Scabies. DS first brought it home from uni last year and he has suffered for 9 months (doctors missed it for the first 3 months and took them another 6 to prescribe the correct dose of Ivermectin. This only happened because eventually (no idea how the rest of us swerved it for so long) DS then caught it at Xmas but they wouldn’t give ivermectin first had to try permethrin. Whole family treated washing and tumble drying everything or bagging it for seven days, hoover everywhere, steam cleaning furniture. Repeat the process a week later.

As expected the permethrin didn’t work for DS2 but the ivermectin has worked for DS1 so now DS2 has ivermectin and again the rest of us are having to do permethrin. So another two weeks of changing beds and towels every day for three days, bagging, washing, tumble drying and steaming. Tried to push for us to all have ivermectin but no go from the doctor.

So stressed and overwhelmed keeping up with the washing and bagging clothes. Have spent a fortune on extra clothes, bedding and towels as jus can’t get it all washed and dried for everyone to have a clean set of everything 3 days in a row and the repeat a week later.

DH is fucking useless at remembering to bag his stuff and refuses to buy more work trousers and I suspect is re wearing things rather than changing and bagging (he has no symptoms at all never had to be fair but still follow the bloody protocol to be safe!)

I’m feeling murderous right now. Please tell me anyone who’s had to do this that it goes eventually. Aside from the washing and cleaning nightmare DS1 has really suffered over the last 9 months mentally and DS2 has scratched his legs to the point of bleeding and looks so down.

Can you afford to go to a private GP to get the proper full on lotion? Constant retreating it is costing NHS more in the long run and prolonging the issue

Happyjoe · 06/02/2026 11:01

Huge sympathies. I had a flea infestation once and that was bad enough. So much cleaning, washing, it's non-stop.
Hope you get on top of it soon.

Ebok1990 · 06/02/2026 11:04

We had it in the house (bed hoping university step child). Amongst other measures, I bought ivermectin wash for cattle!! We all showered in it. I'll see if I can find it. It actually smelt really nice and was quite oily, so your skin felt moisturised afterwards, as a bonus!!
I can't find the exact wash. I'm not at home at the mo but I'll have a look later when I'm back.

rocketmaaaan · 06/02/2026 11:10

I have used ivermectin for rosacea, I bought it privately from Superdrug. I am also on some rosacea Facebook groups and some people, especially in the States, use horsepaste! Which contains ivermectin. I’m not advocating it as I have no idea how safe it is, but apparently it’s a lot cheaper. Good luck.

Kitsmummy · 06/02/2026 11:30

I used benzyl benzoate from eBay. It's a horse treatment and after a year of trying everything it was the only thing that got rid of it. You have to make it into a lotion (add hair conditioner to it). I eventually made the lotion up stronger than you're supposed to. The top of my legs were numb for a few days (!!!)but honestly it cleared it after EVERYTHING else had failed.

Goldfsh · 06/02/2026 11:34

God I'm so sorry for you (and others!).

I'm actually a bit terrified of this happening to me. I think I would go insane.

Wetcoatsandmudagain · 06/02/2026 11:36

I live surrounded by people in their 90’s who have lived with open fires, Rayburn, Wood burners their entire lives. Only source of heat and hot water. They are as fit as fiddles. I worry far more about the chemicals in our food, pollution in our tap water, car exhaust’s, cleaning chemicals, scented candles etc than I do about a bit of wood smoke. I do appreciate it’s difficult if a neighbour is irresponsible with what they burn and therefore creating unnecessary smoke and pollution but burning properly dried wood on a properly maintained stove is probably a much lower risk than what you are eating and drinking.

Thoughts and prayers. Worked at a pub and we had a scabies outbreak because everyone was shagging one another. I’d already paired off with now DH so we were fine but it was a nightmare for all involved and it’s not like we could put a blanket ban on shagging your co workers when you employ mostly students.

i’ve been using horse paste on my face for years for rosacea, it killed the mites and was cheap. Would highly recommend it as a way of accessing ivermectin.

