It's Internet shorthand that existed before Mumsnet. HTH.

Or just S, D, H. The D everything pisses me off too.

You don't have to use the 'D'. It's not compulsory.

Thank you for your feedback.

It has been around this site for at least a decade, but it is still unnecessary and twee. I don’t use the abbreviations.

it’s almost as if phones don’t have predictive text. Your phone will suggest the full word a lot quicker than you can type out the capitalised abbreviation.

It’s been around since the site started over 25 years ago! Before predictive text, well before smartphones!

Personally I think referring to things as 'cringe' makes people sound like they latched on to their 15 year olds favourite expression several years ago, then forgot to let go. It annoys me quite irrationally.
So we all have our cross to bear.

Even worse when people add numbers but some use the age and some use the number of children eg. I’ve seen dd6, meaning six years old or also meaning the sixth child.

TamzinGrey · 07/02/2026 20:21

Can we still say D Cat and D Dog ?

PenelopeAsks · 07/02/2026 20:22

I’ve been on MN for 18 years. It has always been the same. If you don’t like it, I’m sure you can find somewhere else that suits.

They are my favourites!
They never fail to make me smile.

Definitely not unique to Mumsnet, widely used on forums everywhere!

Really? I didn't know that.

The only other forum I sometimes look at is Reddit and they are definitely not a Reddit thing.

When it first started phones didn’t have predictive texts. Infact you couldn’t view Mumsnet on your phone it was on a pc so it made sense to use abbreviations

DD6 always used to mean 6th daughter. DD (6) would be a 6 year old.

It’s just shorthand, no big deal. Don’t use it if you don’t like it 🤷‍♀️ I still read CF as cunty fucks though rather than cheeky fuckers

godmum56 · 07/02/2026 20:38

I first found it on Flylady and the Flylady forum

TheMostHolySunflower · 07/02/2026 20:38

I just told DDog about this post and he reckons you must be new to MN...

pouletvous · 07/02/2026 20:55
