To be stunned that there were more births in Nigeria in 2024 than the entirety of Europe and Russia combined?

I knew the birth rate was declining in western societies but that figure sounds crazy.

It’ll be interesting to see if there is a change in society over the coming decades towards young immigrants from abroad.

western countries will be fighting over them.

@lazybone1because this post said over the coming decades.

At the risk of having my arse handed to me on a plate, it does piss me off when parents choose to have children in such terrible circumstances. Gaza for example. I heard on the radio about how much babies are suffering in Gaza. I did think wtf are they doing having babies in such circumstances in the first place!

I agree, but we know that the men of Gaza don’t consider women to be human. I doubt the women have a choice.

lazybone1 · 06/02/2026 11:19

@EasternStandard I read it from now going forward because as I said countries are already trying to attract youngsters.

I came across this website - data for each country displayed visually as a pyramid.

https://www.populationpyramids.org/nigeria

"The population [of Nigeria] has grown by 88% since 2000 - adding 111.1 million people in just 24 years"

No wonder I keep getting those calls

Gaza barely has a functioning hospital. it's not going to have birth control. However saying the entire population should refrain from having children and have no right to family life or love because they are enduring a genocide is basically ethnic cleansing. It is a choice that Israel won't allow proper shelters into Gaza and give these kids a fighting chance. Also their deaths won't be tallied in Israels official figures for deaths they've caused.

Over time fewer will be needed but even now we’ve got a lot of young people out of work. That should be improved.

What’s the child mortality rate?

Over 10% of children in Nigeria never see their 5th birthday.

Thank you!
I love websites like this.
Have a look at South Korea in comparison.

me too! I like that India’s graph looks exactly like the dome on the Taj Mahal

Some of these are fascinating - China’s graph does rather highlight what happens when the state artificially dicks around with things doesn’t it?

also - the Maldives one is really interesting - why such a massive male dominance in the younger age groups?

It is fascinating. India's TFR is now 1.98- thanks to the education of women, I think- and Nigeria's is 4.4.

Sweetiedarling7 · 06/02/2026 12:08

Sad for all the women dealing with too many pregnancies. Cuts in aid affect contraception so will only make this worse.

It looks like pp has linked a AI in five years article so that’s a start. But more widely the dc born today will be entering the workforce in twenty odd years when it’ll be even more advanced. The workforce needs will be very different.

On that note we need to work out how to extract tax if it’s not from young people working, to the same extent anyway.

I think there will be fewer office jobs but an increase in caring/ healthcare jobs as the population ages. I do wonder if AI / helper robots will ever become advanced enough to safely toilet/ bathe / dress an elderly frail person as I think that would be a game changer in terms of long term labour requirements.

We will be bringing back the immigrants again in another decade.

Eyewhisker · 06/02/2026 12:20

It is fascinating and means that the world will look very different in 40 years time than it does now. A much higher percentage of the world will be in Africa and the Middle East, much lower in Asia, Europe and America.

There is a lag between reducing infant mortality/improved medicine and family size adapting. That is why it is so important to improve women's education and women's rights at the same time as providing aid.

Coffeeandbooks88 · 06/02/2026 12:23

I suspect many Nigerian women would probably want to access contraception so they can control the size of their families.

Ponoka7 · 06/02/2026 12:29

MyThreeWords · 06/02/2026 08:33

Why is it concerning? I mean, obviously the increasing global population is concerning, but why should we be concerned by the relative increase in one part of the world compared with another?

Because parts of the world is being unhabitable, so they will want to move to countries that are. The population rise thise causes in England and most of Europe can't be sustained. It used to be a goal to get to the USA, that's been taken away, so people will look to Europe.

I wonder how things will go now there's a population shift towards the Muslim religion. Many Nigerians find it worrying. I mix within the Nigerian communities, but they are Yoruba and Catholic. Their families aren't faring well under the shift, lands have been stolen and women's rights are a constant fight.

TallulahBetty · 06/02/2026 13:07

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 06/02/2026 10:18

The population is almost 50/50 Muslim/Christian. The birth rate is higher in the Muslim population but it’s also pretty high in the Christian population, much higher than the birth rate in Europe.

Not surprised. Both religions will indoctrinate people that contraception is a sin.

I worked with women who was the third only child in a row and only had one daughter herself, our Nigerian colleague used to tell her she needed to have another child to "break the curse" 😂

In seriousness though, the differences in postpartum care and general help were mind blowing; the Nigerian lady was made to rest properly after giving birth, had loads of family help, extended family were all very close, loads of emotional support etc. Obviously this is only one example but I really don't blame people in the west for having smaller families.

Yes, there is plenty of evidence that actually women in the west would like to have more kids than they do. Not that they want to have 10, or even 5, but many would like two rather than one, or three rather than two.

But the costs and lack of support, and just lack of time, mean they don't.

So in a way we've chased short term financial productivity and sacrificed longer term economic viability

Do they? In the UK most Nigerian Christians don't have 4+ kids, they use contraception. it’s always been ’go forth and multiply’ but never heard anything anti-contraception for married couples.

I can’t speak for Muslim families but I don’t think the majority are churning them out either.

Do catholics these days still not use contraception? Only the very strict ones would follow that I imagine. MAP would still be forbidden by most religions.

They will in those countries, yes. I have relatives that have lived there. It's not just the general religion, is is the culture, the pastors, the society

It’s actually lowering in the Christian side but as a whole just like other countries in Africa as Angola , they are very high indeed .
