Who is forcing you to use it op?
If you don’t like the abbreviations you don’t need to use them.
Ive been here for over 20 years and it doesnt bother me if people say DD or daughter.
Im lucky that ive other things going on in my life that i dont need to get worked up about what some random stranger on the internet calls their children on an internet forum

Needmorelego · 07/02/2026 20:16

I'm suprised Mumsnet haven't changed their name to DMumsnet 😂
I agree.
It's just daft.
Ddaft.

Love it! It’s how I will be reading it in my head from now on 😅

GalaxyJam · 07/02/2026 20:17

You’re definitely, 100% the first person to ever start a thread saying it’s cringey/weird.

Or not.

Definitely not unique to Mumsnet, widely used on forums everywhere!

Newbutoldfather · 07/02/2026 20:17

It has been around this site for at least a decade, but it is still unnecessary and twee. I don’t use the abbreviations.

it’s almost as if phones don’t have predictive text. Your phone will suggest the full word a lot quicker than you can type out the capitalised abbreviation.

Yes this.

If you don't like the way the site works then don't use it. Personally I hate all the (M27)/(F29) and up voting/down voting on reddit that I don't use reddit. I don't t go on there and tell the users they should change their usage.