Fluffyhoglets · 06/02/2026 12:52

We were lucky then when eldest had it. Took a while to get diagnosed but the two doses of permethrin cream for everyone - and the bedding changes worked well - no one else in the house caught it thankfully.
Horrible for eldest though and doctor couldn't diagnose it and sent us off to sexual health clinic - and they identified it!

Squirrelchops1 · 06/02/2026 12:57

I know this is of no help but there's be a real rise in scabies. Both in private residences but also care homes. I wonder if the blighters are becoming more resilient to the meds.

your DH knows this and he is still not fully participating? That‘s awful. It shows a lack of care towards you and your sons and he is (imo) neglecting his duty as a father and husband.

Seriously considering banning the teens from having girlfriends until they have their own homes. I had no idea how bad it could be!

That’s a whole other thread in itself unfortunately. Weaponised incompetence at best best and a complete lack of respect or concern at worst. He nods along with all the right words and agreement when I explain what needs doing and will help if given explicit instructions and yet everyday acts like he didn’t know what he was meant to do with his clothes or that he couldn’t possibly postpone cleaning the gutters/digging up the driveway at the weekend because he needs work trousers and “ oh yeah no they haven’t been bagged. Do I need to bag them?”

I would try Benzyl Benzoate, it’s the original mite treatment for people and is now sold as a treatment for horse mites. Buy it from Vio vet.
it is also an ingredient in sudocrem so that might help.

this may be „weaponised incompetence“. But he’s weaponising it to actively contribute to your and your shared children’s misery. I’d really struggle to not consider this abuse.

So no, YANBU. All of this sounds absolutely miserable. You’re still standing and trying your best. That’s genuinely impressive! And no, burning every „not properly bagged“ item of clothing would be completely reasonable!!

wfhwfh · 06/02/2026 13:39

Scabies are relatively easy to get rid of. They are not like bed-bugs. I got them years ago in a uni shared house and we hot washed all bedding and towels and used some sort of lotion in the shower and got it cleared easily enough.

Agree with posters above that your husband is not behaving appropriately. If unconnected students in a shared house can cooperate to solve the problem surely he can do his best for his own family.

I feel sorry for your son too having suffered it for months. It took me a few weeks of misery before I identified the problem - that’s often the tough bit; working out what it is. But once you have, it really should be easy to clear.

I had scabies years ago. Went to the GP and was told it was my imagination.

Saw a different GP and was given some stuff that looked like a thin calamine lotion that I had to paint all over from my neck down.
I needed a second dose.
It was gone after the second dose.

Wouldn't you possibly be infecting the hotel rooms though?

That's what I thought !

schnubbins · 06/02/2026 13:51

My son and his girlfriend came back with it after a holiday in South America . By the time it surfaced my husband and I had left for our holiday and he had said nothing . DS calls me on holiday describing the itch and as a nurse I knew straight away what it was .By the time I came home it was too late .They had slept in all the clean and empty beds in the house ( because of the sleepless nights in the middle of a very hot summer )and thrown his used clothes in my laundry room ! You could have heard me screaming at the North Pole .I had to wash everything in the whole house and then get an appointment with the Dermatologist (not easy at the best of times )and get the whole family treated. It reminded me of all the times we had nits when they were small .You have my sympathies OP .I hope it gets resolved soon.

WhoGivesACrepe · 06/02/2026 13:53

Caught it from my boyfriend who caught it from his housemate- was a nightmare trying to get both households clear and not re-infect. We did it after some months- doing what everyone’s said including cleaning hard surfaces and crevices like keyboards / phones. What I would say is we thought the treatments were failing because we were still getting new tiny bumps on hands in particular, but from online forums realised it was actually a reaction to the treatment. We all decided to stop treatment and see if they went away- they did and we were in fact clear

This is what we did in the end after the GP prescribed creams weren't working. My DH smothered himself in it! 😅 It worked!

I wish this had been true in our case. I suspect the delay in doctors properly diagnosing and treating ds1 has been what’s made it such an ongoing issue. Even after the diagnosed it and he kept going back they said “oh it must be something unrelated we will refer you to dermatology” (that was months ago and no appointment forthcoming). He’s only got the proper treatment of two rounds of ivermectin as ds2 now has it and he really had to push for the two rounds as she only wanted to give him one again (which didn’t work last time).
