To want to just burn everything we own

Scabies. DS first brought it home from uni last year and he has suffered for 9 months (doctors missed it for the first 3 months and took them another 6 to prescribe the correct dose of Ivermectin. This only happened because eventually (no idea how the rest of us swerved it for so long) DS then caught it at Xmas but they wouldn’t give ivermectin first had to try permethrin. Whole family treated washing and tumble drying everything or bagging it for seven days, hoover everywhere, steam cleaning furniture. Repeat the process a week later.

As expected the permethrin didn’t work for DS2 but the ivermectin has worked for DS1 so now DS2 has ivermectin and again the rest of us are having to do permethrin. So another two weeks of changing beds and towels every day for three days, bagging, washing, tumble drying and steaming. Tried to push for us to all have ivermectin but no go from the doctor.

So stressed and overwhelmed keeping up with the washing and bagging clothes. Have spent a fortune on extra clothes, bedding and towels as jus can’t get it all washed and dried for everyone to have a clean set of everything 3 days in a row and the repeat a week later.

DH is fucking useless at remembering to bag his stuff and refuses to buy more work trousers and I suspect is re wearing things rather than changing and bagging (he has no symptoms at all never had to be fair but still follow the bloody protocol to be safe!)

I’m feeling murderous right now. Please tell me anyone who’s had to do this that it goes eventually. Aside from the washing and cleaning nightmare DS1 has really suffered over the last 9 months mentally and DS2 has scratched his legs to the point of bleeding and looks so down.

That sounds awful, so sorry OP.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 06/02/2026 09:02

Thanks @ScoobyDooDooh i had no idea people still got scabies until last year really. Managed to get the kids to late teens without so much as nits or worms so thought we were home and dry on this sort of thing!

How old are the kids?

Could you all go and live in separate hotel rooms for a few days - scabies don’t survive long on clothes etc.

readingismycardio · 06/02/2026 09:25

My friends kids’ (all 4 of them!) got scabies a few years ago. Let me ask her what she did exactly and I’ll come back

They’re 18 and 21 so That will be the next plan if this round of treatment isn’t successful. We’d need to change bedding though every day for three nights so would possibly have to hotel hop each night.

This article was recently in the Guardian - scabies is becoming more common, you are not alone.
The sudden rise of scabies: ‘I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy’ | Infectious diseases | The Guardian

I saw that the other day. It’s definitely done the rounds among DS’s uni friends. I imagine there’s probably more people that we don’t know about: it’s hardly something you declare loudly!

OMG you poor thing - I caught it (probably according to my doctor) on an orthopaedic ward when I fractured my wrist. First thought it was a reaction to antibiotics and so just kept waiting for it to go. By the time I hadn't really slept for three nights and turned up a crying mess at the doctor - I had it all over - the skin between my fingers was peeling off - and I looked like I had a kind of flat chickenpox. I would break my wrist all over again rather than get scabies back. So, I had the Invermectin and the lotion and the spray - all the washing, bagging, etc - just the same as you. Partner got treated. It will go - but you must think of other places = I sprayed my cloth kindle cover, for instance. I hope you get rid of it soon - if your husband got it, he would soon get with the programme - unless you've had it, you can't imagine how awful it is. The itching is relentless and so deep. Sending much love and hope it goes soon x

What spray did they give you? I’ve been hoovering and steaming mattresses, carpets and sofa’s but haven’t heard of a spray

BTW there is an epidemic of it apparently - I am in France and my doctor said she had seen two cases of it in the same week I had it !! It should really lose its stigma - you can pick it up (unfortunately) so easily and not realise - it takes a few days for the mites to start to burrow (ugh).

Frenchlady14 · 06/02/2026 09:38

It was aFrench make - can't remember the name but I got another type from Amazon as well (I will never be without it!!) - It is called Fulgator Special Parasites and Acariens - it is the French Version but I'm sure there is an English version on Amazon UK if you look for it - or ask your Pharmacy. I was given two large cans of the first lot - sprayed all carpets and rugs and sofa cushions and anything fabric - took off sofa cushions and sprayed underneath. Inside shoes and anything fabric-y that you can't wash.

Btrsun10 · 06/02/2026 09:43

Its soul destroying!

My poor dd's bf brought it home from uni.
Between our house and his house, we have been through the 2 weeks never ending tablet taking, creaming, vacuuming, washing, bagging routine twice.
I seriously hope that they are both free of it now.
Luckily, no one else in either family has shown symptoms but that does not mean you dont have them and one cannot be complacent!

I was advised to also vacuum the cars thoroughly, including headrests. Seams of mattresses etc etc. Anything that could not be washed was bagged up for at least 7 days - advice is 3 days but I needed to be sure!

In the end, I just vacuumed everywhere over and over again.
Remember to throw away the bag from the vacuum cleaner each time as they can remain living in there for a few days.

I feel for you and hope you can get through it.

Wouldn't you possibly be infecting the hotel rooms though?

CantBreathe90 · 06/02/2026 09:54

Ooof, we had recurrent bum worms, which was bad enough.

All the nail cutting, hot washing laundry and early morning showers did very little in the end, because they were at pre-school, eating all the vile, infested sand and playdough 🙃 Maybe burn the school and any local softplays too, if you're doing your house anyway?

Seriously though I feel for you OP and hope you get it sorted x

CantBreathe90 · 06/02/2026 09:57

Sorry just saw their ages - burn the university and accommodation, along with local nightclubs and any sports facilities.

Paganpentacle · 06/02/2026 09:59

Bear in mind that the itching persists after the scabies are dead... its an allergic response to mite saliva....

TorturedParentsDepartment · 06/02/2026 10:01

It is a fucking nightmare - we've been fighting it since about October in this house - we seem to be on the edge of winning the battle but it's relentless.

Frenchlady14 · 06/02/2026 10:05

Yes, it is true the itching carries on for a good few days and you can feel like you still have it. But, the marks on your skin go a bit darker. I went on holiday after I just got rid of it and swam in the sea. Aaargghh the pain as the salt water got into the skin - but my skin cleared up very quickly after. So, yes, burn everything you own if it's not going away - drive to the coast - burn the car and sit in the sea for a good few hours.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 06/02/2026 10:10

Thank you that’s brilliant. Just ordered some

OneMintWasp · 06/02/2026 10:13

Have you treated your car if you have one. Office chair (on the quiet!). Coats, bobble hats, shoes. Sorry if I have missed that one an earlier post.

OneMintWasp · 06/02/2026 10:14

We have had it! We ordered the treatments from Chemist 4 U and spoke to the pharmacist to get it. Means you pay a bit more but you dont need to see the GP for it that way.

BunfightBetty · 06/02/2026 10:15

Oh no, OP, DH had scabies years ago as a student, and he still talks about how awful it was decades later. I can't imagine what it must be like to deal with it for a whole family. You must be spending your life dealing with laundry, let alone the awful symptoms.

Can you afford a private doctor appointment, to cut to the chase and get Ivermectin prescribed for the rest of you now?

thecomedyofterrors · 06/02/2026 10:16

It’s awful. We had it as a family twice last year. You have to be so intense and intensional about bagging clothes washing hot etc. Then liberally apply the cream twice etc. Yes, it was a nightmare and I don’t ever want it back!!

Grumpymumma · 06/02/2026 10:51

Hi, you have my sympathy, I’ve had it. What I didn’t realise at the time was the itching is an immune response, which you still get after they die, so you may be all clear but still itching and it takes a short while for that to stop (I did back to back treatments because I don’t know this). If I caught it again I would definitely go and stay somewhere else for a few days post treatment to break the cycle.
