To be stunned that there were more births in Nigeria in 2024 than the entirety of Europe and Russia combined?

I knew the birth rate was declining in western societies but that figure sounds crazy.

When I was young, everyone was young and fit. Many people died in their 60’s and 70’s. Now we all look old (small town with high average age). When I go to places with Unis and I see lots of young people I feel energised. Go young of Nigeria, you are our future.

It’s very concerning.

What concerns you? The falling BR here, or the growing BR there?

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 06/02/2026 08:46

What’s the child mortality rate?

MidnightPatrol · 06/02/2026 08:48

soupyspoon · 06/02/2026 08:39

Exactly, the biggest uncomfortable truth for society is that given the choice, women dont necessarily want children. Its not necessarily to do with wider society and the social system they're in either, not everyone wants the physical and mental drain of being a parent.

Men have been more overt about this since day dot, but women are now able to say the same.

In my experience men are often rather keen on the idea of lots of children - they just don’t actually want to do the day-to-day work involved!

I don’t think anyone of either sex is that keen on a life of domestic drudgery and no independence to pursue their own interests - and for women, the more children you have the less likely you are to achieve that.

I came across this website - data for each country displayed visually as a pyramid.

https://www.populationpyramids.org/nigeria

"The population [of Nigeria] has grown by 88% since 2000 - adding 111.1 million people in just 24 years"

Thank you!
I love websites like this.
Have a look at South Korea in comparison.

Secretseverywhere · 06/02/2026 08:50

It’s a surprising statistic as a headline I grant you. It is a very young population, birth rate is 4.5, majority of the population is under 30.

2/3 of the world has a birth rate under replacement value. It’ll be interesting to see if there is a change in society over the coming decades towards young immigrants from abroad.

HopSpringsEternal · 06/02/2026 08:16

Population growth slows down in more developed countries. Educating women and supporting them into work reduces. As does preventing child mortality and ensuring the availability of contraception and sex education.

Most of these line up with the development of a country.

And the fact that people simply cannot afford more children despite desperately wanting them.

UnemployedNotRetired · 06/02/2026 09:04

Populations include
Nigeria - 240million
Indonesia - 290m
Ethiopia - 140m
Egypt - 120m

We just know less about the world.

And many can afford them, but desperately don’t want them!!

Unorganisedchaos2 · 06/02/2026 09:04

I worked with women who was the third only child in a row and only had one daughter herself, our Nigerian colleague used to tell her she needed to have another child to "break the curse" 😂

In seriousness though, the differences in postpartum care and general help were mind blowing; the Nigerian lady was made to rest properly after giving birth, had loads of family help, extended family were all very close, loads of emotional support etc. Obviously this is only one example but I really don't blame people in the west for having smaller families.

Dgll · 06/02/2026 09:12

The old fashioned narrative that it is women who are desperate to have the babies while the men reluctantly agree in order to keep the little woman happy, has been proven to be a big fat lie.

freakingscared · 06/02/2026 09:16

Why are you surprised ? Nigeria has a huge extremist Muslim population who sees women as a means to an end so having kids is literally what they are expected to do without much say in it or given any other options . It’s very sad indeed

Damnloginpopup · 06/02/2026 09:31

Nigeria has the sixth largest population in the world.

This is true. In most m/f couples I know, it was either both people in the couple who wanted children - or it was the man. Not many couples had the woman being desperate to have children and not the man.

Even my own DH was desperate for children. Not to begin with, but when we were in our late 20s and had been married several years. When we met he didn't want them, when we got married he was like 'maybe one day we'll have them' and several years after, he was like 'so when do ya reckon we should start trying then?' I said 'errr, I'm not ready yet.' (I was always 50-50, like maybe one day but I don't know when.) Most women I knew who were around my age had kids already (my cousins, and many friends and colleagues.) I got people mithering me all the time about it, like it was my duty to have a baby! Hmm

I was about a year behind DH, but suddenly got a wave of broodiness and we went on to have our 2 DC. DH was punching the air with delight when I said I was pregnant. He was like 'yes, my balls work! 😆His mum and gran kept banging on about how much they look like their dad/my DH. They didn't look much like him, they looked like me. (The family of a baby's father always say this! 'oooooh, doesn't he/she look the his/her dad?!')

Seeing the way some women are treated in certain countries, makes me glad I am UK born and raised. This is why I get extremely pissed off when people come on here slagging off the UK. It's always over-privileged, lefties who don't realise how bloody lucky they are to have been born here, and to live here. Funny thing is, these UK bashers will never leave! 🙄 Even though it has its flaws, I wouldn't leave the UK if you paid me,

I do wonder why Nigeria has so many births compared to other African countries though. They do have a huge population though. The 6th most populated in the world. The USA is 10 times bigger than Nigeria, yet the USA only has one third more people than Nigeria. Brazil is 10 times bigger than Nigeria too, and has about 20% LESS population than Nigeria.

As a woman, I am very glad I don't live in Nigeria. We are so blessed to live in the UK.

.

I knew the birth rate was declining in western societies but that figure sounds crazy.

It's pretty clear that western countries are in terminal decline. Some think it's by design, some think it's a side effect of capitalism. Either way, the maths don't lie. Just to keep the population in equilibrium, each couple would need to have two children. This is fast becoming out of reach for most. With women putting their careers first and having children later in life, one, or perhaps two children, is the most society can hope for.

Here in the west we have all but exhausted our economies and become jaded with consumerism. But interestingly, in places like Africa and Mauritius, thry are just now entering the eara we had back in the 80s and 90s. There, the shopping mall is a new and exciting prospect. People are having credit and mortgages and life is improving. Crucially, those economies are vastly more capable and absolute dwarf ours in terms of the sheer number of people involved. In the UK, our shopping malls have a Greggs, a Superdry, and some out of order toilets. The parking charges alone would buy you lunch. In Mauritius the shopping malls have bowling alleys, cart racing tracks, food courts that sell real food, not junk. And free parking. They are buzzing, vibrant places, ours are just jaded and worn out.

We are going to get swallowed up buy these countries, immigration will utterly change the face of Western democracies, things are about to get very difficult for us.

Their growth rate is far too high, and ours is (maybe) slightly too low. Both are concerning.

I think a lot of people don’t realise what a massive country Nigeria is population-wise, though.

This is a bit out of date but a good starting point
If anything, the situation has improved since then (ie peak population will be smaller and sooner)

I love that clip - he was brilliant!

The thread is about Nigeria. Nigeria is a country in Africa. It is not Africa

Your post makes no sense.

The population is almost 50/50 Muslim/Christian. The birth rate is higher in the Muslim population but it’s also pretty high in the Christian population, much higher than the birth rate in Europe.

Why is it concerning? I mean, obviously the increasing global population is concerning, but why should we be concerned by the relative increase in one part of the world compared with another?

Because relativity aside it still adds to the overall increasing global population?

But end-stage capitalism will dog these countries too. Probably faster.
